High 6th fl Allen Room in the Time Warner Center's "Jazz at Lincoln Centre" venue. 450-500 seats, some in front of stage with cocktail tables. Behind bandstand a 4-floor high glass wall/window overlooking Central Park & Columbus Circle towards the east. Lights of cars coming around curve, towers on Upper East Side glittering on the Horizon. Absolutely NO street-sounds. Glass panels somehow refracted the moving lights so they appeared ghostlike in the distance. Room itself so skillfully lit that audience appeared to be in candlelight. Beautiful!!!! Music : she spanned her career in certain respects, with a good mix and flow of old and new. But focus on material from Watershed (buy it! - her compositions) and 49th Parallel (Siberry & Cohen). No "Cryin'" (tho I sang it out loud during the 6 block walk home.). God, but her voice is near perfect! Versatile, pure, sustained delivery. great control over tone and volume - totally appropriate at every moment. Pitch and breathing in live performance belying the effort she's put into developing and nurturing her instrument - all appears spontaneous and effortless. Holds a long note without a tremor (unless intended) and limits the vocal pyrotechnics to the moments that beg for them - doesn't 'impose' her voice over the meaning and need of the lyric and melody. And she won the audience over from a respectful attention to adulation by the end. Her choice of material leans more now to the wistful, self-critical tone of love and life not meeting expectations. They guys who played with her - session men of fair renown here - seemed somewhat in awe of her talent. Evidently well rehearsed, but retaining the attentiveness and spontaneity that makes them smile at one another's particularly interesting riff or punctuation. They were thoroughly enjoying themselves, and their voices in perfect harmony, then counterpoint, to kd's. I was entranced. And somehow uplifted as well - thought of my recently deceased Mom throughout, due to the nature of some of the lyrics and the naked emotion she layered subtly over that soaring voice. The night was magical. As soon as the tour was announced I checked the dates and she's not coming anywhere near the Southwest. Hopefully this is just part one of the tour. Luckily I bought the deluxe edition of Watershed which has 4 live bonus tracks on it so at least I can hear a little taste of what you are getting to see real time. It sounds like from the reviews that the 4 live tracks she included are all songs she is performing on this tour. I haven't seen kd live for almost 15 years and was really hoping, but I guess you can't have everything.... The CD alone has been wowing my ears since it's release. Enjoy yourself Jerry! Sky Blue Sky, Wilco ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Feb 2008 01:00:05 -0500 From: David Eoll Subject: RE: Joni and Stills (and Judy) Didn't know about Stills on Blonde In The Bleachers. In fact I'd never really focused on the harmonies in that song. They are something else, though, thanks for pointing them out. I'm only hearing Stephen sing the "Very long"s near the end. The harmonies nearer the beginning of the song sound like Joni's usual style of harmonizing with herself (I call it the Joni quartet). But, I could be wrong. And the two electric guitars (one in each channel) are unmistakably Stills. And once again, I've listened to that album 1000 times and never noticed. Sheesh. Since there appear to be a few Stephen Stills fans on the list, I'd be remiss if I didn't point out his fantastic accompaniments on Judy Collins' album, Who Knows Where The Time Goes. He's all over that album on bass and guitars. The standouts, for me, are Pretty Polly and First Boy I Loved. The latter song, in particular, is just beautiful anyway, and Stills plays wonderful fills throughout on electric. The last verse is a reference to him (Judy and he were an item then), and he plays that part with particular flair. :) Before I get off this sub-topic, I have to let you Stills fans know what happened after Stills finished doing those sessions with Judy. He paid the engineer a few hundred bucks to record some demos for him of some songs he'd been working on. It was April 1968, so Buffalo Springfield was in the process of disintegrating, and CSN had yet to come together. But, three of the demos were of songs that ended up on the first CSN album. About half a dozen others appeared on Stills first few solo albums, including a couple songs from Manassass. This reel of demos gathered dust for nearly 4 decades and recently surfaced and was released as Just Roll Tape. If you're a Stills fan _at_all_, you simply must check it out. Its rough in places, the levels are off, and the guitar's not miked very well, but what the hell do you expect? They're demos. And the man was on fire. Back to Joni and Blue. I knew that J.T. appears on that album, but I was never sure where. Wiki says he's on "California", "All I Want", "A Case of You". That certainly sounds like it could be him, but I'm not nearly as familiar with his playing. My question is, I know he and Joni had a relationship at some point. Is James appearance on Blue before, after, or during that relationship? Anyone know? I'm glad I found this list. I love talking about music with other music lovers almost as much as I love listening to music. Well, I guess "almost" is a bit of a stretch. But, I do like discussing music. I'm glad to be here.
