It was good to see her in such a confident, happy mood! And I think she handled the question about her signing on for Starbuck bravely! She told the maybe not so pretty truth - they gave her a good deal, that's why she signed. I mean, she could have tried to find some other explanation, she could have lied about how she hadn't compromised with her beliefs and convictions - but she didn't. You've got to admire her honesty. He doesn't even mention the title track to Hejira which I think is an amazing song as well. Whether you like Amelia, C&S, Shine or whatever, I don't get it when people overly diss other works by Joni, just to make a particular work seem that much better." Victor (who performed Amelia at the first Jonifest I attended, doing a fine job with a deceptively difficult song to cover well) is generally loath to dwell too often on comparisons, whereas I fall into that trap too often, I concede. Here, I suspect our perspectives converge inadvertantly. Joni's work was so consistently excellent for such a long string of albums. It is that consistency that blows my find. LOTC, Blue, FTR, C&S, THOSL, Hejira, DJRD. Nary a mediocre song, much less anything less than an outstanding album, each album stretching her artistic limits beyond the reach - and sometimes realm - of its predecessor. And succeeding each time. To get a sense of that stretching, play LOTC and then DJRD in one sitting :-) (The touch on the studio Amelia that sends me is the slide guitar introduced later in the piece). The repetition the Kenny comments on is what sets the mood - it is the artistic incarnation of the driving through the burning desert. In that song, as in (for me) all of her greatest individual works, the common link is the truly uncommon connection between the lyrics and the music. Just not that uncommon for Joni. I think it's as close to a favorite as I have. So close that 16 years ago I named my daughter Amelia in an attempt to claim the muse. I like to think she got some. We never told her what prompted the selection of the name, until she figured it out when we were in the car listening while driving. She remarked how totally hopeless and embarassing it was to be named after a Joni Mitchell song. I answered that someday when a stranger meets her, learns her name and remarks with the answer phrase "it was just a false alarm", she will beam at the connection and marvel in its focus. I made Amelia promise to call me when that happens. I know that the holiday season always brings at least one radio airing of "Same Auld Lang Syne" to my ears, which prompts me to spin at least one Fogelberg album and play "Netherlands" and "Paris Nocturne" on the piano. His was the music of my adolescence. "Home Free" was the intimate soundtrack of my early courtship with my wife and still rewards with quality songwriting and musicianship. Fogelberg's contributions to early Jackson Browne and Eagles tracks often go uncredited. His early career path borrowed many a page from Joni's book, including classically influenced pop writing and use of his artwork for several of his albums. Take special notice of the similarity of covers of "Blue" and "Netherlands", each the fourth studio album from both artists. The gatefold of that record also features a self portrait that is conceptually reminiscent of the "Ladies of the Canyon" cover. Of course, Fogelberg is one of the few artists for which Joni deigned a guest appearance on his "Nexus." I knew the day would come when I would say I missed Dan Fogelberg, but I mourn none the less.
