All we know is what she has been willing to share. She has appeared to be bitter and angry in some interviews and over some issues in her work, and most often, she seemed justified. She has also appeared to be soft and mellow, wise and vulnerable, weak and strong, in many of her songs. What she is like in her everyday personal life is known only to her and those close to her. I prefer to respect her privacy and refrain from speculating about the "real" Joni. Although I must admit I couldn't put down Girls like us, shame on me! While i've found Joni CAN come across as offputtingly self-absorbed and yes at times arrogant, these traits tend to come out most strongly when she's on the defensive, in an interview situation she finds antagonistic or superficial. In relaxed settings (I'm talking public appearances, interviews here, as obviously very few people know what she's like in private), her sense of humour and her warmth are very striking. However, she seems to me, from reading about her, to be basically a very temperamental, angry, bitter, demanding, hard, arrogant, difficult person... I'm sure she has a softer side under neathe, and that side can be glimpsed in her songs, but that side of her seems to be overshadowed by her tough, difficult side... I hope that she becomes softer as she gets older... Yo, I remember the poet William Blake saying something like people go from Innocence to Experience to a Higher Innocence. Joni seems to be and have been in "Experience" for a long time. So, my guess is she will enter a Higher Innocence in the nearing future, and her lyrics will once again bring out happiness in beautiful metaphors in an even higher way than when she started out. None of us here know Joni on a personal level. As a public figure, we only see what we are exposed to or what she herself chooses to present. We also tend to take something from her music and relate it to her in certain cases. With such limited access to Joni, you can only honestly make assumptions based upon your own personal interpretation of what you see and hear. From my eyes, I don't think Joni is just an angry, difficult, bitter person and such. I think there are certain topics that she is angry about--the environment, the record industry, etc etc. Just like any other human being, there are things that frustrate the hell out of her. Plus, if an interviewer asks Joni about one of these topics, she'll reply in that nature. To me, she seems like a very passionate person who has to express herself, especially when it comes to certain heated topics. And I certainly don't think Joni is just bitter. To be truly bitter (all around and what not), you can't have any sort of hope. That is what I think bitterness is--a void of hope. Just from Shine, you can tell Joni hasn't lost all hope. That right there, in my honest opinion, proves she she isn't simply bitter. Not to mention she still has her sense of humor in tact and seems truly happy with certain things in her life (just like anybody else). Although from my eyes, she seems to be spiritually, emotionally, and creatively restless--always seeking something more. That is just my opinion but I can understand and relate to that aspect of her personality. - -Monika - --- On Sat, 9/27/08, Marion Leffler wrote: Does any of us really know what Joni is like? This is probably when I enjoy writing the most...aware and not quite aware of reality, with my unconscious wide open...much more accessible than after being up and about for several hours. My telephone sits on my computer desk... this morning someone called me early. I seem to go on automatic pilot and check my e-mail...and look for the most recent JMDL. And I just finished reading it. Terra, I second your emotion...your thoughts, reactions, and on and on...although I feel that we've created, by our very nature of being blessed with an intense connection to Joni, a very safe place where expressing all opinions is cool...know what I mean? Before I read the Digest, I learned that Paul Newman died yesterday. How very sad, to know that we'll never again view the fruit of this man's genius. OMG, I'm hoping he didn't suffer. The raw grief his wife, children and family must be experiencing now. Sorry about my disjointed thinking...it's just that my mind flips from thought to thought. I completely agree with words of Terra's post that is in response to "anon, anon" ...yet I feel proud to be one person, part of a family who agrees to disagree...can speak (write their mind, hopefully without editing, and feel safe in doing so. Okay...now it's many hours since I began writing this post...I need to sleep but I can't seem to sink in to that enormous pleasure of complete rest and a needed break from reality. I do have some thoughts about Joni and the creative, genius tapestry of her complex personality. Joni, like many other gifted, enormously talented individuals, probably can be difficult, perfectionist at times. She may feel arrogant and share that feeling in her life, although I've never heard a word of arrogance within her lyrics. The part that I want to emphasize is that with genius comes many personality traits that we may all express from time to time, but Joni is an exception. I would guess that being so multiply talented and choosing to share her gifts with the world can cause her a lot of inner-conflict. Joni writes her lyrics from her soul and composes and plays her music from her heart. She allows us, by sharing such personal intimacies, to relate to our own life's experiences to our interpretation of what we guess (or know) to be the amazing life that Joni negotiates. Her raw honesty is so refreshing. Her warnings to her audience are never harsh, but contains some humor and suggestions, perhaps in how we can solve, resolve some of the issues we face in our lives. For this, I am, and always will be eternally grateful. I'd imagine that there is so much creativity and such rich thinking, philosophy and wisdom that Joni can feel as though she needs some down time. She possesse the amazing gift of being able to express herself through multiple, enormously creative avenues. To imagine that she has now been the primary director of her ballet is, for me, mind boggling. Unlike many people, gifted with extraordinary expressed creativity before her, she is a true legend in present day...not after her death. Personally, I feel Joni's gentleness, her strength, her understanding, her philosophy that she has shared with us to far outweigh any aspect of her personality that, as Terra pointed out, is usually integrated into the personality of such creative and gifted human beings. I feel that Joni, in my life, has been a savior, a catalyst and an unyielding comfort. Switching gears to last night's debates. Jon Milton wrote, in "Paradise Lost": "Yet from those flames No light, but rather darkness visible." That's how I felt about McCain. "A miracle is not the suspension of natural law, but the operation of a higher law." After the debate, and throughout the months and weeks prior to the election, this is how I feel about Senator Obama. "If any man was wronged by another and he neither rebukes, nor hates, nor bears a grudge against him, but forgives him with his whole heart, this is a saintly virtue." -Code of Jewish Law This is how I feel about Senator Obama, not only after this first debate, but throughout his campaign. This may sound raw and cold... From Shakespeare's "King Lear": "Nothing can come of nothing". This is how I feel about Senator McCain. I listened, intently to Senator McCain's answers, watched his facial expressions and thought that old adage: 'You're only as good as your last...action, behavior'. I put in 'action' and 'behavior'. Without too much posted response to Senator McCain's comments throughout the debate, I heard and saw him as resting on very old laurels, patronizing, name and place dropping. The words that came to mind after the listening to Senator Obama, throughout the debate, is, visionary, realistic, practical, living his values. I also was thrilled to hear Senator Obama's words as he approached his wife, "How did WE do"?
