White flags of winter chimneys Waving truce against the moon In the mirrors of a modern bank From the window of a hotel room (this passage, to me, is what turn this song from a great song to a truly amazing song. It comes just after the line 'But how can I have that point of view, when I'm always bound and tied to someone?' which isn't a great line, per se, even though what she is saying is filled with revelation, but it's the 'white flags' line that takes it out of yourself, into moments of being alone, into moments of beauty, where you realise that you are just a speck on the landscape on a marble in the void that is space. No, you're right and you're not imagining it--I have the original *Clouds* album, tho it's currently packed away in storage, so I'm not able to dig it out and have a fresh look. :-( The cd booklet has the art collage (which is not credited, alas) reproduced inside, but the lyrics are in typeface. I can't say for certain, but I think the lyrics were also typed in the original album. Might you be thinking also of *Ladies of the Canyon*, which does have hand-printed lyrics? Was listening to Joni outside yesterday with headphones and headphone amp and sooooooo many lines were exploding. Some more serious than others. But, as has happened many times before, I had a real " 'toin it up" (in the Lynyrd Skynyrd sense) moment when the line "he'd pisssssssss in their fireplace and drag them through turbulent indigo" played. And I was forced to play the song 3 or 4 times to fully re-absorb the twirling insanity. Yep that one always busts through the door like cranked up DEA agents dressed as clowns. Everybody dance! Ladies choice! the whole song is a nugget, but that line just causes it to accelerate out of control. You think she can sing it with a straight face? (if she even ever sings it) how could she not grin? or anyone, for that matter, who might do it on stage. :) Em ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 4 May 2008 08:26:33 -0700 (PDT) From: Laura Stanley Subject: Re: songbook Does anybody know when the revised copy of the Joni Mitchell Complete guitar songbook is going to be released? ____________________________________________________________________________________ Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! We have several down here in San Antonio and the feel in these Missions is surreal and Joni lyrics always shine their little lights with my little lights and that's when the healing and teardrops begin." ***** Yes. I can visualize and feel those words. I've been there, too! When my Mom and Dad and I had our little (24-hour) Magical Nostalgia Tour through Santa Barbara in August 2004 (recapturing memories from the Summer of Love, when we lived there), we were cruising through Montecito when we came upon a beautiful Spanish mission church. http://www.olmc-montecito.com/our_parish.htm (There is a photo gallery for anyone interested.) I said: "Let's go in and light some candles!" My parents had a hard time getting around. My Dad was legally blind; my Mom crippled with arthritis. My Dad agreed to go in and I held his hand so he wouldn't trip walking through the beautiful flower (hibiscus?)-lined paths to the front door of the church. It was gorgeous inside -- breathtaking, really -- and there were two racks of candles: one blue, and one red. I told my Dad we had to light the blue ones (for Joni and political reasons). And then I sang: In the church they light the candles And the wax rolls down like tears There is the hope and the hopelessness We've witnessed thirty-seven years. It was a beautiful moment in time. Then I was on a mission to find a beautiful spiritual retreat that Sister Anselm took our entire 8th grade class to. She was the "Singing Nun" with her guitar and very cool. We spent a whole day at this place, and I've never forgotten it. And we found it! It said "Private Property" and "Do Not Enter", but I pulled into the lemon-grove-lined driveway anyway. It made my parents nervous, they just didn't want to know, what I was seeing in the refuge of this road, but they let me continue anyway. So I pulled off into a forest Crickets clicking in the ferns Like a wheel of fortune I heard my fate turn turn turn It was as beautiful -- perhaps even more so -- than I had remembered. Jeannie or anyone else who has the urge for going on a mini cyber spiritual retreat, I make you welcome in here: http://www.lacasademaria.org/aboutus.html "The mission of La Casa de Maria is to provide, through its programs and environment, a nourishing place of peace where persons of all faiths can search for truth, engage in dialogue, experience personal growth, realize their self worth, embrace the sacred, then refreshed and renewed, participate more responsibly in the creation of a just and peaceful world, and a whole and healthful earth." There are the "Sadako Peace Gardens", and -- get this! -- "Robert Muller's Bench of Dreams." (You sure do get around, Bob!) It really is some semblance of a garden. Joni would love it here. I could just picture her playing her dulcimer or guitar in the lovely landscapes we just rediscovered. Oh, and speaking of Joni. JONI! That whole trip I had my eyes peeled for her. JMDL-rumor at the time had it that she was living in SB and dating an owner of an Italian restaurant, so I drove by every Italian restaurant I could find. In that church I had lit a candle for my Joni love luck, but I guess it went up in smoke because I never saw her. Oh, well. She was with me in spirit, and in my blood like you-know-what. Peace be with you on this Sunday! I did not know the origin of the inner artwork-which appears to be a collage made from the larger Bosch work, where someone has cut out Adam and Eve, and given them butterfly wings, with the outer "doors" of the triptych as a centerpiece. Presumably Joni did this, since her name is printed (type) underneath it. But the credits only say "cover art by Joni Mitchell" (she had also signed the cover painting, with 1969 under her name, partly cut off). Looking at the cover, it is really an awesome portrait, and lots of detail in the hair, etc. The bosch original circa 1503: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Garden_of_Earthly_Delights RR ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 4 May 2008 21:45:21 +0100 From: "Anita Tedder" Subject: RE: Re:The Exploding Line Thread MG was a sweet soul with a lot of wit and warmth. (33) of you have already downloaded it which is very cool. Thanks for snagging it, and hope you're digging it. Thanks to Monica, Mark & Joey for their help with the songs, and in case you missed the earlier link, never fear, here it is again: http://tinyurl.com/6zrvr3 And here are the songs: 1. Ellen Winters - I Don't Know Where I Stand: One of my favorite Joni songs, and this one kicks off with a jazzy Tuck Andress/Dave Blackburn-like jazz guitar sound. An original arrangement, complimented by Ellen's clear and lovely vocal makes this guitar/vocal duet a great way to kick off the first of our 3-digit volumes. 