What really shocks me is that Joni has not produced a top ten hit since Help Me. THAT WAS 30 YEARS AGO PEOPLE!!! I haven't been able to listen to anything but public radio for many years now completely sick of the reguigitated golden oldies puked by mainstream stations. Big Yellow Taxi 2007 deserves FAR more airplay nowadays. So does Night Of The Iguana which I swear is Joni's greatest work since Slouching Toward Bethlehem. Perhaps 100 years from now our Joan's sheer genius will be fully appreciated by the few survivors of this massive mess we're in. Our woman of heart & mind can do no wrong in my book & everything she has ever done outshines artists going back many centuries. Sorry for being such an absolute Joniphile but how can I stop??? BTW I cringe at the thought of a Pope Joni! Yuck!!! I see her more like a Joni the Baptist, pushing our heads deep into the waters of newness. Okay it is Christmas day according to the Catholics and Protestants. So I must sincerely wish all life on Earth PEACE. & thank everyone for everything! 2 a better 2008!!! Joni Mitchell, Canadian, poetic singer/ songwriter sings 'The Wizard of Is'. !967 Leonard Cohen ,Canadian, poetic singer /songwriter cuts his first album with a song called 'Suzanne'. These songs are so remarkably alike in structure. In parts it sounded like the same song with different lyrics. What say you clever people?" I posted this (unmistakable, to me) same observation a few years ago. I think I looked up the dates, and Suzanne seems to have come first clearly, as I recall. I think I recall speculating that may be why Joni decided not to record it, but who knows. If so, good decision by her. Hey - I'm invoking the one month rule ! Essentials: (pick 3) - I have to agree with Bob Muller on these 1. Hejira 2. Blue 3. Court & Spark Recommended: (pick 3) - Are you kidding ? Only three ? OK, I'll agree with Muller again. 1. For The Roses 2. The Hissing of Summer Lawns 3. Turbulent Indigo Be Careful: (pick 3) - I consider this an extension of the "recommended" group, with attitude 1. Travelogue (a masterful collection of great songs in an orchestral setting) 2. Don Juan's Reckless Daughter (into orbit - hold on to your hat) 3. Mingus (if you think Joni's a folk singer...........) Go ahead and skip: (pick 3) 1. Dog Eat Dog 2. Taming the Tiger 3. Chalk Mark In A Rainstorm Live: (pick 1) - Only one ? 1. Shadows and Light (what a band - get the DVD, too). To start with: (pick 1, some compilation) 1. Miles of Aisles (Ha! - I snuck it in) Bobsart PS - The original studio recordings that did not make the above list at all include STAS, Clouds, LOTC, WTRF, NRH and Shine. I would recommend them all. That brings the recommended (but not 'essential') list up to 12, which is more like it to me ;-) Of her compilations, I love Songs of a Prairie Girl, and Hits is a good second choice for "To Start With". **************************************See AOL's top rated recipes (http://food.aol.com/top-rated-recipes?NCID=aoltop00030000000004) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Dec 2007 11:26:58 -0800 (PST) From: Peep Richman Subject: Re: Merry, Merry Christmas To All Hello to all the very special Joni People!!! And MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!! I hope that all of you are enjoying this day and this holiday season....that's a huge wish, huh?...what with all the problems that we share on the Digest. Yet, it's still my hope that each person is enjoying something special today...and ALL DAYS!!!! My grandmother died one year ago today. Of course, I miss her very much but I cherish all my memories. One of the last things she said to me was "I always loved you, I love you now, I'll love you always"...such precious words and a magnificent feeling that I have inside. I'm thinking of Joni right this second...actually a lot today, and I'm so full of wonder about what she could be doing...who is with her....I want to tell Joni I thank her for yet another year, marked so very special with the gift of "SHINE"!!!!! I'm thinking about so many people in our Digest family....certainly wishing that all is going well this Christmas Day. We are a very unique and a wonderfully feeling group of international friends. I never go one day without giving thanks for discovering the Digest and making so many dear friends. Be SAFE, and know happiness, contentment; hold close to your heart precious memories; I pledge to give in so many ways and am comforted knowing that I have so few needs. Be happy and stay far from dark ladders.....be healthy and yearn for the wisdom to help you through the tough times...yearn for the wisdom to help you appreciate every small gift life brings to us...I know we all yearn for world peace. Here's one interview where she says it: http://jonimitchell.com/Library/view.cfm?id=1058 There are probably others too - as we know, Joni has a cache of catch-phrases that she pulls out to answer the homogeneous questions asked of her. I think that whether you're talking about film, art, music, painting, food, whatever - there's typically a big chasm between what is POPULAR and what is EXCELLENT. It doesn't bother me a bit that Joni doesn't appeal to the masses like High School Musical, Josh Groban, McDonalds, or whatever watered-down generic product is peddled to the lowest common denominator. Further to that, it makes US a special group in that we have the ability to recognize those traits in her and her work. I've missed out on things like that, since I so rarely watch MTV, VH1, etc. Sigh ... However, I like Dancin' Clown. It DOES have a memorable melody, for me anyway -- or maybe it's just the chorus that I find memorable (and now, darn it again, it's stuck in my head for the night). Of course, I like Shiny Toys too. I always have. I think it's great that Joni sometimes apparently just feels like writing/playing/singing a fun song. All of Joni's songs don't have to be "meaningful," do they? That said, I agree that most of CMIARS is "below par" as most of us define that. It's one of my least favorite Joni albums, along with TTT which I still cannot really get into. I'm still and always will be a DED-head, though. No, DED isn't a(n) Hejira or an FTR or a Blue or a C&S, but I dig it just the same and I still play it a lot. Part of that is probably based upon the fact that I was stationed in Germany when it came out and a lot of it resonated with me, but another part of it is that I simply LIKE it. Still without Shine here ... I'll get it one of these days ...
