When I first heard 'Night in the City, I thought yodelling was definitely part of Joni's repertoire of singing skills, so Joni in Vogue looking very Swiss maid, plaits, high on a hill with a lonely goat herd cooking good omelettes and stews...it's possible isn't it? I'm always a fan of black and white photos (they have a certain elegance if you ask me) and photos of people with their guitars. I think they really do capture Joni's essence at the time. Anyway, I browsed through these photos last night an hour or so before I went to bed and I had a strange dream resulting from probably doing so. I had a dream that I was friends with a girl who looked like Joni and I was friends with the girl just for that reason alone. The place was packed by 6:30 with Wavy Gravy holding court, Jim flitting in and out of the back room, and many "beautiful people with passport smiles". I tried to view the photographs, took some photos myself, and ended up in conversation with an acquaintance and another woman. The second woman was wearing an original paisley print dress, and the three of us happily remininsced about vintage 60's clothes and the joy of still fitting into our 40+ year old clothes. Trina, who was wearing the paisley, confided that she was a "Lady of the Canyon" and had had a boutique in the East Village. I launched into my spiel; "that's what i wanted to be when I was at UCLA, but was too responsible , got a job," blithering on. Trina said, "NO, I'm one of THE ladies of the canyon". PENNY dropped; TRINA!!!!! Here I was talking to the long-lost Trina, of Trina, Annie and Estrella. We continued to swap stories and business cards. I greeted more of my friends; taking pictures of them. The next high-profile visitor was Joan Baez. She was greeted by Jim and toured the room with him. I want to return to really see the phots; besides Jim's rock star photos, he had a series titled 11/22/63 New York which stopped most of the viewers in their tracks. The raw emotion was captured flawlessly. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 9 May 2008 16:43:19 -0600 From: "Les Irvin" Subject: Ladies of the Canyon Darice wrote: > Trina said, "NO, I'm one of THE ladies of the canyon". > Here I was talking to the long-lost Trina, > of Trina, Annie and Estrella. I know this will mean a different thing to different people: i guess that is what i am trying to elicit. >>> I don't know where to begin with this one, Garret, there are so many for as many reasons. Undoubtedly, my earliest really "beautiful" song was "Judgment of the Moon and Stars", it moved me not only with the music but also the lyrics, so succinct and emotional. The piano really sings a duet with Joni, it's a character in itself. From the first listening I loved this song and felt it personified Joni's talent and still, to this day, have to stop when it comes on my i-Pod and listen, it's beauty everlasting to my ears. From Miles of Aisles I listened over and over and over to Jericho and Love or Money, I enjoy them to this day too. The beauty of those songs was that I had "new" Joni to listen to. I had heard them in concert and had to have them! When the album came out I was thrilled. Later on, The Hissing of Summer Lawns, honestly, kind of left me in it's wake a bit. I didn't know what to think of it - I've come to love it now but was confused initially. The only song I really liked then was Edith and the Kingpin and still think that's a "beautiful" song. Now moreso because it was the song which allowed me to move with Joni into a new era of sound. The most beautiful version, for me, is on Shadow & Light. Hejira is, in it's entirety, a "beautiful" album. I don't think there is a song on it I don't love. "The Silky Veils Of Ardor", to me was so reminiscent of her early "girl and her guitar" songs, I couldn't help but like it on the first listen and think it's beautiful. And who could forget "Dancin' Clown?" it has a place of beauty all on it's own... it is a beautifully horrible number; though I can imagine her penning this one flying on coke, the pace is just too frantic not to have been. Passion Play & Slouching Towards Bethlehem both get the nod for beautiful songs as does The Sire of Sorrow. Harlem in Havana has my vote for beautiful later releases. I love the instrumentation and the flavor of the song. Beginning with the CD Both Sides Now Joni seemed obsessed with making "grandma" music for a while and it was all very... beautiful... and not in a good way to me, except for the title track of the chocolate box which inexplicably brought me to tears on first listen. When her new release "Shine" came out I detested it on first listen. I understand it and there are some parts that are brilliant but it just hasn't sat well in my psyche overall. So while many of you think it's one of her best, it just hasn't spent much time in my CD player. I have not bothered to convert it for my i-Pod and hadn't really planned to but I can't disappoint Patti and not have ALL of Joni's releases available on i-Pod demand so I may do it at some point... just not any time soon. My picks, for what they're worth. I guess the Fred Neil reference makes me think that. And now that I think about it, I guess I'd heard of Crosby being there. (just picked up up his '88 autobio, so I guess I'll find out) I don't ever see much written about whatever music scene was in Coconut Grove, tho I hear it alluded to every so often. Seems there was kind of a singer-songwriter scene there? Shouldn't it be more famous than it is? as a scene? or did people not get much work done there, lol, and so it was not that important? heck maybe by now somebody wrote a book about it... :) EM ps: so the Banyans WERE in FL! S. there is a series of short white lines that divides the lanes. A solid yellow line on your side of these white lines means no passing for the traffic going in your direction (usually on curves or going up a hill where visibility is blocked). If there is a 'double yellow line' (solid yellow line on both sides of the broken white line down the middle) it means no passing in either direction. Not sure if that is entirely clear.
