I'll get in on this. Where do you begin? Joni's words are why I love her songs so much. I love graphic design but words fill me with pictures. If anyone has ever downloaded one of my desktop wallpapers from www.jmdl.com/wallpaper they will know that I always include what I feel is the most poignant line of the song. The one line that sums up Joni to me is from Black Crow; "In search of love and music my whole life has been". Some of the most explosive lines for me are: "It's cloud illusions I recall". Both Sides, Now. "Beware of the powers of moons". I Had a King. "We talk of love in terms of sacrifice and compromise". Last Chance Lost. "There are no victimless crimes I know of". Nothing Can Be Done. "Whatever makes your time feel satisfying". Shiny Toys. "All that's left is dying and all that lives is getting out". Urge For Going. :Drive your bargains, push your papers, win your medals, fuck your strangers. Don't it leave you on the empty side". Woman of Heart and Mind. "We're only particles of Change, I know. Orbiting around the sun". Hejira. You don't look a day over 99. Seriously, this is such a bonus to being on this list. I really look forward to what you have in store each month. There have been some amazing covers over the years. Believe it or not, I have actually heard some that surpass Joni herself. Then there are those I wish I hadn't heard at all. I'm into making lists at the moment so, here are some of my favourite Joni covers: Marcie - Doug Ashdown The Dawntreader-Big Yellow Taxi That Song About The Midway - Bonnie Raitt I Think I Understand - Christine Sullivan The Fiddle and The Drum - A Perfect Circle For Free - Matthew Luke Sandoval (actually changed my opinion of the song) Woodstock - Rose Bygrave The Circle Game - Jim Harmon Carey - Judd Grossman All I Want - Natalie Merchant Blue - Sarah McLachlan California - Wilson Phillips The Last Time I Saw Richard - kind of like spitting A Case of You - Brian Kennedy Help Me - Wynona Judd Same Situation - Gregson & Collister (Christine Collister surpasses Joni on this one IMO) Edith and The Kingpin - George Michael (almost surpasses Joni) Shades of Scarlett Conquering - Christine Collister Shadows and Light - Robin Adler & Dave Blackburn Blue Motel Room - Karrin Allyson Love Or Money - Ian Shaw Jericho - k.d. lang A Chair In The Sky - Kjellerbandet Ladies Man - Chaka Khan The Tea leaf Prophecy - Cris Williamson & Holly Near Sex Kills - Roine Stolt The Magdalene Laundries - Emmylou Harris Harlem In Havana - Ian Shaw Man From Mars - Laurent Cugny (This one surpasses Joni for me too. The arrangement, the voice. He changed my opinion of this song) Andy Milne is the standout for me in this volume. Wonderful stuff. Yes, very Herbie. Love it. Then I went to a record store owned by a friend of mine and ask him wich Joni album I should pick. He went around and around in his conversation but finally said that C&S was +pretty;. I played it when I got home and, as I remember, for the next months, I couldn't listen anything else. Not only +it is a brilliant work and was the first major indication of the jazz that would later be so integral to her music;, but, IMHO, also presents a shift in Joni's voice more mature, I think. I later continued to buy her records: Blue came first and then, on the same day, I bought LOTC and FTR. I didn't like Blue that much when I first heard it (I love it now), and LOTC is still, to me, a strange album: it haves great songs but, somehow, I feel that they don't go well together as a unit, an album. FTR, in the other hand, is a great record. "Electricity" is one of those songs that I like to like: is not an 'important' song and the lyrics are pretty simple; but it haves that 'je ne sais quoi" and because it's 'lack of importance' it feels a lot like my song. It's also almost the same thing with "The Silky Veils of Ardor" (DRRD), but in that case I do know that I like Joni's voice. A lot :-) (Sorry for the poor english) Cumprimentos, Samuel > Mark wrote: Hi Samuel, Indeed, I was around 12 years of age in Saudi Arabia, our choices over there were VERY limited, I think they had one English channel TV network - only broadcast in the evening, and one radio station which ARAMCO - the oil company, now nationalized and state owned - would play somewhat recent US releases on, and I remember taping the broadcast of C&S to my parent's reel to reel tape player. Anyhow the more I played it, the more I loved it's every song. I have listened to it so much in the past I rarely play it now, it's every verse practically memorized, but it is a brilliant work and was the first major indication of the jazz that would later be so integral to her music, and IMHO should have won the Grammy it was nominated for that year. I don't recall hearing another Joni album until I came back to the US of necessity (ARAMCO only provided schooling until 9th grade - - after that you had to leave home to attend a boarding school somewhere) and worked my way back with FTR and earlier works, while purchasing THOSL and Hejira as they were released. Overall, a really nice performance- and I LOVE Joe's work on the piano. Joy's vocals are a bit shrill for me at times but, for the most part, nicely done. I like where her voice climbs during each line of the verse: "You hurry>to the blackness>to the blankets>to lay down>an impression> and your loneliness" which is a neat derivation from Joni's original. However, I can't imagine why the line, "You settle for less than fascination" was changed to "You settle for less than separation." Do you think she just forgot the correct word or intentionally did that? And, I've always felt, "When the closing lights strip off the shadows from this strange new flesh you've found" to be such a beautiful, sensual, poetic line in the song. Joy eliminates "the shadows from" creating a line that makes no sense; the closing lights wouldn't "strip off this strange new flesh you've found" unless you were torturing the person with a laser beam or something. Too bad these flaws are so obvious because the rest of the song is so well done, especially the segue into "A Case of You" and back to "Down To You" at the end. ************** Wondering what's for Dinner Tonight? Maybe I'm just trying to console myself, but lately I've been wondering if we, in the press, are missing the biggest story of the moment: people slowly coming to their senses..... ......Still, maybe the good news is the bad news, if it means we stop tearing up wildlife habitat and cutting down trees to make more golf courses....... .....I believe the Shoppes include a pink hotel, a boutique and a swinging hot spot..... Nevertheless, it seems at least remotely possible that we might stop razing old golf courses to build Shoppes and then razing woodlands to build new golf courses, if only because we don't have the money to support this kind of madness anymore. In which case, the good news is the bad news..... ....Maybe we're living right at the start of the Big Yellow Taxi Decade... On Friday, I did a Pazniokas: checked the paper's Top 10 most popular list on the website, and none of the stories was about Pastorzilla. Seven of the 10 fell into a Big Yellow Taxi category of stories having to do with less getting-and-spending, more exercise, smaller cars, conservation...... .....People were reading (and forwarding) stories about scaling down, not about scaling the campaign heights..... .....Not a complete rejection of Shoppes-ism, I admit, but a sharp turn away from reckless, conspicuous, self-bankrupting consumerism...... .....The good news is the bad news. Maybe all that money was kind of bad for us. In times of want, you don't waste. And maybe you figure out what you've got before it's gone. ******* Sorry, I really hacked that one up, trying to get to the Joni gist of it.
