Actually, Mark, we have had this discussion before but no matter, there are new members since then who did not take part in it. Like you, I would suggest Gwyneth Paltrow and I do agree with everything you say about her. Another choice, to my mind, could be Julianne Moore. She would have to dye her hair, of course:-). She also seems to be a very sensitive actress who can play any role assigned to her. Neither GP nor JM (initials alike!) could pass as teenagers any more, though, so they would be suitable for Joni's middle years. On the other hand, there is a lot you can do with cosmetics so they might be able to play all of Joni's ages. Daryl Hannah - nope, she does not strike me as a Joni person, but that's just my opinion. "Jacobs is hoping to make this for the big screen, rather than television, and I imagine that with the right script, that shouldn't be too hard -- youth mixed with music usually does well. But who could play King, Mitchell, and Simon as teens?" I don't know if she could pull off Joni in her teens, however, Gwyneth Paltrow has always fascinated my as an actress in her sensibilities in roles such as the movies "Sylvia", "Proof", and "Running With Scissors" and in my rather superficial and brief exposure to her work, she strikes me as having characteristics including obvious physical similarities to Joni and as well in her persona as a type of vulnerable and hopeful "flower child" whose struggle for meaning and artistic purity and integrity have led to not-so-glamorous roles which lacked corresponding instant cinematic popular gratification, paralleling in a way Joni's struggle to be true to her music and herself. The similarities to me (without knowing all that much about Gwyneth's life) are striking. Even their daughters, "Little Green" (Kelly Green) and "Apple" bear names that are remarkably similar when you think about their symbolism. Daryl Hannah comes to mind in a similar way... Or who knows maybe some ingenue out there just waiting to be discovered that is willing to try and "tame the tiger". It would be interesting to have some JMDL'ers discuss their potential candidates for a potential Joni casting nonetheless. Love, Laura ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Jun 2008 04:43:14 -0700 (PDT) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Mitchell's twin pursuits mirrored in Green Flag Song - Toronto Star article, Tuesday, June 10, 2008 Mitchell's twin pursuits mirrored in Green Flag Song Jun 10, 2008 04:30 AM Peter Goddard Visual Arts Columnist "I have always thought of myself as a painter derailed by circumstances." b Joni Mitchell Singing, songwriting and other musical circumstances made Joni Mitchell famous and widely influential. But art brings her back to Toronto b where she first lived 44 years ago b with "Green Flag Song," 60 large-scale triptychs filling the lobby walls at CTV (277 Queen St. W.) as part of Luminato. Mitchell isn't alone among musicians who turn to art as another expressive outlet. Leonard Cohen has drawings currently on the walls of the Drabinsky Gallery in Yorkville. Ron Wood's work has shown locally for years. Tony Bennett's drawings pop up now and then. And a painting attributed to Miles Davis, although there's some doubt about its provenance, made its way into the 2006 Whitney Biennial. The greatest musician-artist was most surely Arnold Schoenberg, the seminal early 20th century composer. When not creating the template for futuristic atonal music, Schoenberg painted with sufficient skill to earn him respect from Wassily Kandinsky and Oskar Kokoschka, among others. Mitchell is no Schoenberg. Yet her art, like his, can't be separated from the music-making surrounding it. The one mirrors the other. Just think of all the many colour references found throughout her writing, from the early album Blue to the song "Big Yellow Taxi." For her Luminato show, some of Mitchell's anti-war lyrics are included in two wall panels, making the music-art connection all the more evident (unnecessarily so, in my opinion). Indeed, "Green Flag Song" is another side of the cranky, worried vision that led to Mitchell's Shine, the album released last year on the Starbucks Hear Music label, which bristles with the distemper of the times. One of its tunes, "If I Had A Heart," seethes about "holy war, genocide, suicide." "Green Flag Song," Mitchell says, is about "war, revolution and torture." It's also about the shock she felt when she returned to her Los Angeles home after a sojourn at her country place in British Columbia and found her dysfunctional TV set creating lurid, shadowy green pictures. After photographing a number of the images, Mitchell had them enlarged and printed on canvas. Arranged vertically, not horizontally, each triptych suggests a bank of TV monitors found in a Future Shop tuned into a variety of war zones, past and present, with soldiers, bayonets and bodies strewn this way and that, barely visible through what could be a cloud of poison gas. Others are filled with ghostly faces and gauzy bodies. But the most engrossing images are those providing the least information. A better selection resulting in a few fewer pieces in the entire show might solve the problem of image overload that now overwhelms the viewer. "But they're stunning," said Andrew Vartabedian. To the 33-year-old teacher from Denver discovering Luminato for the first time yesterday, the cinematic quality of Mitchell's images reminded him "of certain experimental filmmakers, like Stan Brakhage." pgoddard@thestar.ca http://www.thestar.com/article/440169 __________________________________________________________________ Be smarter than spam. The Canadian Songbook covered songs by Joni, among others. (I wasn't there.) - ----------------------------------------------------------------------- These songs are our songs, O Canada Jun 11, 2008 04:30 AM Martin Knelman We've grown so used to the Great American Songbook it comes as a happy surprise to discover many great songs were written