2. Lou Volpe - Both Sides Now: Instrumental lite-jazz from 2007, this cover employs Judy Collins' newer arrangement of BSN and features some fine clean Steely-Dan-like soloing from guitarist Volpe along with some dueling guitar-sax work. I like. 3. Adrienne Young: Another 2007 recording, featuring some nice interplay between the various musicians involved, electric piano, guitar, bass, drums. Adrienne's voice is strong and confident and this is a very solid cover. 4. Andy Milne - Amelia 5. Andy Milne - The Circle Game: More 2007 sounds, from a jazz artist who loves Joni so much he named his album "Dreams & False Alarms". We first heard from Andy with his funk/rap cover of "Free Man in Paris" a few years back, and these two sound miles away from that (not that I don't like that one, I do). These two tracks are actually a fine companion piece to Herbie's CD, and I'll bet you could fool lots of folks by telling them these *were* Herbie tracks. He employs a very similar spirit and technique, beginning with the original melodic line and then experimenting with dissonances and alternate melodies and rhythms, but I think he succeeds quite well on both of these instrumental tracks. 6. Pamela Luccarelli - Love Is Like A Big Brass Band: A brand-new recording of an old song, one that most of us have never even heard Joni sing! Pamela is an Italian singer (you can probably tell that from the name, right?) and is a huge Joni fan. And though she sings with a heavy accent, she does a beautiful job with the song and is complemented nicely by guitarist Filpo Vilardo. 7. Saskia Groenenberg - Black Crow: More 2007 jazz (Joni's gotta be loving that most of her covers come from the jazz world these days), this time from The Netherlands. Being from Holland means two things; first she is beautiful, second, she surrounds herself with fine musicians. She adds a slight slow funk touch to the effort, and invents some revised lyrics to the middle section which I have to say I'm not all that crazy about, but all in all I like what she and her band does with it. 8. Blue Lightning - Big Yellow Taxi: Taken from their 2007 live album, and this one definitely has a live-band feel to it. This isn't one of my favorites, but I do admit to loving the country fiddle work on it which salvages it and makes up for the fact that the drummer seems to stay about 1/4 of a beat behind. 9. David Colby - The Circle Game: Not sure when this one came out but you can tell from the little pops and clicks that it was NOT 2007. Likely from the early 70's, and I can't tell you much about Mr. Colby either. Pretty much a straight-up campfire version, guy w/ strumming guitar. Isn't Colby a type of cheese? And he blows a word, sings "reloading year" instead of "revolving year"...wtf, man? 10. Jeanne O'Connor - Chelsea Morning: More NYC vocal jazz from last year, Jeanne does a fine job, she adds some original flair to the vocals, her band is right there with her, and the arrangement is very bouncy and light, appropriate for the song. 11. John Doe - A Case Of You: Y'all know John Doe from X and The Knitters and his solo work. I've had the pleasure of meeting him and he is a nice, nice and very humble guy. And who knew he was a Joni fan? Well, we do now. This track came from his last sessions BUT was not included on his last album - you had to purchase the disc through the Yep Roc website and they threw this one in as a bonus track. Worked for me because I was buying the album anyway. John puts his unique stamp on this one, rocks it up a bit which is cool. Looking forward to seeing the re-formed X up at the Orange Peel later this month! 12. Kate Hammett-Vaughan - Sweet Sucker Dance: You can always count on Canadian jazz singer Kate to pick the deeeeeep Joni tracks, and I love her for it. And she doesn't have any problem stretching 'em out either, here she wraps her voice around a classic jazz trio sound and it's hard not to like it. While I haven't been totally enamored with some of her other arrangements, I like this one a lot better as the song matches the style. 13. Luce Dufault - Both Sides Now 14. Luce Dufault - River: Two strong performances by Canadian vocalist Dufault. Her BSN has a nice ebb & flow to it with some original chords tossed in there to add some tension. Some nice Bruce Hornsby-ish piano work on this one. And she throws a bit of a curve, using piano on BSN and Guitar on River. She also adds a background harmony vocal on River that works well. 15. Monica Richardson - Big Yellow Taxi: A unique solemn pace on this one, making it more of a mournful treatment, remind me of John's "Imagine" in terms of the way it sounds. Monica hails from NYC and still calls it her base - this track is from her 2007 release. 16. The Avengers - Night In The City: Another rarity, this one from 1969. Does not feature Diana Rigg/Emma Peel as far as I can tell which is a shame. It does feature a great swirling psychedelic/pop feel to it however. The Avengers were a New Zealand band, formed in Wellington in 1966. 17. Whim 'N Rhythm - Chelsea Morning: More collegiate acapella, this time from Yale University, an all-women group. This 1986 recording is a pretty rare one - not a lot of Joni covers done in that decade. And they do a good enough job with it I suppose. 18. Siegfried Posselt - Both Sides Now: Imported Cheese from Germany. I REALLY don't care for his voice, maybe you do. It has that annoying Glenn Yarborough quality to it, not to mention the 'talk-sing' thing he adds on at the end like a bad Elvis impersonation. 19. Vinnick Shepherd & Hart - Big Yellow Taxi: Canadian-grown country & folk-rock, these three young girls pay their respects to their heritage with a solid version of BYT to close us out. Whew! Thanks for letting me be a little tardy with this one, I will try and do better but don't hold me to it, OK?
