I love reading his bio - - influenced by the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Clapton, Led Zep and Jimi back in the day and went on to play in Miles Davis' band. Sweet. Thanks so much for sending it around. Reminded me of the one time I saw Paul Butterfield with a reconstituted band at a divey place with great acoustics just a few months before he passed away. I remember being so excited to have the chance to finally see and hear him live and then being so shocked when he was suddenly gone. Oh, but how that music lives on. Sherelle - please do try to come out and go with me to see Robben!! It is interesting that his upcoming shows at Catalina are not listed on his official site - of course, that makes me go "hmmmm" and wonder what surprise big cats might show up ;-) I will fall off my chair if Larry Carlton sits in there. I'm almost falling off my chair now just thinking about it! Maybe you can chat with your friendly connections so we know the best night to show - teeheehee. And Impossible Dreamer was the very first Joni's 1980's song that i got. And I llllove the sound. Why? I guess this is just a personal taste. I like songs that sound like Madonna's Live To Tell or Berlin's Take My Breath Away. And Impossible Dreamer really fits the category. I love everything about the song, the sound, the lyric, the way how Joni sang the song, et al. My second song from DED was Lucky Girl. I love it too. Then an image appeared in my mind : I know im gonna love the whole songs from the album. But I was wrong. There is 1 song that i just can never really get into: Smokin Empty Try Another. But thats fine, 9 out of 10 ten is good. Conclusion: I love the album just because of personal taste. Being born in 1980s (1987), i am always curious about the 80s even though i know the 80s seemed to be trying too hard to be cool. (And that's not cool) Happy weekend. Rian PS. She is compelled, certainly but I don't feel enthusiasm. Perhaps because she sees it coming from a dark place? I don't know. I do think she's enjoying being in the game, and in better control of the terms. I fear that if the complaints are what she truly offers the press and are not editorial, that she will miss Myrtle all the more as having been one of very few people who could say, "Joni, get over yourself." We all need someone who knows us that well, and keeps us grounded. I've long thought that in some way, as individuals we're not complete until we're orphaned. For good or for bad. They expect it from her and they probably ask the same questions over and over again. I am not excusing Joni, she should find a way to put an end to this. It's boring to read, really, since we have heard it all before. Well, not the story about her difficulties with Janis Joplin maybe (Joan Baez we already knew about) but her other complaints. CC, you said that you think we are not complete as individuals until we are orphaned. I think you do have a point there but some of us get orphaned long before they can handle being complete individuals. Of course, in Joni's case, she was lucky (or unlucky, depending on how you look at it. She seemed to struggle for if not individuality then integrity in her relationship with her mother longer than most of us. I am of course thinking of "Happiness is the best face lift"). I have a gig at Rockwood Music Hall this coming Tuesday, 1/22 at 7pm. I'll be joined by elizabeth!, Allison Tartalia (both alums of the Night in the City Joni tribute), Michael Leonhart (Steely Dan, Lenny Kravitz, Vinicius Cantuaria, Jamie Leonhart), and, though this isn't totally confirmed yet, Chris St. Hilaire and Kiyoshi Matsuyama (rhythm section of NYC band The London Souls) will be joining me for a mystery Beatles song. In other possibly exciting news, my first full-length CD will FINALLY be finished soon, in time for JoniFest. In fact, JoniFest will in effect be my pre-release CD release party, if that's OK with all of you. ;-) The CD is called "Leaning Towards The Light", and it's produced by the brilliant, aforementioned Michael Leonhart. I've got some rough mixes up on my various websites (addresses in signature line), if ya'll are interested. It's been a true joy and privilege to work with Michael -- I am so happy with the results, which are more pop- and rock-oriented than I had imagined they would be, but I'm thrilled with the results. Thank you for posting these Bob. I have never heard these versions before. I have always had a soft spot for the songs on DED, and these softer, stripped down versions really help hear the true core of this music that turned out so differently in the final versions. I love the passion and fire of DED, and have always thought that the cover art is some of Joni's most evocative. I first heard this album in the late 80's, when I was in high school. The sounds were not too jarring to me, because it sounded a lot like other things I was listening to at the time. It seemed strangely different from WTRF, which I also had and knew that it was the release prior to DED. I like all of the work in Joni's 80's period. A lot of is has to do with the of my life I guess, my mother used to play WTRF in the car when I was in elementary school, and DED and CMIARS also became favorites of mine. I thought that the Geffen box was a fitting tribute to this somewhat unappreciated Joni period. I hope that it turned some people on to these great records. I also loved the arrogance! "You didn't buy 'em the first time, so here they are again in one box!" I love it. I lurk a lot and post a little, but am glad to be in the company of these diverse Joni fans...
