As I have posted before, Google search indexes are not nature's law. It ist totally unnecessary to have a mailing list archive like this displayed on a web site. It is not automatic - it is deliberate. A mailing list as such is just that, a pile of mails. To make it searchable by Google, you have to want to. I have always opposed this and actually it kind of makes me mad because it does keep me from writing just the tiniest bit of personal information that I would not give any person on this planet anyway. As there are moments where I would like to comment something in a more personal manner, I only have the choice to either send it by private mail only (and taking it out of the general discussion) or not write anything at all, which is what happens most of the time. It would be easy - technically - to prevent Google to index that web site with all those mails stored! But as I have raised this topic at least twice before (hey, you can google it;) and I came up as about the only person sort of complaining about all this, I guess things won't change. What I ask myself is why hundreds of people here on this list do not care about their privacy. Maybe someone can enlighten me on this. moni k. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Aug 2008 09:09:46 +0200 From: "Henning Olsen" Subject: Joni fest UK 2008 Hi! Almost everything has been said and my incomplete language can't add much, but anyway I have to express how wonderful, yes perfect the fest was. Holycombe: every little detail was made with thought and love and the atmosphere and the indoor/outdoor "rooms" were fantastic. Lots of sun. The food and wine: lots of food at any time, fruit and snacks. Good wine and cold beer. Lucy and John managed the supplies extremely well. The group: from the start it was almost like being at home though I only had the pleasure to meet a few that I have seen before. Bob, the natural center with his inside stories and humour and everybody who were at Joni-fest 2002 and now a natural part of the "Joni-experience". It gave room for lots of new fantastic friends and musicians. The highlights have already been mentioned so I just want to say that it was some days I will always remember and I went home so inspired by the music and sharing. It was a parallel universe with joy and harmony. These Joni fests have another important effect: Christina and I haven't performed live since Jonifest 2002, because there is no market for Joni-music in Denmark, but we have just finished our 3. CD "Treasures of Joni Mitchell", with 11 unreleased songs, that Bob gave us and now again we discovered even more unreleased songs. THANK YOU. I went for a little holyday with absolute no "ambitions" and "no expectations" and had a perfect Joni fest thanks to everybody who made a special effort to make this happen (not to forget anyone). Glad you had some memorable experiences. I love Vancouver although the weather sucks sometimes. Not enough sunshine for a Sydney boy. It was a very long time ago when I went there - 1982 I think. I too felt proud to have bought a Joni album in her homeland. It was Song To a Seagull. It was the only album not available in Australia at the time. I trekked around North America for months with this record in my backpack. It was so impractical. To my surprise, it was in good condition when I finally got back home. I was so proud to show people the "Made in Canada" writing on the back. For me, I felt right at home in Vancouver. Right away, it reminded me of a little version of Sydney. The harbour, the bridge, Stanley Park was a zoo then and we also have one on the north side of the harbour. Gas Town reminded me of the Rocks area of Sydney. The people were so friendly after being in Los Angeles and I felt like I was home. I stayed at a beautiful youth hostel out in Jericho Beach, not far from UBC. It was right on the river and I used to sit out on the pier at night. I never got to Vancouver Island but I did go up the mountains for a while. To Whistler where I had a whole new set of experiences. O, Canada, I love you. Maybe one day I'll get to Ohio and even a Jonifest. I feel most of it is inadequate, and there are millions of things I have forgotten or can4t put words to. I only post to say thanks to everyone and because I know that there are people on this strangely human list who are keen to know what went on during a weekend they could not participate in. I arrived on Friday, so there are performances I missed.... A On my floor there were secret exercises going on in the early evenings. I would take a shower at that time and exploit the occasion to sing a few tunes to myself, thinking there was noone around. But each night I noticed guitar practizing going on next door, and it turned out to be Licia, who deserves a prize for picking up the guitar for the first time in twenty years and singing Joan Baez songs for us. She should share it with Adriano who also plucked the courage to sing for the first time (and for filming all the performances). I once swore that for the next Jonifest I will write a song and sing it for you all, and, well, at the time I did not know about the UK Jonifest, so that vow was about the next US one. Anyway they inspired