"Edith and the Kingpin", "Shades of Scarlet Conquering", and "Amelia" come to mind but the problem for me with some of these tracks is that they are in danger of falling into the "Big Yellow Taxi" category for me, in other words I have played them so many times through the years that they have lost that je ne sais quoi that had initially made them so beautiful or alluring to me. These songs I then put to rest for awhile so they don't become "Big Yellow Taxis" which is the only song on "Shine" I must skip for now, I love all of the others. I then revisit the songs, especially after reading a revelation - never gossip thank goodness from any of us contributers!! ;-) - from one of the many posters on the list, or a review from the JMDL library, or just because and find fascination once again in the new perspective in which I can envision the song. Having said that I would have to pick from the more recent material as much of the older material is "on hold" in my mind for awhile. (I did just reorder my lost CD versions of THOSL and DJRD last night and look forward to listening to those once again). I love the open tunings she chose for TTT (*cough* somewhat aghast that it only ranks #23 out of 27 in the current JMDL album poll) and specifically "Love Puts On A New Face", "Face Lift", and "Stay In Touch" - they are beautiful with intriguing chords played on a unique variant of her many open tunings and the sparse arrangement on them reminds me very much of the songs on Hejira. I have been listening to "Two Grey Rooms" (NRH) a lot recently and would consider it as my favorite beautiful song at this moment ...in the middle of this continent, in the middle of our time on Earth... in it's simplicity yet it's ability to provoke such powerful serene but wistful visual imagery. I was amazed in the way one is completely fooled by the subject matter of "Man From Mars" to discover that the song was written about someone other than herself and how he dealt with love unrequited. However that is what makes me love Joni's material, it always contains something you just quite didn't "get" until repeated listening some time later. Now I want the book, movie. documentary and mini-series!! They all write so well and Estrella, in particular, is a prolific writer with a photographic memory of every event. I was thinking this afternoon that they should all have a Laurel Canyon reunion with Joni, Croz, Stills, Joel Berstein et al and Heny Diltz could photograph it all! Thanks Kate for letting us know about the Henry exhibit and slide show, Argh, I wish I could come up for it. Would do it in a minute if I wasn't currently working 7 days a week ;-( Glad you got to hang out with him - he is such a great person. In other news I just found out that none other than Joe Jackson is performingat a historic theater right down the street from me this Wednesday night! I am going to try to drag myself over to that one, if at all possible! Wonderful stuff happening all around these days! Something as good as Across the Universe- I don't recall the conversation here about that movie because I hadn't seen it yet. I just saw it & absolutely LOVED it. I didn't expect to because I'd heard mixed reviews. I loved how Julie Taymor brought forth characters & a story by picking from the catalogue of the Beatles- generally using them in ways that were different than the original songs intent but that really worked in metaphorical ways. One of the most jaw dropping for me was "she's so heavy" Brilliant! Really the whole movie was incredibly creative & brilliant & evoked the essence of that time, in my opinion. Having lived through that time myself, lots of my own experience showed up amazingly in that movie. She captured that slice of time better than any other movie I have ever seen about the era. I didn't realize who had directed the movie until I saw the credits but I knew that whoever had done this project had lived & really understood that time period. And even better, made it relevant to today. Kate >I spent half the day reading every bit from the ladies and was just in a dream. Now I want the book, movie. documentary and mini-series!!
