Hi Mick, Is this the Galway Arts Festival you're referring to? It will be in July and hte programme will be announced in June. It would be really very cool having the ballet come to Ireland. We could have a small Irish fest!!! And Joni might just attend the opening. Oki, probably dreaming there. It would be very exciting. I think it would be a great festival in which to showcase Joni's work. Fingers crossed. Of course, I'd happily hop across the water to Brighton to see the show. A year or two ago Patti Smith had an exhibition in a gallery in Sligo at this gallery: http://www.modelart.ie/ It was great. Being such a small town gave a very nice feel to the whole arrangement. Patti was walking around, her pictures were on show, she did an amazing accoustic set. My optimistic side is wondering if Joni would do something similar. Right so, back to reality GARRET Date: Sun, 6 Apr 2008 18:00:59 +0100 From: "Mick Kelly" Subject: The Fiddle and the Drum, European tour ? Looooooooooooove it. Somebody just asked me this weekend about this song (although not Joni's cover of it). There's a Nirvana song called "Territorial Pissings" I believe, that plays a brief clip of "come on people now, smile on your brother" and so on within it (not the Joni version of course). Somebody asked me what the words were in the chorus and who wrote it and when was it written, etc etc. I let this person know though I of course mentioned Joni's cover of it but he didn't seem too interested in that. -M Patti Parlette wrote: Chelsea Morning, Babies! Chaka is in my top 3 or 4 female vocalists and absolutely kills live, at whatever age she is now. Though the smooth dance groove sort of undermines the sanctity and multi-dimensionality of Hejira no one else could make it work as well as Chaka. The bed track sort of flattens out the journey from the breadths of extremity into a straight line. The montage was a bit flatly literal too but I did have a chuckle at Bush/McCain representing hopelessness! Dave p.s The NRH atrocity was sort of fascinating in the way that a song can be so wrongly heard and so earnestly remade lacking all taste and musicality. The fathers of the internet probably never imagined it being used THIS way! Bob< ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 Apr 2008 18:54:37 +0200 From: "Oddmund Kaarevik" Subject: covers & causes There are some covers on the latest compilation musicmeister Mueller put together that really touches me. First Dorothy Scott's "All I want" Her vulnerable, and bittersweet voice gets right trough my heart. "All I want" was the first Joni song that really got to my blood - my head - my soul. It's one that sticks with me. It's the one I will remember if I should forget everything else. Joni's version's are all good or great. She is Joni, she's the best. But this version has captured some of the blueness in the text. It's really a blues, and I think it suits the song perfect. The text is so ambivalent , I mean "I hate you some, I love you some" in the same sentence. This is no happy love song. This is a song full of issues and underlying problems. Dorothy is on a lonely road, singing this tune. She is, as we all are, vulnerable in matters of the heart, matters of love. Maybe the one she's asking won't go dancing or won't take a chance for a sweet romance. The fear of being rejected shines so clear through in this version. "And the key to set me free" or just to be free gets through as a matter of vital importance. I wanna feel free too, Dorothy. The other that goes right trough me is Eishu singing "Both sides, now" Her english intonation isn't perfect. Even a foreigner like me can hear that, but I fall apart, when I hear the sweetness of her voice and the melancholy of the piano accompanying her. She has this special warmth in her voice, that I cherish wherever I can find. I would never think I could fall for another version of "Both sides, now" I feel that Joni herself has done it so superbly, that there weren't any point covering it all. But Eishu success this difficult challenge, and she does it in a jazzy style. Togehter with Laurie Anderson she and Joni makes my top three BSN-versions. FFM's "Case of you" is good and refreshing just because they are men singing it, and I think I've almost entirely listened to women singing that tune. Frank Hammersland's "Night ride home" is a night ride home. Light and easy, really in a Joni tradition. I've always found him very cute, so I think the version would be even better is he had sung I love the boy/guy/man beside me. But, than that seem quite hard for male artists to do. I don't see that problem female artists facing the same issues, I hear all the time about women singing about women they love, like Alison Krauss in "Let loss be your lesson" She sings "Once I had myself a good woman, but I just dindn't threat her right." Nobody expects her to be a lesbian for that, but a man singing the same, yeah maybe I would believe he was gay too, so there you are... Mama Cass: "I had a king" Chris Laurence quartet "Last Chance lost" and Sandro Dominelli's "Two grey rooms" are also warmly welcomed by me. These are song I seldom listen to and that I really like a lot. If you still haven't wrapped up this gift, I think time is running out, so be quick. And the delight of some of these tracks should weigh up for the agony and torment some of the other tracks might cause in you. Chaka does what an artist should do, and that's adapt the song to their specific style. As for the infamous NRH cover, I find that I'm somewhat addicted to it in that I can't believe that this was made public and her la-da-da's make me laugh louder & louder with each subsequesnt viewing. I wonder if she's in the least bit curious about why the video has had so many views.