me to keep my vow! Anita seems so involved, in everything she does, and in her life in general; she is joniesque in the way she transforms it all into music, and the music is so involved and soulful. B Barry and Delene popped up in all sorts of constellations, Delene has a warm and wide-ranging alto that will sing anything from jazz standards (I think these are the ones she was born to perform) to folk traditionals and Barry seems to play any instrument including vocal with a passion. They write their own songs and there doesn't seem to be an end to what they are capable of. What stunned me the most was perhaps a tune that fell a little outside their repertoire, namely Scarborough Fair. Clean and strong. When someone says "he is my rock", I think of someone with the looks and the character of Bob Muller. And he rocks too. So, Bob the Rock Muller: I don't need to tell you that he was all over the place with great singing and percussion, and great spirit. C Chris as everyone knows is a skilled bassplayer and one of the people who would back up any performance and also meticulously controlled sound and recording. But he sang too, with a nice swing. I guess one of the magic things about a Jonifest is that you discover new things about people through the music that they perform. Christina sang JUST like an angel, with a voice that reaches Joni-like pitches and also has the emotional depth. Her duo with Jeff on Rain and Rust was a match made in heaven, and so was their version of the pirate of penance. I want a CD with the two of them. D Dave Blackburn was another skilled, gifted, natural musician who would stand in for any one at any time, also on the sound system. Ever present I think we can thank him for making many of the sets function at a high artistic level. Donna performed two songs I did not know before, but thanks to her (thanks Donna!) I made my stage debut as backing vocal, next to Jeff. We were the Lost Earring Band! She sang in a deep and slowly vibrating voice, very powerful and involved. G Garrett and I were among the few to insist that we cannot actually perform, but at least one of us was not being truthful. Sunday morning at 2.30 Garret revealed the most handsome voice and beautiful singing of an Irish tune. Oddmunds suggestion of him singing the Magdalene Laundries is ingenious. Girls and boys would melt away... When we reminded him that he had told us he could not sing, he defended himself with "but you see: I can't remember the words!!". Yeah, I see. H To me, the mixture of hearing other people's performances and being able to sing along was great, and the Beatles-singing initiated by Henning on Saturday afternoon was a privilege to participate in. A privilege in the sense that I have never sung in a group with so many skilled musicians, they joined in with their harmonies and well-trained voices and perfect pitches and it sounded great, and I am thankful for having been a part of it. It is as if you were invited into some special club for the privileged, and you aren't really entitled to a membership. I had to leave the room at some point; listening from the outside I could not believe the quality of the singing. I listened to some of it on tape, and honestly, I felt I was listening to a Beatles recording, probably because Henning keeps his versions very closely to the original. His previous band, Rubber Band, were well known in Denmark for their Beatles covers, so when he strikes a Beatles chord, he knows what he is doing. His arrangements of Jonisongs are known to most of you; his performances with Christian lived up to the standard. J I am not sure any of us managed to define the magic of Jeff's performance, he himself seemed to want to deny that there was anything special about it. I think it is the plainness and the simplicity with which he delivers beautifully written songs. He brought tears to many people's eyes. L The fit and handsome Lesbelly Ross brought everyone to a stunned silence with his quietly intense performances of You Were not to Blame and Yvette in English. Laurent played on several occasions, subtle but intense sets, to match his personality. He also introduced us (me for the second time I think!) to the World's second-best song writer but I forgot who that was. Lucy and John made the whole ting happen miraculously. Meals were served at all hours and in-between hours, and we never really figured out where they came from and where all the dirty dishes went afterwards; I think many of us tried to lend a helping hand, but where to put that hand? John apparently was the answer to the riddle (no, not the one about where to put my hand...), but I still don't quite understand how one man could prepare four or five meals a day for twentysome persons. Clearly, Lucy ran things like a general but was never in a panic and always jolly and upbeat. On Saturday night the chief of logistics sat down and sang for us in a sweet, warm and clear voice. Humans are versatile. O Oddmund gave drama(queena)tic and fun and rather egocentric renditions of two Jonisongs which he spoke, acted and sang in equal proportion. His handgesturing accompanying the line "when I forget about ME" made everyone laugh. P I can no