She's promised to come back with a lengthier narrative but wants to give it some time. So stay tuned, more is on the way - and hopefully some pictures too! Back in the 70's when Mingus came out the phrase 'rap music' was unknown (which is not to say that the form didn't exist...exhibit A, Gil-Scott Heron but I digress). Back in the day, "rap" merely meant talk. Coffeehouses and would-be hip locales held 'rap sessions' for folks to get together and discuss/debate topics. Since the non-musical tracks on Mingus are more spoken word than anything else, they were referred to as raps. Another ancient one chimes in here to say, that's what "rap" means to us fogies. There was this incredibly STUPID song back then called "The Rapper" about a sleazeball who picks up chicks with bad lines. Now I'm going to go all Patti Parlette on your ass and include the lyrics below because, like everything, you can find it on the internet! And now I'm going to have to wash out my eyes and ears and mouth with soap to get the nasty sight, sound and taste of that one out o' my head. "The Rapper" (As recorded by Jaggerz) DON IRIS Hey girl I'll bet you There's someone out to get you You'll find him anywhere; on a bus, in a bar, in a grocery store He'll say "Excuse me, haven't I seen you somewhere before?" Rap-a-rap-a-rap They call him the rapper Rap, rap, rap you know what he's after. So he starts his rappin' Hopin' something will happen He'll say he needs you, a companion, a girl he can talk to He's made up his mind, he needs someone to sock it to. Rap-a-rap-a-rap They call him the rapper Rap, rap, rap you know what he's after. He's made an impression So he makes a suggestion "Come up to my place for some coffee, or tea, or me." He's got you where he wants you Girl you better face reality. Rap-a-rap-a-rap They call him the rapper Rap, rap, rap you know what he's after. Rap-a-rap-a-rap They call him the rapper Rap, rap, rap you know what he's after. - --- On Thu, 9/25/08, Bob.Muller@Fluor.com wrote: > From: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com > Subject: Re: Now: Happy Birthday 1975 > To: "Mark Angelo" > Cc: do9eatdo9@yahoo.com, joni@smoe.org > Received: Thursday, September 25, 2008, 8:23 AM > designation > as there is nothing rap at all about the song.> > > Since I had a birthday this week I'll show my age.
