It's their "People Pick." Nice inset photo of Joni & James in 1970 at the BBC concert. A small error saying ". and the true identity of Joni Mitchell's "Cary" (sic) " Oh, please, People!! Being kind of ADD by this point in my life (I blame it all on kids) I somehow ended up starting with Carly, then felt bad like I should start at the beginning. So I went back to Carole. I am a bit put off by how long they're taking to set up the whole scene . Carole and her girlfriend in her bedroom picking her "new" last name out of a phone book and intermingling it with glimpses of the neighborhood, the mores of the times, etc., etc. . slightly excruciating. But I think overall I'll really enjoy it! This makes me all the more suspicious about the whole suicide thang. I am going on a trip this week to my old alma mater and need something to read on the plane. If this book is at Costco, I might pick it up and take it for something fun to read. But whenever I read it, I doubt that I will be able to take it too seriously. From reading the few excerpts that have been available here and there, it seems to have some good insights. But I suspect some of those insights are mere conjecture. And obviously, some of the 'facts' are not quite accurate. I mailed the Alberta Ballet to see if they were considering bringing The Fiddle and the Drum to Europe - and they are. Spring 2008 is a good time. They are investigating possibilities with the Galway Festival and their agent would like to consider Brighton too. Two dates won't make a tour though and the production has a high technical specification .... But if you want to see The Fiddle and the Drum at a theatre near you, this might just be an opportunity.... Any ideas anybody? She flirted with the idea for a second when she announced what the first line of it would be! Her autobio might or might not be a great thing, judging from her interviews. A co-writer/editor would be a good choice, to just interview the hell out of her and make sure it all hangs together. I volunteer. Actually, though, I'd rather she put her energy into a really good box set. And maybe a series of live recordings ala Dylans 'official bootleg' series. I'd voluteer for that, too. Or she could do both-her name in the news, everything first class...sheee-it. It would be a great setup for her next [new] release. I really do hate sloppy research and writing but that means, if I make a mistake of that kind, I have to feel really embarrassed about it. It's probably better to be one of those people who doesn't let a few facts get in the way of a good story. But, as I said, it does make me question the validity of supposed other "facts." I've been mulling over the whole Joni-suicide-attempt scene and I'm having a hard time buying it. Not that Joni couldn't possibly be suicidal. I suppose anyone can. But there was talk about a lot of blood and I don't see her as the type to open a vein. It just doesn't sound like Joni to me. Of course, I have nothing to base that on, other than the feeling that wrist-slashing (or whatever) doesn't sound like the sort of thing Joni would do. That wouldn't be such a far stretch given what she had said about her depression in the 70's. I could understand. But what struck me most about the suicide attempt was the combination of attempts and the violence of it. Why would Joni feel the need to slit her wrists if she had already taken pills? Why do both? Am I wrong or did she do those two things at different times? One is painless (if you don't wake up that is) and the other is a bit horrid and very, very difficult to accomplish I'd imagine. Why would someone do both? And why after all that (assuming it was all around the same time as it seemed in the article...can' t say about the book so I wonder) would Joni (or anyone) slam herself into a wall to bloody herself up? That isn't going to kill you. I can't imagine anyone hurtling themselves into something so hard to kill themselves (unless you're in a car and you drive straight into something). So for you folks who have read the book, did Joni do all these things at once? -M Catherine McKay wrote: But, as I said, it does make me question the validity of supposed other "facts."