longer remember what Patrick leader sang, I mostly remember the passionate smile on his face, and that it was fun and communicative, just like Patrick himself, and that he has a nice voice. R Robin is a very professional artist, but what struck me most was the naturalness about her performance. I guess this goes for many of the performers, but with her seems like essential thing is something that couldn't be learned and couldn't be lost either. I couldn4t describe the thrill of hearing her sing in an adequate way so I won't. X I was never bored for one moment, and it has to be said that there were performances at all levels, maybe that is why, that and because we would often sing along, so the whole thing was interactive, and everyone actually WANTED to hear everyone sing. How strange to have twenty-odd persons ask me with genuine anticipation if I was going to perform, despite me having explained that I am not a musician. Not once did I have the feeling of being asked out of politeness and the person thinking "oh well if she claims she can't sing then she better not, she might embarrass herself, and we have too many people on the programme as it is". Maybe its because everyone loves music and so everyone is interested in hearing the music in the others. I don4t know. In fact, the level of genuiness on the personal level was high. Sunday night ended in a big jam of party music, "Without Love where would you be now" being the tune that rocked most awesomely. Everyone just came together to produce this funky strong sound, some danced, some played percussion. Some of us took the whole thing in lying on the floor. In between, when we weren't eating or listening to performances, there were moments when everyone would quietly mind their own business, some of us went for walks in the area and ended up in the sunshine outside the local pub where tohers had already gathered or stopped by. What a great village is Whichford, you walk past the pub and there's a group of Joniphiles, and you join them and the next thing happens is another couple of friends pass by. Around the house, both inside and outside, there would be quiet chatting and laughing, serious talks, and at any time, someone playing a tune on the guitar with two or three people joining in on the singing. I would also like to mentions the people who did not perform, Lieve and Mike and Steph who were jsut around and were kind and humorous and engaged. Enough for now though. Take care everyone.... If someone then tried to sell it on Ebay as a "rare Joni Mitchell book", you'd have some problems. They kept us fed morning til night every day with rich sumptuous fair such as lasagne, lamb dishes, great breads....AND PIMM'S! My first time to experience this refreshing drink. I bought some at Heathrowe to share with my friends at home who may never get to try it otherwise. Holycombe was a beautiful house in the heart of the Cotswolds (countryside) and lush and green and very cool temperature-wise. The music was awe-inspiring, heart breaking, tear jerking and laughter making. One of the highlights for me was Bob Muller's set where he rocked the house with "Love the One You're With". Another highlight was meeting new friends and seeing old friends again, this is always one of the most special parts of Jonifests for me - friends. Well I didn't think I could add much and here I am gushing on and on. This was one of the best Jonifests ever and hats off to Lucy and John for all of their hard work and planning. It really paid off and I hope they will consider hosting one again at some point as they did a wonderful job!! Donna >>> "Oddmund Kaarevik" 8/26/2008 3:40 AM >>> Dear all listers ! Just came home to Norway last night after attending my first Joni Fest ever. What an extraordinary event this was. God Bless the Queen - Lucy, for putting it all together. I think what struck me as most extraordinary was the great atmosphere. People coming together because of their love of music, both as musicians and listeners. Well, how can it be anything but successful? I remember Christina and Hennings haunting version of "Journey of the Magi " It really got me in this "Nightmare before Christmas mood" OR what about Christina and Jeff's great version of unreleased Joni song "Pirate of Penance " something. Or what about Robin and Dave's heartbreaking version of "River" that almost brouught me to tears. Or Lucas to the heart version of "The rose" it was just so beautiful. I also fully enjoyed Mr.Muller and rocking lady 1 Anita's version of "Raised on a Robbery" -- Chris I'm sorry for going crazy on the tambourine, but such great and catchy music really leads me to wanna wreck my stockings in some jukebox dive.... I remember Our Dear Queen Lucy's version of "Crazy Man Michael" Sandy Denny revisited, indeed. Or what about Les Ross coming in the first night, just when we all thought the music was over, and doing two fabolous songs bringing me to tears and convincing me to listening more to male vocalists. His versions of "Amelia" and "The Magdelene Laundries" were just superb. And so much great music for hours and hours again. Dave Blackburn is a great found in the guitar, that man seems to be able to do anything