by artists born north of the border. Luminato scored big points Monday by creating a whole evening at Massey Hall of Canadian songs. The concept: a new generation of performers paid tribute to songwriters of our past, with enough great moments to warrant a sequel at next year's festival. Through a neat twist, a number of artists onstage were already featured in other Luminato events which made the evening a bonding ritual b one reason the packed house loved this event. And through another twist, two of the greatest living Canadian singer-songwriters in our history b Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell b happened to be making high-profile appearances in Toronto this week, even though they have lived in Los Angeles for decades. Eventually some of the thrilling talent in the lineup made the evening soar, but there were rough patches along the way. The night began on a shaky, perplexing note when Molly Johnson sang the weirdest version I've ever heard of "I'll Never Smile Again," that classic written almost 70 years ago by Ruth Lowe. Yes, it's a poignant song, but Johnson made it suicidal, and breathed the words heavily rather than singing them. Things didn't get much better when Dan Zanes paid underwhelming tribute to Ian & Sylvia with two songs, one written by each of them: "You Were On My Mind" and "Someday Soon." Karen David offered samples of Bryan Adams ("When You Love Someone"), Joni Mitchell ("Come In From the Cold") and Shirley Eikhard ("Something to Talk About.") David may be the perfect front person for Roots, but she came across as a bar singer. During the first half-hour, the band seemed so loud you couldn't make out the words even if you already knew them. This may have been caused by mic problems. Luckily Luke Doucet came along and roused us from our stupor with lively versions of Robbie Robertson's "Ophelia" and Bruce Cockburn's "Wondering Where the Lions Are." Emcees Kim Stockwood and Damhnait Doyle, who kept things moving all night with entertaining patter, took centre stage to sing Leonard Cohen's "Ain't No Cure for Love" b even while Cohen was giving the last of his four amazing Toronto concerts just blocks away at the Sony Centre. Juno-winning Alex Cuba closed the first half of the show with Gordon Lightfoot's "In the Early Morning Rain" and an exquisite Spanish version of Blue Rodeo's "Bad Timing." After intermission, pianist Marika Bournaki dazzled the crowd with "Papillon" and "O Canada." Nikki Yanofsky, that 14-year-old bundle of excess, redeemed herself with a sweet take on Mitchell's "The Circle Game" after a blast-you-out-of-your-seat "Big Yellow Taxi" that seemed more assault than tribute. Mikel Rouse, the New Yorker whose trilogy of chamber operas is running in rep all through Luminato, provided one of the high points with an unforgettably wonderful performance of Neil Young's "Harvest Moon." Danny Michel somehow found a way to make Paul Anka's "My Way" sound fresh. Ron Sexsmith provided the ultimate tribute. When he did "Song for a Winter's Night," the nuances made him sound like Lightfoot. With "Sisters of Mercy" he morphed into Cohen. And even singing Gene MacLellan's "Snowbird" I swear he sounded almost like Anne Murray. By the time Stockwood and Doyle wrapped things up on an upbeat gospel note with MacLellan's "Put Your Hand in the Hand," the crowd was high b mellow, festive and patriotic. Play it again, Luminato. mknelman@thestar.ca http://www.thestar.com/article/440850 __________________________________________________________________ Be smarter than spam. Hi Marion, Gwyneth Paltrow still seems to me the obvious choice as you note as well. Randy's suggestion of Claire Danes was one that hadn't occurred to me, but she would be way up there on the list. I was really impressed with her after seeing her in "Stage Beauty", assuming she was a natural blond, only to make a rare trip to the theatre to watch "Evening" in which she transformed into a brunette in one of the leading roles. I'm not sure whether she is a natural blond or not, I'm thinking no, but she was so convincing in Stage Beauty" she has proven she can pull off an impressive "beauty parlor blond". Her eyes it seems to me, perhaps her whole facial expression convey so much, almost a Meryl Streep quality which is no small feat. She did a stellar job in "Evening", however, even her impressive performance could not save that movie IMHO. I had such high hopes for that movie, after seeing the the author of "The Hours" was connected in some way to the movie - turns out he co-adapted (is that a word?) the book to become the screenplay whereas he wrote the book that "The Hours" was based on. Julianne Moore did such a magnificent performance in that movie, indeed in most everything I've seen her in, she certainly has the ability to portray Joni, I don't recall her as a blond in most of her work but if they could make a convincing Virginia Woolf out of Nicole Kidman with the use of a prosthetic nose, they could no doubt transform JM (yes interesting about the initials!!). Darryl Hannah I just threw out there, not because I'm familiar with her acting - I'm not - but because she has the looks - which were similar enough (and most likely some aspects of temperament) to result in a similar sort of tragic romance with Jackson Browne as did Joni. And I think of the tree-house incident in which she lived up in a tree for a period of time to protest clear cutting of trees "paved paradise" - considerably more politically active in her own way than Joni, I guess she shares that with JB as Joni is actually more of an outspoken observer to troubled times, but actually a moderate (last I read) in her own words. So my list would read: 1) Gwyneth Paltrow 2) Claire Danes 3) Julianne Moore - -- - -Mark in Florida On Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 3:47 AM, Marion Leffler wrote: > Actually, Mark, we have had this discussion before but no matter, there are > new members since then who did not take part in it.
