You know how much I would love to go to Australia! Unfortunately I haven't a) saved enough money yet and b) plucked up the courage for that loooong flight. But one day I will, and when I do I know who to ask for guidance! I'll make sure not to confuse summer with winter, though:-) My vacations in Germany are a reoccurring thing since I still have family there. They still live in the town I grew up in, a small town in the Harz mountains (I know you are good at maps so you will probably find the region). The town has visible medieval roots and lovely surroundings so I took lots of healthy walks and also went swimming in the forest lakes. No computer and no Joni except for MOA and of course Hejira. I still have one more week off work so I'll be able to recover from my Joni abstinence, no worries:-) Have a lovely weekend, everybody, Marion ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Jul 2008 08:19:40 -0400 From: srobe444@aol.com Subject: Confessional Songwriter? I think she misunderstood the term, which in poetry is usually applied (I think I have this right) to someone who writes in the first person about experiences they directly had. It is not confession in the Catholic sense of admitting guilt and seeking forgiveness, and I think that may be what Joni reacted to. Still, Sharon Olds, who most would consider a confessional poet, says she only wrote about three confessional poems in her life, and she makes a point ofdistinguishing someone like Robert Lowell, who used actual letters from people in his poetry, from someone who filtered experience with art, so that the poet is always different from the narrator or speaker in the poem. So that may also ne what Joni reacted to. Or it may be something entirely different. (well it was in my drafts folder -- maybe I never sent it)) Seeing it now, it looks a little like a poem,,,) I recall a much earlier post where I remarked there is a very, very good album hiding in these tracks. Songwriting is superb, production unfortunate. A remix would be interesting...picture real drums, for example. Last night I went to an evening of Kirtan singing in Atlanta. I was invited by a girl I've been dating now for a couple of weeks, April ( who I met at the 4th of July camping/music festival I attend.) For those not familiar with this, it is singing spiritual chants in Sanskrit in a call and response manner with drums and other instruments. I had known I was going to this for about a week but it didn't occur to me till yesterday that I knew Ashara does this sort of thing and had mentioned it at past Jonifest gatherings. Anyway, it was very cool and something I'm glad I've had a chance to experience. It really does feel like coming around in a circle as it seems so long since I've been to a N.E. jonifest and I of course have to Ashara to thank for starting the whole thing but in any case, I definitely thought of you Ashara and this is just another way in which our lives are intertwined through music and spirit and coming together in endless ways, almost unfathomable. The following quote is from Billboard magazine, 12/9/95, and written by Timothy White. Always made perfect sense to me: Observers and critics have occasionally called some of Joni Mitchell's song-writing "confessional." But that's not really true, because to confess something, one has to hesitate over the difficulties of the expression, and Joni Mitchell has never hesitated with any aspect of her music. She believes that truth and beauty are the prime challenge and ultimate destination of all meaningful art, and she has struggled mightily to ensure that her guiding spirit will not be diverted from those transcendent goals. ... signing off for now, Peace, David ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Jul 2008 11:31:16 -0700 (PDT) From: Bob Muller Subject: Joni Covers 102 - The Nonagon So I was able to finally get the link for the latest volume out there, thanks to those of you who have gone to check it out. I call this the Nonagon because as you know, a nonagon is a 9-sided figure, and this particular volume has 9 sides; that is to say it has NINE Both SIDES Now on it. Not by design, I just corral them in as they come and there were a mess of BSN's this time around. Thanks to the folks who pitched in to help with this one...Les, Ron, Mark-Leon, thanks guys! So - let's get into what is on this bad boy, shall we? If you missed the link, here it is: http://tinyurl.com/6s4yml 1. Sarah Morrau - Both Sides Now: Fargo's finest! Sarah turns in a lovely, tender, and quiet version of BSN with some equally lovely guitar behind her. 2. Luciana Souza - Down To You: I like this one a lot better than her Amelia cover, don't know if it's just better suited to her voice or style but it has the bossa nova feel that sounds great. Produced by her husband, Larry Klein. 3. Chris Neufeld - Both Sides Now: Chris' voice isn't very pretty but it's effective in its own way, even when you can feel him straining to hit the high notes, it gives the song a pained and lonely feeling. 4. Jackson - The Circle Game & Rockport Sunday: This one is a very obscure one, coming from some 70's era vinyl. I suppose Jackson thought he'd be able to make it one name like Madonna or Cher or something...and he medleys Tom Rush's song Rockport Sunday with it. His voice has a Bobby Goldsboro-ish sound to it. 5. Bob Thompson Trio - Both Sides Now: An early 70's track rescued from vinyl. This one threatens to be pretty mundane until about halfway through when Bob, the pianist, goes on a tear and plays some mean runs with his right hand while his left pounds out the melody. 