"Jacobs is hoping to make this for the big screen, rather than television, and I imagine that with the right script, that shouldn't be too hard -- youth mixed with music usually does well. But who could play King, Mitchell, and Simon as teens?" I don't know if she could pull off Joni in her teens, however, Gwyneth Paltrow has always fascinated my as an actress in her sensibilities in roles such as the movies "Sylvia", "Proof", and "Running With Scissors" and in my rather superficial and brief exposure to her work, she strikes me as having characteristics including obvious physical similarities to Joni and as well in her persona as a type of vulnerable and hopeful "flower child" whose struggle for meaning and artistic purity and integrity have led to not-so-glamorous roles which lacked corresponding instant cinematic popular gratification, paralleling in a way Joni's struggle to be true to her music and herself. The similarities to me (without knowing all that much about Gwyneth's life) are striking. Even their daughters, "Little Green" (Kelly Green) and "Apple" bear names that are remarkably similar when you think about their symbolism. Daryl Hannah comes to mind in a similar way... Or who knows maybe some ingenue out there just waiting to be discovered that is willing to try and "tame the tiger". It would be interesting to have some JMDL'ers discuss their potential candidates for a potential Joni casting nonetheless. The very first second I read the possibility of making this into the movie I didn't like the idea. After thinking about it, it could be done, as long as it is done well. We've had a few movies concerning musicians that were quite good. I just wouldn't want it to be all "Hollywooded up." As for Paltrow, though I think she's a good actress I wouldn't want her as Joni and here's why. There are quite a few people I know who think there is something very distant and cold about her...as if she seems to put something out there like that. That being said, I would want somebody who could bring a likeability factor, and not only to Joni but to all three women. I wouldn't want people to be put off right away because of the actress. Now I don't necessarily feel that way about Paltrow but more than one person has told me such a thing. Plus, as mentioned, she is too old to play a young Joni as is featured in the article. -Monika Mark Angelo wrote: I don't know if she could pull off Joni in her teens, however, Gwyneth Paltrow has always fascinated my as an actress in her sensibilities in roles such as the movies "Sylvia", "Proof", and "Running With Scissors" and in my rather superficial and brief exposure to her work, she strikes me as having characteristics including obvious physical similarities to Joni and as well in her persona as a type of vulnerable and hopeful "flower child" whose struggle for meaning and artistic purity and integrity have led to not-so-glamorous roles which lacked corresponding instant cinematic popular gratification, paralleling in a way Joni's struggle to be true to her music and herself. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Jun 2008 08:35:57 -0700 (PDT) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: joni in toronto I've seen the art show already and am going to the ballet on Friday (cheap seats though - I'm not a member of the jet set.) I went to the art exhibit on opening day with Rachel who's also on the list but who hasn't posted a lot lately and will also be going with her to the ballet. We were kind of hoping Joni might be there opening day, but she wasn't. She may be there on Friday, so I may go again. Word is that she will be at the ballet. - --- On Tue, 6/10/08, Watts, Lesli wrote: > From: Watts, Lesli > Subject: joni in toronto > To: joni@smoe.org > Received: Tuesday, June 10, 2008, 11:00 AM > Joni's ballet and art show are premiering in toronto > this week . catherine i bet you'll be there-- who > else is gonna take the lister party train and cheer our > girl on? hope you all have a party and send us the pics > > lesli __________________________________________________________________ Be smarter than spam. Besides Paltrow, I think Claire Danes could also play Joni. As a fan of House, I think it's a good sign that it's the exec producer of that show working on it. The other thing is, they would have to get synch licenses to use the songs (Joni's permission) and they would have to get the record companies' permission to use the recordings (or re-record them by someone else-Aimee Mann?). With three catalogs of music, it could be a legal nightmare. Or a biopic without the music. The transcriptions for "If" and "This Place" are accurate although I can't say for sure about the one for "Big Yellow Taxi." This is very similar in style to the one produced for TTT - alternate tunings included (and oddly enough, Joni tunings are noted in this one ["C - 7 - - 7 - 3 - 7 - 4"]). The piano transcriptions also look accurate to me. - -Mark ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Jun 2008 13:08:42 -0700 (PDT) From: Peep Richman Subject: Hello Joni Peple from Bo Hi Everyone!!! I just now finished reading Digest V2008 # 99 and want to respond. I'm soooo behind in reading the Digest, but when I do (which can be everyday sometimes), I realize how much I miss you. Bob, thank you so much for posting the link to Fresh Air and Joni's interview. I love Fresh Air. After downloading the file I found that my media player wouldn't allow it to run. Sad me. Laura, I couldn't log in to your link and found that to be so frustrating but I have other resources I hope. Marion, moving can be (or always is) so traumatic. You want to create your new home, and it feels like forever to get unpacked and settled. I've moved so much I get dizzy even thinking about it, but never