Walking past Ronnie Scott's club on Frith Steet afterwards I noticed that Tom Scott was playing there later - couldn't go but found this review from last Tuesday's Guardian - >> There was a time when, if you heard a saxophone on the radio or TV, it would likely be Tom Scott. He played with everyone from John Lennon to Joni Mitchell, from Wings to Blondie. Scott turned up on countless soundtracks and albums, and was an early adopter of the Lyricon. His memorable solo on Carole King's Jazzman was resurrected for the Bleeding Gums Murphy episode of The Simpsons. But, despite Scott's place in the rock reference books, he is more of a footnote in jazz. This short residency, with pianist Nat Adderley Jr and a local backline, is his first UK appearance since 1975, when he played at Ronnie's with Victor Feldman, the British-born multi-instrumentalist. Scott's show touches several bases - from standards to jazz-pop - and includes several tunes from the album Cannon Reloaded, his ball-star celebration of Cannonball Adderleyb. For the second half, he is joined by Paulette McWilliams, session singer and fellow Quincy Jones alumnus, and the repertoire turns to soul (such as When the World Turns Blue) and standards (Over the Rainbow). The highlight is a fusion version of Ode to Billie Joe, with a groove as thick and tasty as gravy, a brief tenor solo from Scott and McWilliams's pitch- perfect rendition of the narrative classic. The playing is of a high standard throughout, but the gig is less than the sum of its parts. Scott, who pioneered jazz-rock with the LA Express, no longer dominates the popular jazz continuum, and his versatility can mean the gig lacks focus. The best moments spring from his love of Adderley, with delicious versions of The Chant and Jive Samba (by Nat Adderley Sr). Without copying his hero, Scott plays eloquent tribute to an important, underrated figure in the jazz canon, and re-establishes his own claim to return from the margins. Chelsea Morning, Joni Babies! ("Don't say I didn't warn ya": the following is long and personal and ooby shooby.) Ms. Questions of a Thousand Dreams wrote: " Hey there Patti. I noticed on Facebook that today is your birthday. Try and have a Happy Birthday, even despite recent sadness. Have a good one." Merci, Monika! Yeah, they say it's my birthday. It was indeed a both-sides-now/shadows-and-light kind of day. My first birthday as an orphan -- the first one w/out my Mama, who taught me the deeper meaning, and the second w/out my Papa, whose faith was in people. My heart and mind see-sawed as I tried to put on the day and speak in present tenses. You've gotta keep thinking you can make it through these waves of grief, right? Darn right. It takes cheerful resignation, someone told me. My Michael from Mountains was coaching a damn hockey game so I hopped in the Hejira-christened Space Buggy (Beep, beep, RR! "Me and my buggy beat those meteorites!" -- AATW), (w/ no dreams of flat tires thanks to the JMDL-recommended new Michelins), and took to the highway. The same long and winding road I traveled on to see Neil and Kenny B. on Now the seventh of December was covered with snow And so was the turnpike from Mansfield to Oakdale Lord, the Northeast seemed dreamlike on account of that frosting With ten miles behind me and ten thousand more to go There's a song that they sing when they take to the highway.... Okay, so the songs that I sang were from SHINE (Night of the Iguana puts me in a good, snappy mood...and you know there may be more jewels from that chef-d'oeuvre, n'est-ce pas, Eric?) for a while, and then I popped in the third disc of CSNY's "Freedom of Speech 06" concert at Mohegan Sun (Indian land again) that Angel Ashara gifted me with (merci encore une fois, Ashara!). Ohio, Chicago, etc. Pump it UP! I love this one because I was THERE, and re-hearing those whoops and screams and whistles -- not to mention the MUSIC and the voices of those rock and roll choir boys -- makes me feel alive, alive. (Thanks for the Neil article, Musik Meister! Maybe the music can't change the world, but WE still can. Ya gotta believe.) Oops....almost missed the exit again (DUI-CSNY, rockin' in the free world on the free freeway....LOL!). Then, pulling into the paved paradise, I heard the beginning of the encore w/ David yelling out: "You want MORE?" and then Neil yelling out: "This one is for all of you old hippies out there!" and then sweet Willy chiming in: "And you *young* ones, too!" as they went on to perform -- you guessed it -- Woodstock. Ahhh, that Joni! Walked into Wollman's (Cromwell) Rink and watched my boy WHO IS NOT IN IRAQ (Praise the Lord!) coach these little cutie children, who have only moved six times round the seasons. Then -- uh oh! I hear a man's voice: "Happy birthday, Patti!" and I turn and it's a man with a very dark cloud above him. Yikes. My ex-husband. Poor guy. He doesn't even know how to dig down deep, yet he's still heavy company. He