Michael Moriarty of Law and Order (and several acting triumphs prior to that) is almost surely the writer of the article you refer to. I met him first at the Village Gate in the early '70s, when I played piano during intermissions between the jazz sets and also for the Monday open mic nights. He played piano (greatly inspired by Bill Evans, as I was) and sang really cool songs he had written, as well as standards. By 1979, he had done this act in a few clubs but decided he wanted to try standing up to sing, with someone else on piano. Whatever the reason, he offered me that job. Our musical sensibilities turned out to be remarkably congruent and gave me the first hint that my best path was as a singer's accompanist, rather than as a free-lance bebop pianist, at which I had been competing very poorly in NY for about eight years. In '82, I was working on my second self-produced LP and planned to record a song Moriarty and I had done at the Cookery, "You'll Never Walk Alone," from CAROUSEL. It had been Michael's idea to work on it originally and I think it was my inspiration to do it as a gospel-flavored, 3/4-time jazz piece. He was playing a little harmonica in those days and I used him on that one track along with vibes, trumpet and rhythm section. The unexpected choice and excellent playing by the other musicians caused this track to get a tiny bit of attention and helped the album, THE HIGHEST STANDARDS, get a few favorable reviews. I think that project is the reason Michael's name comes up when someone searches "David Lahm." As I reported when this thread first arrived at JMDL, Moriarty has his own blog, MMUUUHP. He has lived near Vancouver, BC for close to ten years now. DAVID LAHM **************Start the year off right. It was during the time Joan Baez was traveling around the country signing her book, "A Voice To Sing With". It just happened to be on July 4TH and I was terribly worried that there would not be a showing because of the holiday and because Joan wasn't as popular as she had been. I arrived in Chestnut Hill, PA. at a book store called "Encore". There was a line a mile long!!! Imagine my surprise! Well, I thought that I wanted to have some type of direct contact with Joan so I stood on the curb, near the book store. I knew she would be in a conservative type of car...and she was. All of the sudden, I saw a man get out of the driver's seat and open the back right side door...and there was Joan Baez...my second "idol"...Joni being the first. I said, "Oh, Ms. Baez, welcome to "Encore". We're so pleased to have you here." And Joan thanked me and shook my hand. All of the sudden three people were running out of the book store and began to greet Ms. Baez. She looked me directly in the eye and said, "You're good!!!" Of course she knew what I had done. Then I took my humble place at the end of this long line of people, all of whom would have probably been at Woodstock if they had the chance. When I had my turn at having my book signed, Joan Baez was nothing at all like I thought she would be. She had tons of make-up on and hardly glanced up as she said thank you for purchasing her book. I was so sad. This was NOT the Joan Baez I had imagined and had tucked away as a special friend in my mind. I now have similar fears as to what might happen if I ever met Joni. I am sure Joni has a public and private persona. And, I wonder if we as a whole, imagine Joni to be what she is in her every day life. Does anyone feel the same way? I'd say in his prime, Nash was the best looking one, in my opinion. He had very pretty eyes, was very thin.....and to me the deal breaker would have been, he was British. You've got to love that English accent. To me, Stills could have only been considered good looking from '67-72 (and only at times). I think the drugs started to catch up with him after that. I always thought Joni could do better than Crosby when talking about looks. Then again I remember a while ago making a similar comment on the list and discovering there were some who thought Crosby was indeed cute back in his day. That was surprising to me even though I know he dated and slept with a lot of women. I just figured it was cause he was a famous musician! And of course, yes there was Judy Collins, and well sometimes you click and sometimes you don't. -Monika KEVIN DOHENY wrote: There is some great Crosby stuff on You Tube..In case anyone haven't already dug through there..I've always been a fan of CSN(y) and I know Joni had a relationship with both Crosby and Nash, I know a more intense one with Graham..What I am curious about is why not Stills??