fear, all will eventually get finished!! Best of luck in your new digs! Mark (Angelo), just wanted to tell you that I really loved your posting re: "Twisted". You, and so many other people in our Digest family, are such excellent writers!!! What a pleasure I have reading the Digest!!! HAPPY BE-LATED Birthday to Gary Z.!!! I sincerely hope you are beginning a brand new year that will be a joyous one with fabulous new adventures and the gift of fulfilling many of your dreams. I'd like to think Joni gave you "Shine" as a gift. I've been listening to Joni's "Dreamland". Track 15 "For The Roses" and especially "Both Sides Now" are so especially moving. There's so much raw emotion in Joni's voice. And the a musical arrangement moves me so. I adore all of Joni's Cd's and I actually don't have a favorite...that's impossible for me as each body of her work on any CD holds such amazing help for me. And, regardless of how often I listen to any one of her Cd's, I'm breathless with awe. Joni's painting on the inside cover of "Dreamland" is so revealing....she says so much about her feelings in her painting as she gazes around the corner. I hope this posting finds everyone healthy, happy and full of Joni healing and pleasure in hearing her golden voice. (Give me some time, I feel like I'm losing mine...) But I'm getting little sparky seeds of a story in my heart and mind, from the sweet inspiration of In France They Kiss on Main Street: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jFM-ZX5Trro One of Joni's happiest songs, imo. Makes you want to wreck your stockings in some jukebox dive, don't it? I feel like I *knew* Chicky and Ron and Lead Foot Melvin with his hot wire head (yes, great line, Mark!). (Aside: www.hotwire.com is a good site to go to for good deals on blue hotel rooms and flights tonight, etc.) You all must have your own stories about these guys from when we were wild in the old days. Quelle coincidence that just yesterday I took my brother and nephews to the highways, so these wild days are now fresh in my mind. Yep, we took the road to Baljennie to our old hometown. We even "cruised through the hamburger stand" where we would hang out in high school. (Well, my brother did not hang out with me. He's 10 years younger. By "we" I mean me and my friends.) Actually, we would just meet up there to see who had the car, and then we'd take off out of there w/ whoever did get wheels that night. Our Chicky was named Archie, and we really DID have a Ron (who had his own car, so it was always a possibility to jump in HIS backseat), and there was a Leadfoot Melvin who was more like a greaser (or a "ditty", we called them then), and his friend Lumpy. One night we ended up with Melvin and Lumpy just cruising the highways and byways. We snuck into a pool hall for pitches in some swanky retirement village and promptly got kicked out. This was the 70s version of Happy Days (those kids with their cokes and chocolate bars), I guess, because, well.....oh, never mind! LOL...okay, let's just say we had Acid, booze, and ass Needles, guns, and grass Lots of laughs Lots of laughs In a good way. And NO! No needles and no guns, of course, and only a few did acid. It was more like a big party in a car, so no ass, either. We'd bring us out a bottle and have some laughs. No designated drivers in those days so we are lucky to be alive. Dumb kids!!!! But we sure did have Fun Fun Fun til our daddies took the T-Birds away. Oh! There was one night when Patti had the car (the family station-wagon, a dorky Oldsmobile, but who cared?) and we went to the big summer happening, the Monroe Firemen's Carnival. After we left the moons and Junes and ferris wheel and all that, we thought it would be a good idea to ring the bells at St. Peter's Episcopal Church on the town green. At midnight. In the War of Independence Rock 'n' roll rang sweet as victory. Chicky and Ron and Melvin (Bob and Jim and Jimmy) pulled the ropes, and you should have heard that chapel pealing silver bells! LOL...It came ringing up like Christmas bells and rapping up like pipes and drums. Betsy (Olana, who gave me STAS) and I were in the getaway car, laughing it all away, when the minister came out! UH OH!!!!! We didn't want to stand and fight -- we wanted to take off outta there -- but we couldn't leave those choir boys there alone w/ no escape. The minister and his wife were actually very kind. They invited us in to their parlor and explained how we just might be disturbing the peace (moi? disturb the peace?) and that we should never do this again. They didn't even call our parents or the cops. Phew! So we weren't broken in churches and schools And molded to middle class circumstance And we were rolling rolling rock 'n' rolling Oh, you wanted a JONI* story? I'm sorry. I got carried away with that song (not a mysterious song at all) and all the Joni spirit that's inside of me. Laughing it all away, w/ kisses like bright flags, Patti P. * I was sorta/kinda Joni on Sunday at the little family Banquet my cousin put on for visiting family. She announced: "There is NO mayonnaise in any of the salads.'" Mayonnaise lovers asked "Why not?" and she pointed a bony finger at me and said: "JONI over there hates mayonnaise." _________________________________________________________________ Now you can invite friends from Facebook and other groups to join you on Windows Live Messenger. Having missed doing the Sunday crossword puzzle, I'm looking at it now, and see that the 76 across clue is: "Sobriquet for young Mitchell" (Nine letters, and I know the 7th letter is "A".) Maybe it's not referring to Joni, but what else am I to think? What other Mitchell can there be? ; ) And then in the ARTS section, the big headline is: "Back to the Garden", about the revival of a local poetry festival.