6. Jennifer Scott - A Case Of You: Vancouver B.C.'s Jennifer loves Joni - this is her 3rd Joni cover, turning in nice versions of Free Man in Paris & You Dream Flat Tires on her last record. This one features some really nice bass work, and of course Jennifer's vocal as well. 7. Scott Oglesbee - Both Sides Now: Instrumental, keyboards instead of guitars this time. 8. Blue Martini Jazz - Blue Motel Room: Hailing from Toronto, Blue Martini Jazz is a collaboration between veteran singer Jeanine Mackie and renowned saxophonist Pat Perez. Lots of really nice versions of this wonderful song, this is certainly one of them, everything is right on the money. 9. Jim Carrick - Both Sides Now: Another fine acoustic guitar instrumental take on the franchise. I suppose it speaks to the strength of the song that the melody is just fine all by itself. A new recording, this one (as are many on this volume) is from 2007. Jim also throws a surprise in there towards the end with some pretty fancy picking. 10. Brigitte Bader - Goodbye Pork Pie Hat: Brigitte is a French jazz singer. This track features Johnny Griffin on piano, as well as a nice trio of jazz players. Her singing is real loose, not always a good thing, but for the most part this is a very nice track. 11. Lucas Maree - Both Sides Now: This one is pretty - nothing special though really. 12. Blowzone - Help Me: A nice jazz cover, as you might guess by their name they are primarily all about the horns, the band features a 5-part horn section. Lots of nice sounds here, I personally am a sucker for that trumpet sound and this guy is fantastic. These guys are in the Twin Cities area in Minnesota, so if you're nearby check them out. 13. John Carlini - Both Sides Now: This is an acoustic instrumental, and a darn good one at that. John's resume is pretty impressive, he has played with some of the finest...Stephane Grapelli, Tony Rice, David Grisman and is classified in that same newgrass category. Some interesting soloing to be found here as well. 14. Woodstock - Blue: The first of 2 covers from these fine musicians from Leicester, UK on this volume. Woodstock specializes in Joni, CSN, and Y songs. They don't set out to do anything radically different from the originals they just like to throw themselves into music that they love. 15. Silver Creek Mountain Band - Both Sides Now: From South Africa comes this one by the Silver Creek Mountain Band - the vocal is a bit scruffy but has a genuine folk feel to it. 16. Woodstock - Night Ride Home: You know that a band is made up of Joni fans when they take their name from one of her songs! This take on NRH is much like Joni's, a little perkier and minus the cricket. 17. Denis King - Both Sides Now: This is an oldie from 1976 and sounds like it, synth and cheesy drums and all. The album was titled "Girl Power" and Denis covered all female writers on it. Hmm, no Denis envy here. Sorry again for the delay in getting my act together with this one...I suppose I'd better get started with writing up #103 so I can redeem myself. Thanks for reading, and thanks for listening! I loved the analysis of "the boho dance" in the book: "The music of Joni Mitchell"... It was a very intelligent, thoughtful interpretation of the song and the full context of Joni in regard to the song... However, King Soloman, from what I remember, was quite wise, yet he seemed to "lose his head" towards the end of his life... still, I guess Joni's point was illustrated well enough. that there is greed and selfishness as well as high minded altruism among all people, regardless of what social class the person is a member of... _________________________________________________________________ Its a talkathon but its not just talk. http://www.imtalkathon.com/?source=EML_WLH_Talkathon_JustTalk ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Jul 2008 18:08:38 EDT From: FMYFL@aol.com Subject: an actress that could play a young Joni Historically, when it comes to television, most jmdlers don't watch tv. If they do, it's the history channel, the weather channel, some sports, CNN, or a music special. Last month some jmdlers came out of the closet talking about watching sitcoms, reality shows, detective shows, etc...... We do come from all walks of life afterall. We've also discussed for at least the 10 yrs I've been on the list, what actress could play Joni if there was a movie made about her life. Well, I finally found a TV (and some movies), a young actress that has some facial features that IMO resemble Joni in her earlier years. Some of you might think I'm crazy, but Ed pointed it out last night when we were watching the recorded episode of this summer's new hit show "Swingtown". I won't go into details about the show, but I'm sure I'm not the only person on the list that has seen it. Anyway, the actress is Shanna Collins and she plays the role of Laurie Miller, the high school daughter of the new *swingers* in the neighborhood. I found one pic of her doing a google search, and even though it's not the best, it might give you an idea. If Shanna dyed her hair blonde, maybe you can imagine a young Joni. She's got the high cheek bones, a similar nose, and of course the hairstyle that most women wore in the mid 70's. Here's a link to her pick. Tell me if I'm crazy :) http://www.tvguide.com/tvshows/swingtown/photos/288112/19 Oh, and I do like the show. Cute girl...she could be a brunette Joni Mitchell. And yes, you are crazy! (jk) When it comes to T.V. I don't watch a great deal of it but do have some favorite shows: Lost, 24, Prison Break, Simpsons, and Family Guy.
