That being said, would you consider Joni to be one of the greatest female vocalists (splitting up female and male since that is how it is done...no intentions here)? Afterall, you can like someone and not think they have the greatest voice or even much of a voice (IE: Bob Dylan). What do you think? I love the variety in Joni's voice. The first song that I REALLY heard by her (I had known Big Yellow Taxi but didn't care for it and still don't) was Free Man In Paris. What first caught my attention was indeed her voice. The first time I heard the song I really loved the voice singing the song. The second time I heard it, I loved the words/melody. The third time, I was frustrated and determind to find out who was singing that song! This really caught me by surprise since generally speaking, female vocalists don't do much for me. Sure, they all have nice voices but they usually don't "strike" me so Joni coming into play really was a pleasant and unexpected surprise. -M - --------------------------------- Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! "Paul McCartney, Annie Lennox and Queen will play London's Hyde Park on June 27 to honor Nelson Mandela on his 90th birthday. " Quelle synchronicity! Someone just sent me this wonderful Mandela quote this morning: "Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We are born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us, it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others." (Pssssst....Joni! Hi Joni!!! You should go, too, and sing Shine for him. C'mon, Joni. You could take an ocean-liner -- you know you love to watch that green water in motion. And they'd probably let you smoke on the deck. Pack your suspenders! I'm sure that Queen Lucy or Jamie or some Jonibody would be happy to pick you up.) "Joan Baez' new CD is being produced by Steve Earle, who also has 3 of his songs on the disc. Expect late summer/early fall release. Says Earle: "It's a fuckin' great record, man"." Ooh la la! Vive l'esprit de Camp Casey. Bring it ON! (Or, in Jonispeak: I call out for it to be released!) I've wondered often if she would ever explore and expand the Latin-Jazz sound, sort of along the lines of Don Juan's Reckless Daughter with Don Alias. I have been lurking a good long time and have heard all you have had to say about so many things. I still love you all - well and some a little more! LOL! Anyway, my lovely girlfriend - Meg, who many met at the Northeast Jonifest year before last, showed me this link to pass on to the list. http://www.rhino.com/rmat/ It is a music contest - open book. She and I know some of you are up to the task and wanted to share this with you. So check it out - win or lose it sounds like fun for music lovers! Still listening to Shine and I do love it! I think it probably will not end up in my top 5-Joni's of all time, but in the next group of 5 so that's pretty darn good considering her catalog of masterpieces. I have my favorites - so far but they have changed a little since the first listen ( Hannah, Night of the Iguana and of course the Grammy award winning instrumental). Been listening to all the political debates here and just wanted to throw my hat in the ring! Being from Chicago IL - I guess you must know who I support for president - or do you? Well let's see I was part of the movement for Obama's election to the Senate, in my part of town and thrilled at his election. On the other hand Hillary grew up just outside Chicago in Park Ridge. Of course I loved Bill - as a President and her as his teammate. Love the excitement that Obama inspires. I am a liberal and proud of it - and I am a feminist and proud of that. So keep guessing. The issue is that we don't let another Republican in the White House for a very long time! I choose ... the one who can best get us out of this economic mess as it is becoming debilitating to our country getting back on track and on its feet. War helps an economy - so the old soldiers used to say - and look how bad things are with one! I also took part, before moving from Chicago, in a huge anti-war demonstration that stopped traffic all over the city. I want out of Iraq now! Keep guessing! Ron Paul! Well no just kidding! Anyway nice to see & hear you all - love and as always .... Peace, Susan (Now reading "Positively 4th Street") - --------------------------------- Never miss a thing.
