I got a real kick out of his recount of that painting. I think Bob mentioned how Joni's relationships with drummers Don Alias and John Guerin (boom boom pachyderm) were far more meaningful as portayed in this book than previously recorded. I can't be nostalgic for records as those were never part of my days. However, I have started a record collection (so far I have very few, only a handful or two) which I intend to add to. The idea of a record and everything that pertains to it appeals to me greatly. Plus, when you do see that cover on a big record as opposed to a little cd case, it really blows you away. I remember when my sister bought me Hejira on record as a gift a while ago. I just stared it for a while--the cover, the insert even though I own it on cd and have seen the cover/insert thousands of times by now. Someday...I hope to be able to play those records....I have to find a record player... Well, folks, I must admit to being a bit ZEALOUS and PASSIONATE when it comes to my record collection... I LOVE my vinyl. Like David, I plan on keeping my record collection and actually have ADDED to it from time to time; just two weeks ago, I bought a dozen "new" used albums. I (along with many other audiphiles) feel the sound is much richer than CD's... aside from the "cracks & pops", of course, but I try to keep them clean. Yes, I convert some vinyl to CD's for the simplicity of selecting tracks at random or convenience of playing them in our cars or portable CD players. Not only do I have a hard time letting go of some things but most of my records have a special place in my heart. Aside from my attraction for the music-when I pick up an album, I can pretty much tell you when I bought it and what was going on in my life at the time; some of my older original albums are like time capsules to me. I also love the size, allowing Joni's artwork to be seen & lyrics to be read without a magnifying glass. So, Monika, you can see in me what you missed by not having records previously in your life, although I know you're still very passionate about your music anyway. As far as turntables go, there are many good ones still available. When my old Technics finally died a few years back, I went to a nearby PC Richard's store & found they stocked FOUR DIFFERENT new ones (because people want them to convert their records into CD's, I was told.) And there are loads of good used ones available from tag sales, thift stores and Craig's List. I also recently borrowed an ION USB turntable from a friend ($149.95 at various stores) which plugs directly into your computer via a USB cord. You can play 45's, 33's & 78's and convert them to digital files or CD's (even getting rid of noise, if you so desire). It works REALLY well and I'm putting it on my "wish list" for my birthday this year. Kenny B ************** Wondering what's for Dinner Tonight? Get new twists on family favorites at AOL Food. Has there ever been a more philosophical, yet accessible, songwriter (I'm afraid The Bobster, for all his undying merits, is too often too obscure for me)? For me, Rickie Lee Jones has matched her on occasions, and Laura Nyro - only women, you may note, though Brooooce has had his moments and Todd Rundgren many, many more. But yes, Joni by a nose (or should that be a filter-tip?). For me, Hissing and Hejira produced the most gems per album, with Edith and the Kingpin (especially the last line), Dion;'t Interrupt the Sorrow, Shades of Scarket Conquering and Harry's House vying for supremacy on the former - the last nicks it for the line "Paper their walls to keep their gut reactions hid" - and Hejira, Refuge, Amelia and Song for Sharon duelling on the latter, with Hejira finally emerging as my most cherished piece of Joni philosophy:B I'm traveling in some vehicle I'm sitting in some cafe A defector from the petty wars That shell shock love away There's comfort in melancholy When there's no need to explain It's just as natural as the weather In this moody sky today In our possessive coupling So much could not be expressed So now i'm returning to myself These things that you and i suppressed I see something of myself in everyone Just at this moment of the world As snow gathers like bolts of lace Waltzing on a ballroom girl You know it never has been easy Whether you do or you do not resign Whether you travel the breadth of extremities Or stick to some straighter line... So I sat back for awhile on this one. But the day has passed and there haven't been too many answers to this one. I think it's a hard question, Monika, because, first of all, there are a few definitions of 'philosophy' . From Merriam-Webster online: Main Entry: phi7los7o7phy Pronunciation: \f?-'ld-s(?-)fe\ Function: noun Inflected Form(s): plural phi7los7o7phies Etymology: Middle English philosophie, from Anglo-French, from Latin philosophia, from Greek, from philosophos philosopher Date: 14th century 1 a (1): all learning exclusive of technical precepts and practical arts (2): the sciences and liberal arts exclusive of medicine, law, and theology (3): the 4-year college course of a major seminary b (1)archaic : physical science (2): ethics c: a discipline comprising as its core logic, aesthetics, ethics, metaphysics, and epistemology 2 a: pursuit of wisdom b: a search for a general understanding of values and reality by chiefly speculative rather than observational means c: an analysis of the grounds of and concepts expressing fundamental beliefs 3 a: a system of philosophical concepts b: a theory underlying or regarding a sphere of activity or thought 4 a: the most basic beliefs, concepts, and attitudes of an individual or group b: calmness of temper and judgment befitting a philosopher Secondly, there is the fact that Joni has written so many songs that I would say fit definition number 2 above. I don't know that I can come up with just one song that would be Joni's most philosophical. She was writing philosophical lyrics almost from the get-go. 'Song to a Seagull' is philosophical as are most of the songs on 'Shine' as is 'Both Sides Now', etc, etc and so forth. If I were going with her most sprawling piece of philosophical exploration, particularly of the balance between negative and positive, I would name 'Don Juan's Reckless Daughter'. If I wanted to name her most elegant yet relatively succinct rumination on life in general, at this particulary moment I would say 'Banquet'. Tomorrow I might say something different. 'Shadows and Light' was an excellent choice and my hat is off to anon anon for choosing that one. 'Sweet Bird' is a personal favorite of mine as well.