starts saying: "I heard you and Michael went to see Obama." Me (bright as a neon light): "Oh, yes. He was *wonderful*. So inspiring and full of hope and...." Mr. Dark Cloud then went on to list all the reasons why he doesn't like him (nothing's any good) and why he will never be President and yada yada yada..." No good reception for him so I tuned him out. Who needs the static? I don't want my birthday going dismal. NOW HERE IS THE JONI CONTENT: After the damn hockey game he redeemed himself. He put up/went out to the parking lot and returned w/ a big, flat wrapped package. I set it down to open it and as I peeled back the paper I started squealing: "Wow. Wow! WOW! W O W ! ! ! Oh my God! It's Joni! Joni art! It's Neil Young!" (Michael and his g/f are beaming at this joyful scene, as the reunion of these two polar-opposite spirits -- his parents, not Joni and Neil, ha ha -- always has the potential for undoing all the joy that could be.) Here's what it was: http://jonimitchell.com/painter/view.cfm?id=7&recs=4 (Thanks for maintaining this section of the site, Jamie Zoob. It's awesome. And thanks again to Les and you know...) Yeah, does anyone have more information on this one? Of course, it's not the original. But it's good enough for me (and my Bobby McGee). The color on his shoulder in this reproduction is red, not yellow. Mr. Dark Cloud say it looks like a gunshot wound with blood spewing out (just more bang bang ketchup color to him); Little Miss Sunshine here thinks it looks like "sun on his shoulder." (My dreams with the seagulls fly.....) Any thoughts on this, Monika? Then Michael and Candace (Candy Girl) and I went out to the Space Buggy where Candy Girl gave me a gift bag and made me PROMISE to tell her if I don't like it. "Okay", I promise, as I reach in the bag. More squealing and sixty more seconds of wonder and delight! "Across the Universe DVD! OMG! I *love* this movie!" as I blathered on about it. "You guys really have to see this. Take it home with you!" It really is great movie and sticks to all your senses. Go ask Jahida, I think she knows. (I know she knows.) I think the only Oscar it is nominated for is "best costumes" or something, which is kinda weird because the actresses are all wearing my everyday clothes....LOL! Then we're off to my first IKEA experience. I'll spare you the five hours of that, but I do need to share that I was thinking a lot there of our dear Scandinavian friends, so hello to Bene and Marion and Oddmund and where in the world is Karen Marie? Honestly, though, the best part of this day was the gift of M and C's extra time. My sweet darlings. During the Night Ride Home I put on the you-turn-me-I'm-a-radio to hear a wonderful tribute to Carole King who turned 66 yesterday. I was re-amazed at her talent and prolific productivity. She wrote Locomotion, for her babysitter? And so many others.... JT came on (tears and fears and feeling proud at "people can be so cold, they'll hurt you and desert you..."), and Aretha, and it was cool laughing and crying to all of those wonderful songs of yesteryear, yesterday. Others born yesterday are Alice Walker (64) and Mia Farrow (63). (Hi Joni Mia!) And one last bit of February 9th trivia is that this is the day the Beatles (Meet the Beatles!) first appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show, in 1964. She Loves You, yeah, yeah, yeah -- my 10th birthday, and so it all began. Okay, somebody put too many quarters in this Wurlitzer this morning, so I'd better whirr it down and go watch CBS Sunday Morning with Jerry. (Brown-Eyed Girls are trumping Judy Blue Eyes?) Thanks for coming to my party if you made it this far. I hope I made you feel welcomed-in -- my only channeled aspiration. Love & Peace to all, Patti P., who sent you only the kisses of the day and spared you the tears, which were many P.S. to CoT: Thanks for the message on my Super Wall. Some of you may already know this, but it was a pleasant surprise to see Joni win in the Pop Instrumental Performance beating Beatie Boys, Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals and two others. Very nice. To think that it was only last week that I truly listened to Joni's "Shine" and found myself captivated by "One Week Last Summer". In other Joni-related news: Herbie Hancock's "River: The Joni Letters" won in the Contemporary Jazz Album. In some sense I could imagine this as the only award his album will get tonight (almost like giving the screenplay award to a film that will not get the Best Picture Oscar), but I hope I'm wrong. Chaka Khan's "Funk This" also won in the Best r&b album. I don't have this album yet but I will get this soon. Duly noted: I noticed that the Grammy was given to artists who passed away in the last calendar year: Michael Brecker, Gerald Levert and Lorraine Hunt-Lieberson (I think LHL passed away in early 2006). Interesting wins: Patti Austin's under-appreciated "Avant Gershwin" album winning the Best Jazz