But just in case it's not, there was a Joni mention. Cybil was home alone and bored, so she ordered some food from a restaurant and invited the waiter to stay with her and watch a video, which he did. Then he broke down and told her his exboyfriend was having a party in their former apartment but that he himself would just go home now and "play all my Joni Mitchell records". (Cybil advised him not to but to crash the party instead. I don't know - I would have preferred to straighten myself up with Joni's music to having "all the people at this party" test my confidence). I fell off the couch laughing when they first aired that one. I just don't know with all the crap on television why we don't see them over here. A couple of side notes, Cybil marched on both big Marches on Washington for Gay rights, once with her daughter, so she walks the walk. And many years ago I knew her costar Christine Baranski as she is from my hometown and we did a stage play together. She is a terrific actress and a wonderful person. Love, Laura - - Laura Stanley ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 5 Aug 2008 16:49:11 +0000 From: Patti Parlette Subject: sjc, Joni moment in "Swing Vote", and my talking as it rambled.... Bonjour, Baybees! I am on a lonely road and I am traveling, traveling, traveling....with no computer. I've missed you all! But now I am in front of my Circle Game son's PC for just a few moments. I'm in Obamaland, Land of the Tolls....hi Paz....I'm remembering that when I logged onto this same computer two years ago I learned the sad news about Jack, so I am sending up prayers for him and his friends and kin just at this very moment of the world. And you know, there may be more prayers: for Mags's brother, and Catherine's mother, and all our mothers and fathers and that poor boy in Canada and all our loved ones who have passed before us. Amen. I'm stealing just a few minutes here to tell you about the movie "Swing Vote". My son and daughter-in-law thought it might be a good one for me (amazing how considerate and thoughtful kids become after they hit their twenties -- it's the best karma in the world -- he's cooking for me and picking out things he thinks * I * would like to do! Beautiful!) I told them I really wanted to see "Gonzo: The Life and Times of Hunter S. Thompson" and/or "CSNY/Deja Vu", but they didn't seem to be playing around here (or so they said...LOL!), so we settled on "Swing Vote". (I really wanted to go to the Peace Museum downtown, but their website is old and apparently inactive, and the number listed there, when I called, said "out of service." Phooey!) Chris asked if I would be okay eating popcorn in a "regular theater" as opposed to those "artsy-fartsy art houses you usually go to, where they eat tofu and hummus." Freshie! ; ) SPOILER ALERT: If you plan to see the movie and you like surprises, you should stop reading now. (Don't say I didn't warn ya!) I won't tell you the whole plot -- you can read about it elsewhere -- but here is what jolted me. I had been whispering to Chris: "That's Marshall Tucker Band, from 1972", things like that, when all of sudden, I heard CSNY! Imaginez-vous! "One morning, I woke up....." Carry On. I couldn't contain myself, and gasped: "Crosby Stills Nash and Young! Oh my God! Chris, it's Crosby Stills Nash and Young!" Chris, appalled, looked down at me and scolded: "SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHSH! Shhhsh! MOM, you're too loud!" (Oops! Sorry, hon!) Me: "But listen! (TIC! Strains of Benny Goodman....) It's CSNY!" And then it gets worse (or better). All of a sudden, what to my wondering eyes should appear but the cover of BLUE! Joni's face on the movie screen! (Well, wouldn't YOU sit bolt upright, too? You'd cry out, too, if it happened to you!) "JONI!!!! Look! It's a Joni Mitchell album! Look!" (I'm pointing to the screen like a three-year old.) Chris: "MOM!!!!!!!!!!! Shhhhhhhsh!" (A thunderhead of judgement was gathering in his gaze. You can't take her anywhere!) (LOL....after all the times he embarrassed me being rowdy and uncontrollable and childlike in the Circle Game years, I guess this is payback. Now I am returning to myself, the things that I supressed in HIM!) Me: "But look! It's JONI!!!" Chris: "Okay, okay. Settle DOWN, Mom!" Seeing BLUE up on the screen really threw me off the story-line for a bit. "Looking back on everything", it was really one of the saddest scenes in the film. Heartbreaking, really. Afterward, while we were discussing the movie, Chris the Joni-jokester had to mention that it was fitting to have Joni in that part of the film, because it was about a whacked out woman who had gone totally over the edge due to (I think) drugs. So now in retrospect, maybe it's not a good thing that Joni was featured so prominently in that scene. I don't know. I really don't know. Just wanted to mention it before I hit the refuge of the roads again. Love and good vibrations to all, Patti P. P.S. More on "Swing Vote", from Huffington Post: "I watched Costner film his big speech that night. And it was powerful. But not nearly as powerful as it is now, in the context of the current state of the race. So go see Swing Vote. Bring your cynicism, you (sic) idealism, and a box of Kleenex." Cynical and drunk, was Kevin Costner's character Bud, until he came to his senses, thanks to his daughter Molly. I was crying and saying: "GO MOLLY!" at the end of the movie (to more: "Mom -- shshhhsh!"'s") from my sweet son. I tried to paste the link but this hillbilly PC (Hi BM!) won't let me do it, so you'll have to go to huffingtonpost.com yourself if you are interested in her take on it. It's called Swing Vote: What It Tells Us About the '08 Race, and Why Obama Needs to Put Kevin Costner on His iPod (Oh, so the link is there after all?) P.P.S. I only had a chance but to skim my emails, and can't delve into Facebook, but thanks for the invite, RF -- rock the vote, man! There's a round resounding for you, way up here. Can you believe those McCain ads? Arghhhh! If Obama can bear to hear the words he's spoken, twisted and misconstrued by some smug fool...... Carry on, indeed. We've got to spread his light like blazes, all across the sky! P.P.P.S. Catherine, ma chere, how was Veronique? Dites-nous! Victor, great report on those rock and roll choir boys, CSN. They always take you to holy ground, don't they? I will see C & N on some October Road. Kakki, hope you are feeling those gentle trade winds soothe your work-ravaged soul and that they renew you again and again. Kate, I wish I could come to your Neil tribute! NEIL!!!! Will there be a dvd of it? I want it. I want it! A woman must have everything! And Barbara, thanks for telling us how to get -- how to get -- to Sesame Street! Felicitations! Okay, I'm really signing off for now (Hi David Sapp!). I have time on my hands, and want to spend it with the child I raised! ; ) xo, pp Freedumb Countdown: 167 days, 11 hours _________________________________________________________________ Got Game? I saw Veronique Sanson live in Montreal at la Place des arts last Saturday. The venue was wonderful and intimate and I was sitting about 12 rows back. She had a wonderful rockin' band with her and looked very chic and smaller than I would have imagined. She really connects with her audience and whenever the audience would clap and cheer at the end of a song, she would clap back at us and the house lights would come up and she would look out at the audience. And she chats up a storm, telling stories about her songs and tells a lot of jokes. I am so glad I had the chance to see her. (Thanks for asking!) - --- On Tue, 8/5/08, Patti Parlette wrote: P.P.P.S.
