[Monika Bogdanowicz Subject: Re: Gandalf Publishing Thanks! I have to add, it shows some taste that Joni and Chuck picked "Gandalf" for their publishing name. He is, afterall, the best character from LOTR in my opinion. He's bad ass (can take command of a situation I mean) but a good guy at heart. - -Monika - --- On Wed, 7/2/08, Les Irvin wrote: Joniphiles - Astute observers of some of Joni's early, unrecorded songs will note the publishing credit goes to Gandalf Publishing. I've often wondered about that name, certainly I'm not alone. In the first Library article (of what I hope is many) penned by the man himself exclusively for the website, Chuck explains where the name came from: http://jonimitchell.com/Library/view.cfm?id=1892 Enjoy, Les ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 3 Jul 2008 14:35:54 +0000 From: c Karma Subject: re: Gandalf Publishing Seems like Chuck has made a decent creative life for himself. It won't hurt to perhaps drive some traffic to his website and shows. I don't think he exploited the association to Joni in quite the same way that many celebrities' exes do now, back in the 70s when it might have served him, and for that he gets points. (Then again, his answering machine might reply, "Hi you've reached Chuck Mitchell, Joni's ex-husband...please leave a message.") If they were tooling around in a 9 year old Porsche (in Detroit, in the 60s!!!), they liked a little bling. I did like the reference to "gin rummy, and curtains." I believe that besides the line from " I Had a King": He's taken the curtains down...I think that Joni has mentioned having made curtains for their Detroit apartment herself (along with some of her clothes) from recycled fabric. Or, maybe it was that the clothes were made from the curtains (see Carol Burnett)? I suppose by some people, ambitious could be derogatory, yes. However, I didn't intend it that way. To me, ambition is a beautiful thing. What I mean when I say Joni is ambitious is that she STRIVES for perfection on her own terms. She has always challenged herself and the listener musically by making thoughtful, compelling music. She's always been seeking something more musically (and I'd guess personally though that can't be said for sure). I mean take one album and compare it to another for example. Just by having such a diverse set of material, she proves her ambition. For us, the fans, it brings a wind of refreshment. For critics, it can leave them a little confused. What the hell is she? Is she folk? Jazz? Rock? Oh boy, you just can't find a label. So I give Joni the compliment of being ambitious as that was my intention although I do think there is such a thing as being over ambitious....ambition for ambition's sake...but not in music. Musically, it is different. - -Monika - --- On Thu, 7/3/08, Catherine McKay wrote: If forced at gunpoint to make a choice between pretentious or ambitious, I guess I'd go with ambitious, but that can be a derogatory adjective as well. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 3 Jul 2008 20:18:25 -0700 (PDT) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: Joni pretentious or ambitious? Aha! I mustn't have been paying attention in class. I thought you were quoting someone else. In that case, yes, ambitious by all means. Joni is distinctly Joni and I doubt anyone compares to her. She is definitely in a class of her own. - --- On Thu, 7/3/08, Monika Bogdanowicz wrote: I suppose by some people, ambitious could be derogatory, yes. However, I didn't intend it that way.
