I will start with the Joni content . . . I saw k.d. lang in concert at the Opera House in Boston Saturday night and, although her performance was great beyond all my expectations, she didn't do either of the Joni songs from "Hymns of the 49th Parallel." She did do Neil Young's "Helpless," Jane Siberry's "The Valley," and Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," which were all incredible. I had half-expected the concert to be all about her new "Watershed" CD, but she performed songs from throughout her 20+ year career. She was funny, chatty, and very likeable -- especially when she told the audience that Boston was her favorite place in the U.S. Even though I was disappointed not to hear "Jericho"or "A Case of You," k.d.'s performance was just spectacular. Great band, too. If you get a chance to see her during this tour, take it! You won't regret it. (Unless you insist on hearing Joni tunes.) From lower case k.d. lang to upper case ANNE SANDSTROM . . . I just finished reading Anne's new book "Trials," about her experiences with recurring cancer a few years ago and I think this book is a must-read, especially for those of us on the list who remember Anne's "trials." Of particular interest to listers may be the Acknowledgements section, in which Anne mentions 14 past and current listers. (You should buy the book just to see if you made the cut!) We have sort of a tradition here on the JMDL of supporting each other's musical efforts by attending each other's performances, buying CDs, etc., so I think it would be great if as many listers as possible could support Anne's literary efforts buy clicking on this link and buying "Trials." It's a great read, whether you know Anne or not! http://stores.lulu.com/store.php?fAcctID=1377612 - --Bob ____________________________________________________________________________________ Looking for last minute shopping deals? Hi Kevin, Thanks for drawing my attention to this on Blonde in the Bleachers. I absolutely love Stephen Still's voice. He is by far my favorite of CSN. Ok, no entire record and they didn't write the song together but correct me if I am mistaken. Wasn't it "You Turn Me On I'm A Radio" where (after Geffen wanted her to write a hit) she had them come in and play on? I think it was that song but don't quote me. My memory is not what it used to be! Anyhow, Joni didn't use anything from that session and said something like, "there were too many chefs in the kitchen." Too many different ideas from too many creative people on how to do it! -Monika P.S. Blonde in the Bleachers is rockin'. What I wouldn't give to turn back time and convince Crosby Stills Nash Young and Joni to get together and write an opus! Imagine that record.. I can't even.. I've always thought that each would contribute a song and collaborate on the rest...Hey if Stevie and Lindsey can write Silver Spring and go your own way during/after a breakup.. I am sure Joan and Graham could kick some major ass together.. - --------------------------------- Looking for last minute shopping deals? Find them fast with Yahoo! With my luck, she has already done her show in Toronto. If not, I hope she waits until I've got my tax refund back so I can afford to buy tickets. I think kd has been blessed with one of the most amazing voices ever. > From lower case k.d. lang to upper case ANNE > SANDSTROM . . . > > > I just finished reading Anne's new book "Trials," > about her experiences with recurring cancer a few > years ago and I think this book is a must-read, > We have sort of a tradition here on the JMDL of > supporting each other's musical efforts by attending > each other's performances, buying CDs, etc., so I > think it would be great if as many listers as > possible could support Anne's literary efforts buy > clicking on this link and buying "Trials." Even though I'm only just finished Chapter 1, I can tell it's going to be worth the read, not just for the subject matter and not just because it's written by Anne S, who is a special person for me in so many ways, but because she is a fine writer as well. The splendid portrait of the irascible folkie on "American Masters" (CPTV, 9 p.m.) titled "Pete Seeger: The Power of Song," it's from Jim Brown, who previously made "We Shall Overcome" and "The Weavers: Wasn't That a Time" traces the history of the man whose father was a pioneering musicologist and gained interest in the string music of the American South. The respect with which Seeger is held is clear from the people who appear to participate in the praise: Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Natalie Maines and Joan Baez among them. *** Check your local listings.
