That was a great story, Kevin. I could really relate. Such an appropriate song for that situation. I've only been into a Starbucks two or three times so, I'm not sure what music they're playing in their Australian stores. It's probably piped too. There was great controversy when Starbucks tried to open a store in Balmain here in Sydney. Balmain is a very affluent area with mostly home businesses like, interior designers, movie producers, talent agencies, that sort of thing. The people are very proud of the fact that they have so far managed to keep all the other chains out of the area. They stopped McDonalds from opening a store there. Pizza Hut opened one down the road but closed again a few months later. They boycotted and petitioned them. When Starbucks announced a store there, they tried the same thing. Not in out area. Balmain is well known in Sydney for it's boutique coffee houses and cafes. Finally, the local council announced in the local newspaper that they are aware of the disapproval of the residents to a Starbucks opening in Balmain but they weren't doing anything illegal and therefore could not be prevented from opening. Starbucks, Balmain is now one of their busiest stores. Now it's full of beauty parlour blondes with credit card eyes. I9ve been a longtime fan of Alec Mapa. He9s done tons of Broadway and television, but like Leslie Jordan, also an incredible talent, is best known for gay, supporting roles on well known television shows. He plays Vern, Gabby9s best friend on Desperate Housewives, and the gossip reporter on Ugly Betty. I9m going to see his show at Joe9s Pub called America9s Gaysian Sweetheart. In an interview with him on Broadwayworld.com they asked: TJ: What kind of music do you like? MAPA: Anything Joni Mitchell, Dolly Parton, Rickie Lee Jones, Rufus Wainwright. I'm a show queen, so Patti LuPone is the queen of the goddamn universe and that's all there is to it. I'll also get hooked on a soundtrack and listen to it on a loop. My last obsession was Grey Gardens. I can't put that CD on with my husband in the room or he'll leave me. So there it is, folks. The definitive genetic link between Joni and Show Queens. Smurph, rejoice! Jerry ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Jun 2008 09:45:20 -0400 From: "Mark Angelo" Subject: Re: SJC...Joni, Coffee, World Domination, and Desperate Housewives... Thanks for sharing this "insider info" about Starbucks Kevin, and and to Mark as well for the story about how Starbucks was ultimately successful in a tale of classist struggle, ultimately positioning itself in an upscale area of Sydney. I've yet to venture into one in the 2 years since returning to Florida, but I did go frequently while I was in Tucson (especially the one inside the nearby Albertson's grocery store). I hardly fall into the category of the elite you describe but I didn't mind paying the $5 or whatever for the Venti (hate that word - sounds so condescending) vanilla frappuccinos. The crushed ice was a refreshing relief from the heat, and I justified the $5 by rationalizing it as a complete meal - maybe not "balanced" *ahem* but it served as my lunch or dinner at that price. I've never seen one of the HDTV's you mention - it's been over 2 years after all - but I was wondering from what you said do they have a real-time feed of the music and video signal from HQ or simply distribute media every so often - sounds like a live signal from your description. I was surprised to learn after venturing into a Border's with it's Seattle's Best Coffee (as opposed to Barnes and Nobles with a Starbucks contract) from my brother who worked at Border's at the time that Seattle's Best Coffee is itself a division of Starbucks and thus their main competitor has largely been themselves - what a feat of capitalism!! I remember Starbucks was the only place I've heard Aimee Mann singing a cover of "River". Yes I agree they do have better playlists than most symbols of American culture, and having Joni sign on with their label graced so many of us with "Shine", and with some irony, delivered a more eloquent and serenely resigned version of her long-asked question, "How long, HOW LONG Big Business Man?" (WTRF) and of necessity the culture of consumerism which enables the symbiotic relationship. In their effort to justify a rather costly product by using marketing to appeal to the superimposed strata of American culture , which of course the multitudes are inculcated to emulate, have they contributed to their own recent decline, having to bring out the boards and the nails to any number of stores? Have they seen the gas gauge and the damage done, a little bit of it in everyone? They help supply one of a number of stimulants to keep America's culture of indulgence and mania going, but when America's less-discussed addiction to oil begins to cost more than their addiction to caffeine, windfall oil company profits seem to indicate where America goes to obtain their real "fix", at the pump. Overpriced coffee houses selling elusive dreams and vague desires, not so much. Have you heard about them pulling a Rachel Ray ad because her scarf looked "too Arab"? (Yeah, Rachel Ray is a terrorist. Oh, my head is in my hands.) The ANSWER coalition and other progressive groups are calling for a boycott. I'd put lots of lemon in it and it was like sipping "our tea and lemonade." So maybe Barrista Kevin will be getting more business! Glad you got a job, Kev. Enjoy the music! And Starbucks sells some kind of tea and lemonade mixture, don't they? Yeah, that's what I had there on Joni Day. My brother calls Starbucks "Fivebucks" because whenever he brings my teen-aged niece there it costs him five bucks. I have yet to share the second half of my experience there on September 25th when SHINE was released. I have the three-hour long set list in my draft box somewhere. Three hours of Joni, sitting in some cafe, was too intense to share at the time. Imaginez-vous! Laughing and crying, I was captive on the carousel of time that felt more like a roller coaster or a jerky time machine, zipping me back and forth between the hope and the hopelessness I've witnessed thirty years. It was based on a real guy, an eccentric Dentist in North Carolina who had all of this scrap metal and the like and would even take junk & scrap in trade for dental work. As best I can tell, Joni did record a demo of the song and when she toured the UK Joe Boyd handed copies of the tape out to popular British folk acts of the day. The Ian Campbell Group picked up on Dr. Junk and included it on their 1968 release along with "The Circle Game". Most recently, Big Yellow Taxi has recorded the song and released it this year along with many other unreleased Joni-gems. You can hear a 2-minute sample of the song and its Bo Diddley beat at: http://cdbaby.com/cd/bigyellowtaxi6 And while you're there you might as well get yourself a copy (before it sells out again). Without healing, what would happen to the hurt and harm and damage done? Do you see what I mean, Michael? If you don't, I'll get more specific, if you want, so that you can try to understand by what I mean by the beginning of healing when we've reached the true beginning of survival. Shine on all the dark ladders going down, down, down, down.. And I'll be damned if I don't keep "falling up, falling up, falling up," just I hear Rickie Lee singing it up through my CD player right now and next shall be Shine . Jeannie (obviously kinda dreamy and peaceful under a starry night, under these new political circumstances, right now as I sit outside with my dogs and this beautiful healing wind is blowing our way) PS: Yes, Barack Obama is a politician, but I guarantee you with my heart and soul he's for real in his heart and soul and not just another one of them-there radiation-rose colored sun glassed politicians.
