I grabbed DJRD today with me for my drive to and from work. That gets me through a cd. Hi Monika, Does it count if you put a song on repeat part way through the album and then after it plays about 3 times you listen to the rest of the album? I've got DJRD in my car. I've got Song to a Seagull here. I've got Dreamland in my shower. I don't notice that Joni is so much in my days, but she is. Love, Laura PS. Hejira is the crown jewels but it would lose some magic if heard too often. It is my favorite but I take care not to play it too often. Similarly, The English Patient is my all time fave movie, one of the few movies I own actually, but I try not to watch it more than once every two years. On the flip side, I listened to Shine all the way through a few times when it first came out and all but loathed it each time, so that one will not suffer from over playing. I know there are fervent Shine supporters on the list--nothing personal. Just listened to DJRD all the way through yesterday for a change from ipod shuffle, and loved the sheer panorama of it. It's surely Joni's most epic work, taking all the time it needs to get underway and then traveling the globe from Harlem to Brazil to Indian reservations to Cuba to Florida. And this exploding line caught my attention for the first time: "The fatted flake and sizzle in their mink oil.." Dave Subject: Re: Last Joni, favorite Joni, most popular Joni Herjira is like a $3,000 suit or that fierce cocktail dress(trying to be gender friendly for all the list..lol)... or the "good china"..You love it..It makes you feel amazing.. but if you can't wear it everyday... Nothing wrong with that..It can be your favorite and your least listened too..Now I am off to listen to hejira! :) merk54@aol.com wrote: The last Joni album I listened to was Shine.? I just bought some new speakers for my home system and decided to play Shine as the first album on them.? Very unusual for me - normally when I have something new to christen (new stereo equipment, new car, etc.) I always play Hejira first. This lead me to an interesting thought.? When asked what my favorite Joni album is, I always answer Hejira.? However, if you asked me what album I listened to the most, I would say DJRD.? And really, since it's release, I've been listening primarily to Shine (which sounds amazing on my new speakers by the way!). This might all be semantics, but can I really call Hejira my favorite, if it's not the album I listen to the most?? It's certainly the one I admire the most, and it touches me in ways that no other album has, but it's no longer?the one I reach for first when looking for some Joni to play.? Just wondering if other people have a "favorite" Joni that isn't their most?played Joni. Once again Joni was light years ahead of everyone regarding our culture. Don't get me started on this subject! Thoroughbred racing needs a serious overhaul. We condemn bullfighting, dog fighting, cockfighting as cruel but this 'sport' is at the center of our so called culture. It is equally as cruel yet it is sanctioned because of the insane amount of money to be made off of these beautiful animals. The filly who just broke both her legs after finishing second in the Kentucky Derby & had to be put down immediately is just one example of something that happens every week on tracks around the country. They start training baby horses far too young before their legs are developed & run them on hard surfaces & a large percentage of them are thrown away, taken off to slaughter, because of injuries or later when they just aren't making enough money anymore. Horse racing is barbaric. I know many people who are doing whatever they can to rescue & rehab & adopt out these horses before they are slaughtered. Here is one story that recently ran in the NYT http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/17/sports/othersports/17horses.html?_r=1&sq=h orse%20rescue&st=cse&adxnnl=1&oref=slogin&scp=1&adxnnlx=1211382816-y6M5FzOxt ceeFMoRS3wY3w Kate ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 May 2008 08:22:20 -0700 (PDT) From: Monika Bogdanowicz Subject: Re: Last Joni, favorite Joni, most popular Joni I do believe you can. My favorite Joni album is THOSL but I don't think if you racked up all the number of listens to it vs. the number of listens to other albums, that it would be greatest in number. Lately, I had been listening to a lot of For The Roses (prior to my DJRD drive) but that has passed. I always get into different moods which call for different albums. I would say there was a point in time where I listened to Blue most (that is my second favorite Joni album) but I don't think that is the case these days. -Monika merk54@aol.com wrote: This might all be semantics, but can I really call Hejira my favorite, if it's not the album I listen to the most?? That's the amazing thing about the multi-layered Joni Mitchell: a person can listen to her albums for YEARS and still, one day seemingly out of the blue (no pun intended), notice something -- a turn of phrase, a dual meaning, etc. -- never before noticed. I've been listening to Joni now for 31 years and that still happens to me. As for last Joni: Shine, because it was in the CD player of my partner's vehicle. I was about to insert an Ani DiFranco CD, and noticed something was already there ... and it was Shine, so I listened to it all the way through. I love some cuts (One Week Last Summer; If I Had a Heart; Night of the Iguana; Strong and Wrong; If) ... others not so much (Shine, in particular). In some ways it reminds me of TTT, and, 10 years after its release, I still can't get into that one. I like Shine, but I'm just not blown away by it. Favorite Joni: continues to be, since discovering it (and Joni) in 1977, Hejira. Most popular Joni: also Hejira. Weighty as it is, I can "wear" it everyday. Back in 1977, I used to fall asleep to it every night. It's very likely the Joni album I've played most (somewhere in the 1000s of times, I would guess). Last weekend I woke up in the mood for THOSL, and put that on. Because most of my CDs are stored in a 400-CD player, more or less in chron order (within one artist's offerings), Hejira played afterwards ... followed by DJRD (LOVE that album, still) ... followed by Mingus ... followed by disc 2 of Shadows and Light. (Disc 1 is temporarily misplaced.) It was a good, good music day!
