That was so fun. And knowing the choices of other JMDLers is more fun. If I were Freud, I'd psycoanalyzed other JMDLers based on what they state on The Essentials list. Well, Laura's choice is so interesting. She put Blue and C&S on "Be Careful". Laura, can you tell us the reason? You know, most of us consider Blue and C&S gems. I really do recommend those albums. I once recommend them to my girlfriend (now an ex). She liked it. C&S (specially Help Me) coloured our relationship. We had a tumultuous kind of relationship. And when we broke up, she asked me to give her a song from the album Blue and a song from C&S. The songs were "Blue" and "Down To You". Oh my GOD! What have I DONE to her? "You're a brute-you're an angel You can crawl-you can fly too It's down to you It all comes down to you" Another story. Bob wrote this: I mean, what if your first Neil Young album was Trans? You'd be pretty dang hesitant to pick up anything else and then just think of what you'd miss. ++++ Yes. We should not let a first time Joni listener listen to Taming The Tiger & Mingus. TTT & Mingus are only for Joni intermediate or Joni expert (though The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines is suitable for Joni beginner) That's why I put LOTC on my recommended list. The songs from that album are easy to digest, beautiful, and spread like viruses. And it works. Now my sister (who hijacked my email account) hums The Circle Game every now and then. Rian NP. Trouble Child PS. I cant believe i can use the word tumultuous on a sentence. - --------------------------------- Get easy, one-click access to your favorites. This was posted on audioasylum.com: "I caught the end of the Andrew Marr Show last Sunday on BBC1 which airs at 9 am each Sunday morning, for one hour. Andrew said at the end of the show that Joni Mitchell would be on his show on Sunday next, 2nd December, so anybody who can receive BBC 1 should tune in between 9 am and 10 am. This show is a current affairs/newspaper review show so quite what Joni is doing there remains to be seen. Worth a look though." _________________________________________________________________ Connect and share in new ways with Windows Live. http://www.windowslive.com/connect.html?ocid=TXT_TAGLM_Wave2_newways_112007 ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 1 Dec 2007 06:52:00 EST From: Wtking59@cs.com Subject: Re: Joni Essentials ESSENTIALS: (pick 3) -- I'm omitting ALL compilations from my picks...save for the final question. 1. Gotta say it's a tie between the creative zenith of 'COURT And SPARK' and the bravado performance of 'MILES Of AISLES.' 2. 'FOR The ROSES' 3. 'BLUE' RECOMMENDED: (pick 3) 1. 'LADIES Of The CANYON' 2. 'SONG To A SEAGULL' 3. 'CLOUDS' 3 more would be 'The HISSING Of SUMMER LAWNS,' 'DON JUAN's RECKLESS DAUGHTER' and 'HEJIRA.' Be CAREFUL: (pick 3) -- Reluctantly... 1. 'DOG EAT DOG' 2. 'SHADOWS And LIGHT' (or 'SHINE') 3. 'MINGUS' GO AHEAD And SKIP: (pick 3) -- Ditto. I REALLY wouldn't skip ANY. 1. 'BOTH SIDES NOW' (or 'CHALK MARK In A RAIN STORM') 2. 'TAMING The TIGER' 3. 'TRAVELOGUE' LIVE: (pick 1) 1. 'MILES Of AISLES' !!! To START With: (pick 1) ...a compilation I suppose 'HITS,' 'DREAMLAND' and/or 'MISSES' (although I'd actually prefer either 'COURT And SPARK' or the restored and remastered 'MILES Of AISLES,' as these remain Joni's most innovative--and yet, most entertaining and accessible--works). All the others (i.e. 'Wild Things Run Fast,' 'Turbulent Indigo,' 'Night Ride Home,' 'Songs Of A Prairie Girl,' 'The Beginning Of Survival' and 'The Complete Geffen Recordings') sorta fall somewhere between the cracks, IMO. XXXOOO, Billy NP: "Winter Is Blue (1966) by Vashti Bunyan ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 1 Dec 2007 04:08:06 -0800 (PST) From: Bob Muller Subject: Joni Covers, Volume 95 - Maybe Yule Like it Rrrrripp! Another calendar page bites the dust, and here we are with one skinny month left in 2007. Time to celebrate the dawn of a new month with a CD's worth of Joni covers, so here is Volume 95 in the never-ending series, just perfect for that last-minute stocking stuffer, or put a fat pencil in the hole and make a dreidel out of it. Thanks to my fellow scavengers Monica, Paul, & Mark-Leon for their constant help. Love you guys! Here's where you can go get it: http://download.yousendit.com/8451014325953E11 And here's what Santa has stuffed your stocking with: 1. D*Note featuring Beth Hirsch - Edith And The Kingpin: The HOSL chestnut roasting on a trip-hop fire. Purists may not care for it, but I think it's great. Beth's vocal has a clear whispery quality to match the tempo and arrangement. Some mysterious song, and a nice beginning to this collection. 2. David Cantor - Urge For Going: Hmmm, this one is a bit of buzzkill compared to track 1, particularly when it's one of my favorite Joni songs. Why meddle with such brilliant lyrics? The only good thing I can say about this one is that he throws in a couple of different chord changes, but even those are not necessarily very good. 3. John Trones - River: Very pretty, a theatrical cabaret performance style. I do like the little "Carol Of The Bells" bits thrown in there. And after all, what would be a December covers release be without including Joni's Christmas standard? 