I really had a good listen to the lyrics of Jericho today and I realised that it's about friendship. Beautiful song. Now, I understand what Joni is trying to say but the Jericho eludes me. As a born and raised Atheist, I don't get Bible references but, I know it is something from the Bible (I've heard the term before). Is that a city? Maybe someone can explain the term, Jericho to me and why Joni used it as an analogy to friendship. Mark in Sydney ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 8 Aug 2008 12:08:59 +0200 From: "Marion Leffler" Subject: SV: Jericho Hi Mark, Jericho is a city mentioned in the Old Testament (Book of Joshua). Joshua was Moses' successor and continued leading the Israelites to the Promised land. When they reached Jericho, Joshua was told (by God, of course) to besiege the city for six days and on the seventh day to blow the horns. The walls of Jericho would then tumble down and the Israelites could go in and kill everybody in the town and take the city for themselves. And so they did. Only a prostitute and her family were saved as she was promised in return of her spying for the Israelites. Cruel, isn't it? The Old Testament is full of stories like that. Now, as for Joni using the reference, I think it's because "the walls of Jericho" are a symbol for a strong defence that can only be broken by an act of God (the horns). I think she is referring to her defences against commitment rather than friendship. I feel the song is about the beginning of a new relationship and Joni is promising to herself and her new lover to not keep up her defences, to let him get close to her and to commit herself to the relationship. Were the Israelites invading the city or trying to get it back? Was the city taken from them in the first place? Nice to know they had a soft spot for a prostitute. I have a story about my BSN shirt too. I bought mine at Joni's BSN concert in Concord in 2000, was it? Very treasured souvenir of a very special night. Anyway, when our cat Oscar was still pretty new with us and not fully grown, he got stuck on a neighbor's roof one evening. I went to rescue him. I happened to be wearing my BSN shirt at the time. Bad move. Should have put something else on instead. I got Oscar off the roof but on the way back to our house, a noise startled him and he freaked. I was afraid he'd take off and I'd have a heck of a time catching him so I held on to him for dear life. The result was that he shredded the front of the shirt, not to mention the claw marks he left all over my chest and stomach. I was devastated and ready to kill the cat but I managed to control that particular urge. It's not like he knew what he was doing or did it on purpose, after all. I later got a replacement on e-bay. Not quite the same but I love Joni's clever front and back painting so I'm happy I at least have one that is intact. I don't wear it much these days, though. It hangs in the closet next to the 'Turbulent Indigo' and 'Taming the Tiger' shirts I bought at the Gorge in '98. I can't remember where but it said that Joni "makes honest music." Well, what constitutes as honesty in music? What makes her music "honest?" As a result, what would you say is Joni's most "honest" song by your definition? - -Monika, excited to be going to Vancouver on the 19th! ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V2008 #133 ********************************* ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:onlyjoni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe
