It's been 12 years for me since I lost my mother and she is never out of my head. The special ones never leave but, we honour them with our lives. She shaped who I am and the lessons will be passed on. That is her legacy. Joni gives you comfort and ways of dealing with things. There are worse ways to deal with grief than listening to wisdom and sharing with friends. Your grief is shared and, hopefully, somehow, lessened. Vive le Patti Parlette (movie star). Jerry PS Classics, the label dedicated to the heritage of American popular song, will record Maureen McGovern's newest concert act, A Long and Winding Road. As previously announced, McGovern will present Winding Road for New York audiences Feb. 13-16 and Feb. 21-23 at the Metropolitan Room. McGovern will head into the recording studio over the Feb. 1 weekend and will continue laying down tracks for the next two weeks. Tommy Krasker, the co-founder of PS Classics, expects a spring release for the single CD. A Long and Winding Road features an eclectic mix of tunes from such celebrated sixties singer-songwriters as Joni Mitchell, Jimmy Webb, Paul Simon, Carole King, James Taylor, Randy Newman, Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Paul McCartney and Laura Nyro. Song titles include "The Circle Game," "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?," "The Moon's a Harsh Mistress" and "Imagine," among others. In a statement Krasker said, "We committed to recording A Long and Winding Road after seeing a half-hour rehearsal in December. The mating of performer and material is so perfect, and Maureen's approach to the songs is so compelling and powerful - we knew it had to be preserved on disc. Jeff Harris, Maureen's longtime music director, will be enlarging the instrumental forces slightly for the studio, but the repertoire will pretty much mirror the show that Maureen is performing at the Metropolitan Room." About her new show, McGovern recently stated, "For the longest time, people have been asking me to do a concert featuring so-called 'Baby Boomer' songs. At this time in my life, looking back, what interested me most were those introspective songs that influenced and inspired my own development as a person and an artist before 'The Morning After.' I started out as a folk singer in the late '60s, so it was highly nostalgic for me to go back and explore this particular section of my musical influences. I fell in love all over again with the early works of Jimmy Webb, Carole King, Bob Dylan, Randy Newman and other groundbreaking singer-songwriters from my youth. Their songs, as The New York Times has called them, have become 'the second half of the Great American Songbook.' They're classic, timeless and evoke all kinds of memories." ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Feb 2008 08:44:00 -0800 (PST) From: Monika Bogdanowicz Subject: Joni's art and the link between musicians and art http://www.linesandcolors.com/2008/01/09/joni-mitchell/ -Monika - --------------------------------- Never miss a thing. The original soundtrack reflected the film as it was released and was updated to include Joni's set as well as her vocals on their "Acadian Driftwood", one of my favorite songs of theirs. As for Joni's soprano singing - I think the best display of her abilities is her singing on Miles of Ailes. I bought that cd recently, had never heard it before, and was just stunned! It's remarkable, especially in the first half. I have never before or after heard her hit the high notes on any other album with such magnificence. At the same time, I also bought Travelogue which is a completely different work. I wonder what somebody who had no knowledge of Joni's music would say if they heard these two albums after each other. Would they even believe it's the same person? Not that I don't like Travelogue, I do actually. Hello Joni-people and especially Patti, Patti you wrote so beautifully, even injecting humor, about the events that happened just before the passing of your mother. I feel I "know" her through you.....you movie star!!!!! Life deals a wicked deck too often. The death of a parent, I find, is especially profound. Our parents are our link from who knows where to life...and then our parents begin the process of teaching, sharing, loving.....each in their own so special way. Grief is something like the ocean waves....some are gorgeous, evoking powerful memories, while others are too powerful and knock us over in the sand. Look for the gentle waves of forgiveness, kindness, gentleness, acceptance and ever-lasting love. For me, Joni is a guide, permitting me to explore my inner-feelings and thoughts on a more realistic level cushioned with her artistry...her gentleness....."Don't say I didn't warn ya"....and Joni represents the passing of stages and sometimes phases in our lives...at least she does for me. Thank you so much for sharing "Axilar Moonrise". Not one of my favorites of Joni's brilliant art, but thought provoking...and her comments were so perfectly descriptive. To those of you who I write off-list...I am sorry for my lack of correspondence....doesn't mean you aren't in my thoughts...my heart...there have been so many times I've sat down to write to Marion and I get so frustrated with the too many interruptions!!!! My message is that so many of you have become such a special part of each day. I really think about you...things and thoughts that you share....the gentle joking and the extraordinary caring. To all, ride this week on the pillow of trust and sharing and love...the trip will be safer. I do like that rendition of Shadows and Light as well. It's quite a contrast those to the hymn like one on the album. I don't know why that was chosen to be left off but they had to edit everything down for the film and really focus more on the Band. If it were up to me, I'd have Joni's entire set in the film! But...that....is...only me...and wouldn't be much about the Band, would it? -M anon anon wrote: Does anyone know why "shadows and light" wasn't included in the movie and soundtrack of "The last Waltz"?