Vocal Performance over excellent albums from Kurt Elling (Nightmoves) and Dee Dee Bridgewater (Red Earth: A Malian Journey). I like Patti's album a lot and it is great to see her bounce back and reinvent herself. Alejandro Sanz's "El Tren de los Momentos" beating Luis Miguel's "Navidades" album for the Latin pop category. This is probably a niche category but I noticed that most winners in this category also got nominated in much high profile categories, but I like Sanz's win not because I think he sings better than Luis Miguel, but his quirly Latin pop should be experienced even if your first language is not Spanish or Portuguese. Steve Earle's winning over great musicians like Mary Chapin Carpenter, Tom Waits, Patty Griffin and Ry Cooder in the Contemporary Folk/Americana category. I thought TW's "Orphans" is one of the best 3-album records of 2007, so that may mean I have to check out Steve Earle's award-winning album and see if I agree. It had better be excellent and perfect! And as much as I love all the nominees and their work but I can think of two or three other albums on top of my head from relatively unheralded musicians who should at least got nominations from this Americana-whatever-scope-it-really-covers genre: I am looking at Over The Rhine, Hem and Innocence Mission. Angelique Kidjo's "Djin Djin" album trumping the incandsescence of Gilberto Gil's "Luminoso Gil", and a solid effort from Canadian Loreena McKennitt's "An Ancient Muse" and even Bebel Gilberto's refreshing "Momento". I like Angelique's voice a lot and I am glad for her win although I was surprised that the Portuguese-language albums of Gilbero Gil, Bebel Gilbero, and Ceu could not topple the pan-African sweep of Kidjo's album. Hmmmm. Barack Obama's win for the Spoken Word Category. I am not a fan of spoken word audio but I am wondering how this category gets rated/evaluated/gauged of its merits. Is Obama's win another sign of his gaining momentum over Hillary? Maybe not as I am sure the Grammy is purely non-political. Haha! Hope this win translates to a bigger win late this year. A song from "Dreamgirls" beating the still beauty of Glen Hansard and Market Irglova's "Falling Slowly" in the Best Song written for a Motion Picture category. Not sure I will agree with the decision, but . . . And finally, an opera sung in English won as best opera recording. This is thrilling! I thought the voters in this category are music purists who insist on period instruments and of idiomatic singing, but it is a nice change of pace. Plus, I really dig Humperdinck's "Hansel und Gretel" as an opera. A related story: once there was an event in campus where all units of the university get to exhibit things about themselves. The Music Department staged a set for "Hansel und Gretel" as their exhibit complete with a piped in music and two petite sopranos and a garish-looking Witch. So people wander along and investigate their exhibit. As I was talking to the mewzzo who was dressed as a Witch, she opened her mouth to sing this big killer aria that terrified not only me but other onlookers. Turned out, while they were standing there with the piped in music, a mini opera is actually happening and she was singing in character when she sang it. Talk about interactive opera where you can come to them and talk while they are not singing not knowing that while they may engage with the conversations, their inner ears are attuned to what's going in musically and sing their parts on cue. Wonder what would have happened had I chanced upon a Brunnhilde and she'll "Hojo-to-jo" to me in that piercing B. Haha! Anyway, sorry fot this long detour. Her album "Shine" was a long-awaited return to recording after she famously swore off the music industry, declaring it corrupt. [...] None of the Canadian winners were at the afternoon ceremony to accept their awards, but Mitchell received additional kudos from friend Herbie Hancock, who took best contemporary jazz album with his tribute disc, "River: The Joni Letters." "First of all I want to thank Joni Mitchell, with her incredible words and music," Hancock said in his acceptance speech before turning to a list that started with his mother and father, and included participating vocalist Leonard Cohen. Congratulations to Joni on her sixth Grammy! And Herbie!! This was the best Grammy show I can remember. Virtually, every win in each category was the most well-deserved. I was in awe all night. It's like the music angels and the stars finally aligned perfectly. After Joni telling the biz off all these years it seems like someone(s) may finally be listening! ;-) Geez, and Tina Turner may well become a living ad for the benefits of Buddhism! The lady is 69 years old! How can she look and dance like that? Loved the surprises like Kid Rock and Keely Smith in a jazz duet and especially Herbie rhapsodizing in blue. Amy Winehouse was astounding. Wow, real music lives and shined just brilliantly tonight.
