Though I think Joni's near shattered voice is probably from smoking, there is a thing called age, too. I believe the combo is probably responsible for the very limited range Our Queen is able to display these last 10 years. I'm also thinking that She is recording in what is probably the most up-to-date-state-of-the-art-digital-lawnmowing-babysitting-reroofing type studio available. Engineering/editing can eliminate a ton of unwanted sounds...so we may want to consider that She is helped out by super-audio-technology Even Billie Holliday/Judy Garland fans must admit that those last recordings can be sad to listen to...The voice is nearly buried under the abuse. Of course, Joni's advantage is that she isn't just a singer...I think her composing/painting/poet skills are what will make her remembered well into the future. Beethoven? Leonardo? Hey, I love both those guys and it seems Joni does, too....well..how could one not? I, personally, can't put Our Lady of Duality in the company of Titans...this doesn't mean she's not a Goddess, Genius for sure, and a damned important one..Anima rising, indeed!! I wish I could say I could go on, but ADD prevents me from going further without repeating myself or becoming too vague. One of my fave Joni With Others song is Blue River with Eric Andersen...shivery. Love, Russ....survived yet another blizzard in Maine....Going to San Diego this week!! Yay!! Oh...HOSL...Shucks-a-mighty! Fabulous and much cheaper than implants! _________________________________________________________________ Helping your favorite cause is as easy as instant messaging. As a huge fan of both, and especially Billie, I'd say Lady In Satin is one of the greatest recordings ever made. And as gorgeous as her voice was in her youth, it could have never portrayed such maturity and wisdom. The same can be said for many great singers, including Rosemary Clooney. Though the beauty that youth had given her freely was gone, the knowing phrasing that life had given her more than made up for it. Jerry ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 2 Mar 2008 16:33:44 -0800 From: Subject: Fave Joni and other artists My very favorite is Joni signing on "Steadfast" on her sometime drummer Brian Blade's album "Perceptual." It is very ethereal and gorgeous and I wish I could hear a whole album with Joni and Brian in this mystic-jazz style. Also faves: With Seal on "If I Could" With JT on "Long Ago and Far Away" With Jimmy Webb on "Simile" from his obscure "Letters" album Kakki, hoping to have some Joni related news later tonight - heehee ;-) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 2 Mar 2008 17:01:54 -0800 From: Subject: Eric and Joni Hey Eric, I think 99% of people here love Joni's artistry and would even find gems to discuss at length if she sang the phone book. I love some of her incarnations more than others but I have always found value and intrigue in every piece she creates, whether music or painting. Regardless of personal preferences and favorite eras, can you just imagine if Joni's voice and style had ALWAYS stayed the same? Ugh! We would hardly be giving her the time of day that we passionately do. Whether one likes one Joni era and maybe not another is besides the point that she is great exactly because she does change and evolve. So don't feel frustrated - her changes are exactly what make her the artistic great that she is to us! It's all good and great ;-) Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 2 Mar 2008 18:57:02 -0800 (PST) From: KEVIN DOHENY Subject: Fave Joni "guest spot" It would have to be "will you love me tomorrow"...I love her hamonies and it's really one of my favorite songs ever by both carole king and the shirelles(who come from the next town over from me and my mom was lucky enough to see them at Passaic High school in the late 50's :) Back to Joan..lol.You really have to listen to it in headphones..From 1:50 on Joni tears it up!! When she sings..."meets the morning sun" uhhh! So beautiful!! She sings actually in the majority of the song(james also) Carole's voice is up front of course but it really is like a trio performance..I had no idea Joni sang with Seal..i am definetly going to check that out..Love Seal..A close second would be her work on David Crosby's brilliant If I could only remember my name..Laughing is one of my favorite songs ever and god, joni sounds so fabulous on it...She goes from a smooth alto harmony to the souring soprano in the end...If my ears don't decieve me "what are there names" contains what could be a fantasy pairing of Joni and grace slick..I know members of the airplane contributed heavily to the album..geez what I wouldn't give to have been at that recording session..Odds are I'd be too baked to remember afterwards..lol.. - --------------------------------- Looking for last minute shopping deals? Seems like many dim years ago since I saw him face to face, so this is an unexpected pleasure: Dear Pattie, I was recently in Chester CT having lunch with a friend of mine and I spotted the following tribute to Joni Mitchell music series being performed in Chester. Though you'd be interested. http://www.myspace.com/smalltownconcertseries ***** It always warms the cockles of my Joni heart and mind when someone hears something about Joni and associates her with me. Quel honneur, n'est-ce pas? Does anyone know these musicians? I'll have to check this out tomorrow. The more Joni fans in the world, the better! MY GOD THE WOMAN IS 64 i don't hear the other non-smoking Joans (Baez & Collins) sound NEARLY SO good Lena Horne likewise sounded better at 70 than she did at 20 the MOJO article deserves far more contemplation: ~When I interviewed her in 2004, she spoke openly for nearly six hours about, among many other things, the reasons for her disenchantment with the business, including 'asinine' critics who charged that smokinh had ruined her voice.~ GEEZ do any of us really realize WHAT A GREAT artist we have in Joni?????? ~MOJO: What about your voice? A lot of critics have complained that smoking caused you to lose your ability to hit the old high notes. Has it?~ WHAT an insulting STUPID question! u folk snobs who expect Joni to regurgitate her early work endlessly really grate on my nerves MY GOD PEOPLE do we even begin to comprehend what a TOTAL GENIUS joni is? light up an additive-free cigarette & plant a tree for our poor little planet ET ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V2007 #477 ********************************* ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:onlyjoni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