4. The Tributes - Both Sides Now: A copycat version of the symphonic BSN recording, but when you're called "The Tributes" do you expect a lot of originality? All that being said, it's OK. 5. Sally Dworsky - All I Want: A genuine vocal, Sally underplays it and is accompanied by an equally subdued piano and it all works really well. One of my favorite covers of this one. 6. Janiece Jaffe - Twisted: A live performance, a very loose vocal, especially when she appears to forget the words and starts scatting along. The guitarist doesn't miss a beat though; really nice Tuck Andress-style playing. 7. Wibi - Help Me: We don't get too many acapella versions of this one, and it's really tight and playful at the same time. Coming to you from the acapella group at York University. 8. Ted Cole - The Circle Game: Accompanied by the kids at Camp Walden. About what you'd expect a fireside version to sound like, perhaps it will bring back some memories for some of you who sang this one at camp. 9. Leo Collignon - Cast Your Fate To The Wind/Both Sides Now: An instrumental medley, if you don't recognize the title of the first half you'll surely recognize the tune when you hear it. (It's composed by Vince Guaraldi who gets a lot of attention this time of year.) A pleasant little piece of acoustic guitaritry. 10. Sherry Kennedy - Raised On Robbery: This one had been on my want list for awhile, lucky for me it got a CD re-release about a year ago. While faithful to the original, she throws in some original touches musically and lyrically. 11. Margriet Sjoerdsma - Help Me: Leave it those European jazz artists to bring the freshest arrangements and sounds to the mix. From The Netherlands, Margriet offers up a tasty pop-jazz take on Joni's biggest hit. 12. Sophia Bilides - Urge For Going/Hot Buttered Rum: Another medley, this one from Greek-American Sophia, who has a lovely almost too-clean voice and is backed by piano. And the medley works because the thought of Hot Buttered Rum sounds pretty appetizing on those Urge For Going days. 13. Jimmy Takeuchi & His Exciters - The Circle Game: Definitely not a campfire version, this one's strictly for twistin' by the pool. Wonderful snippet of cheese with horns, organ, surf guitar, you name it. 14. Janie Fricke - Both Sides Now: Country star Janie Fricke has sung with all the greats, and puts a predictable country stamp on it, without going all Dolly Parton on it. From her "Tributes To My Heroes" CD. 15. Emely Anne - All I Want: Patti's buddy in the northeast, Emely was kind enough to contribute a copy of her CD to the Joni covers cause. Her version of the Blue nugget is pretty solid, close to Joni's but featuring some nice musical coloration too. 16. Gayle & Company - Woodstock: It's tough to put an original spin on Woodstock, and most covers either model themselves on the CSNY cover, Matthew Southern Comfort, or Joni's. This one takes bits and pieces from all of those and adds some new ideas of their own; harmonies, guitar licks, flute solos and such. A nice live folk-rock sound. 17. Liam Frost & The Slowdown Family - River: And here's another original take from this UK outfit, a bit more revved-up than most and it works quite well. 18. Matthew Sandoval - For Free: Wow, this one comes from YouTube and it's amazing in its quiet intensity. Matthew truly makes this one his own, accompanying himself on keyboard. And that brings us to the end of another CD's worth of Joni covers from around the globe, across the years and into your ears. Hope you enjoy it and hope that it brings you some joy. Peace on Earth, well we can always hope, eh? Bob NP: Matthew Sandoval, "For Free" - --------------------------------- Be a better pen pal. Text or chat with friends inside Yahoo! Mail. To process the albums totally out of context and time would HAVE to give you a different perspective. Like I said, as much as I really like Shine (almost like a drug that I quickly became addicted to) I can't fit it in past albums that have been like comfortable sneakers for me for 20-30 years. And the issue will only become more prevalent as time marches on and more and more new fans come on board. I wonder if the music will continue to evolve to the point where subsequent generations of Joni listeners won't even be able to talk about albums per se because they're more tuned into individual songs only? Another tip of the hat to our faithful fun-thread-starter up there in Ohio. Bob NP: Bob Mould, "One Good Reason" - --------------------------------- Be a better pen pal. My criteria was how hard it was for *me* to get into the album. That doesn't mean I don't love every note of the "Be Careful" albums; it was just that those seemed more difficult to appreciate until multiple listens. There's nothing wrong with the "Go Ahead and Skip" albums either, but they wouldn't be what I'd buy someone as a gift who wasn't familiar with Joni. Essentials: (pick 3) 1. Song to a Seagull 2.