on the guitar. And Barry, get that falsetto voice out there, it rocks !!! And lastly I remember Garret's beautiful voice singing a traditional irish song in the song circle last night. And I hope next time he will step out on the stage. What a treat it would be to hear the Magdalene laundries in that voice ! Else Wonderful food ! Great conversations Comfort and consultations 17 bottles of fine Rhine Wine And Donna from Texas on her first UK trip singing one of my favorite Tracy Chapman songs, how could I possibly sit still.... What a great thing this has been ! I feel so delighted being a part of it all. And to all who as ever considered to go to a Joni fest, but still hasn't gone, DO IT ! No regrets Coyote -- this is just pure fun love and music ! And finally Lieve I'm convinced now - Nick Hornby who in many ways brought me to Joni's rich music, would have enjoyned it. He's one of us ! Thanks so much everybody ! You all have a place in my heart now ! Love and Bless ! Oddmund, Norway NP. I appreciate the kind words from Bobsart and Loren who attended the show and wish that more of you had been able to see it. I really think you would have loved it. At the risk of tooting our own horn, I'd like to tell you all a little more about the show. As described Strathmore is a magnificent concert hall and all 2,000 seats were sold- a remarkable achievement for a show featuring acts largely unknown outside of the DC area. Which is not to say we didnt have some starpower-among the 53 performers who participated are several who have pretty impressive credentials- Jon Carroll has been Mary Chapin Carpenters pianist and backing vocalist for many years and was also a Grammy winner for his work in Starland Vocal Band. Singer/multi instrumentalist John Jennings produced many of Mary Chapin Carpenters Grammy winning albums and is himself (like Jon Carroll) ?an accomplished singer songwriter with several excellent records out under his own name. Steuart Smith? plays guitar with the Eagles, has produced, toured and recorded with Shawn Colvin, Roseanne Cash, Rodney Crowell ?and countless others AND appears on Jonis incredible Turbulent Indigo album. Keith Grimes was Eva Cassidy's guitarist througout her too brief musical life and appears on most of her records. We were truly fortunate to have these musicians participate and help arrange songs. Steuart Smiths ?original arrangements of Amelia, Both Sides Now and Carey were all?truly?beautiful and I think the overall consistency of the performances was the best we have achieved. The show was the 6th such effort Bandhouse Gigs has organized- each featuring a huge and eclectic cast of DC based performers partnered in interesting and unusal groupings for the express purpose of this annual ?event which pays tribute to an esteemed artist while also showcasing great DC talent. We are very proud of the great feeling of camraderie in the hall shared by performers and audience alike- in short-each show has had a great vibe surrounding it. As expected Jonis music was far richer and more complex than any of the previous honorees we have tackled- great though they all are. Previous shows honored The Band, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Nick Lowe and initially D.C.'s Nils Lofgren whose 2004 tribute show got us started. Musicians who already loved her music came away with ane even deeper appreciation for its beauty, and sophistication. A few of the younger performers didnt know too much about her other than what they gleaned from their parents records- but they too came away full of respect for Joni and her legacy. It was?a daunting task but I am proud to say I think we did her great music proud. As?alluded to ?by bobsart in an earlier post,? we wanted to do much more than just present a parade of folksingers and bands and we included fully fleshed out arrangements of songs like Car on A Hill, Down To You, Coyote,?Woodstock, ?Ladies of the Canyon (Annie Lennox version) The Magdalene Laundries and?27?more. A?four ?woman backing vocal group we dubbed the Reckless Daughters handled the complex backing vocals beautifullyand were a huge hit. As mentioned one of our artists, Grace Griffith is battling Parkinsons yet performed wonderfully througout the show including as a member of the Reckless Daughters. We had 2 amazing singers who just turned 17, ?Margot Macdonald and Chelsea Lee as well as some of the most popular veterans of the DC scene- Mary Ann Redmond, Naked Blue, Heidi Martin, and LEA were just a few of the artists who performed. The show is put together over the course of 2 long rehearsals held a few days before the show at a mass gathering resembling a party more than a band practice- its a lot of fun and somehow we manage to get the work done. Bandhouse Gigs is a not for profit entity whose goal is to have a great time playing the music of an amazing songwriter with an ever expanding group of friends- kind of like Joni Fest I suppose. We had the show recorded and filmed and if anyone is interested will keep you posted on any news about that. It was a thrill and an honor to have the chance to present a 3 hour show honoring Joni Mitchell who in my opinion has virtually no peers in popular music.
