It was a bit of a challenge because when they made the announcement their website crashed with all of the hits, but I kept checking back and 2-3 days later all was well and I snagged the cover. I was delighted that they chose BITB as it is an oft-ignored song from an oft-ignored album. They do a great job with it, but I'm predicting that most jmdler's will not like it. I myself bristled a little bit the first time I heard it but by the next listen I thought it was great. LOL. Kate (PS I'm an obama girl) >The generation of today is very interested in what went on in the 60's and 70's. It is a good time to be a grown up hippie. Their revolutionary synthesis of new sounds with genuine song writing genius has not been replicated since (except by Joni of course). Steely Dan (Fagen)'s career has followed a very similar arc to Joni's (prolific, more than one album per year through the 70s, to the opposite extreme of maybe an album every 4 years). And they both continue to record. And Fagen continues to be fantastic (in my opinion). Joni too. ~Dan On 1/6/08, Mark-Leon Thorne wrote: > > >"Crazy Cries of Love": "Everyone was at the wing-ding" > "New Frontier" (Donald Fagen, the Nightfly): "Yes, we're gonna have a > wing-ding" > > Oddly, Don Freed wrote the words to "Crazy Cries of Love".< > > This is great. Time to take down the reindeer, but we will still be singing songs of Joni joy and peace in 2008. In my Sunday paper was a Joni mention. Don't you just love it? She's here, there, and everywhere these days. Here are snippets from the article: "Dead Rock Stars Resurrected By JOHN ROGERS | Associated Press January 6, 2008 Deborah Chesher was culling through her old boxes of negatives one day when a random thought crossed the photographer's mind about how young and alive all of the guitar gods of her youth had been. It was quickly followed by the realization that many of those rockers were also dead, and most had died young. She has now brought those synaptic occurrences into focus in the coffeetable book "Everybody I Shot Is Dead," (Chesher Cat, $60). The 208-page volume, with photos in black-and-white and color, celebrates the joyous, often unguarded, moments of some of rock music's biggest stars... As much a fan as a photographer when she started, the native Canadian arrived in Los Angeles in the mid-1970s with a 35-mm camera and a portfolio of touring rock acts she had photographed as they passed through Vancouver. She was soon working at all the local music haunts, shooting musicians for albums, concert posters and publicity photos... "Maybe I'll do an 'Everybody I Shot Is Alive' book next," jokes the photographer, an exuberant woman who looks much the same as she did in photos from the 1970s, dressed casually in jeans, black sneakers and a black-and-white pullover shirt. The fellow survivors she photographed include Van Morrison, Steve Miller, Joni Mitchell, Ron Wood, Tom Waits and all the members of the Eagles, and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young..." ***** Thank God Joni is alive and alive, and not in this new book! Maybe Joni's tagging him as a joker is why he got the part! Joni, all-powerful and ever-living..... ; ) Now who is stone-cold Grace behind her fan? Can't be Slick, can it? Joni is not usually that obvious. And poor Eddie... I wonder who these two are compilations of. There's a photo of Jack and Joni in "Hotel California" by Barney Hoskyns. He's sitting in a outdoor cafe (or cabaret) while Joni sits on a curb, barefootin' and smoking, I think. I can't check because I lent the book to a new friend who, btw, wrote back: "Thanks so much for loaning me _Hotel California_. I never realized Joni was such a force in music. And even though the music was a little before my time, it brought back a lot of good memories about living in CA and going to see bands at the Troubadour and the Roxy and driving around Laurel Canyon. Oh, and I also just read Steve Martins memoir _Born Standing Up_ and since there werent any comedy clubs in the late 60s and early 70s, he used to be the opening act for a lot of these bands he even ended up briefly dating Linda Rondstadt." Always good to hear Joni on the radio - especially when it's something off the beaten path. **** I listened to WMNR (from my old hometown) a few nights ago at the urging of a friend, who told me that Joni was going to be a "featured performer". They played the new BYT and Shine. The DJ was totally enraptured with Joni and called her the "crown princess of singer-songwriters" and said something like "when the dust settles she will go down as one of the most fabulous artists" of our generation and "her songs say a lot, wow." He also mentioned her 50 or so guitar tunings. "One Week Last Summer". Quelle coincidence you mention that one. I always have a Joni song in my head when I wake up (I kid you not) and last week I woke up with that one. And more on that song: traveling in some vehicle (mine, so I am the radio boss!) Christmas Eve with my son and his new bride, I finally had him captured on my CD carousel of Joni time, and played a lot of Shine (after his protestations). I bragged that Joni is nominated for a Grammy with that one -- her first-ever instrumental, and here she gets a Grammy because she is a genius/goddess, etc. -- and Chris, ever the Joni-tease says: "Well, there's not much competition in that category, is there?" When I played Shine, he said: "What is this? It sounds like one of those "Buy a mood" CDs". Ha ha....that reminds me of a comment made by a co-worker when I played it for her the first time. She said: "Wow. That sounds like when Jim and I go to the spa...." Okay, I'd better stop. When I get this crazy feeling I know I'm in trouble again. This is exactly why I am on "evil digest". Getting Joni emails all day would suck me back this way again and again and I'd never get anything else done. Bonne annee!
