One regret, in this is that I didn't get to pick Turbulent Indigo as one of the best. I do think its a great album, just not better than the ones I did pick in the recommended and essentials category. Same with HOSL. Gosh, my picks seem to go almost by date, too (except Shine). I was not expecting to see such a variety as there was. I mean I've seen Clouds in essentials. I've seen Clouds in skip. I've seen Blue in essentials and I've seen Blue in be careful. How interesting. It seems there is no real majority on any particular thing. Though, as Kevin pointed out, For The Roses does rate high. It also seems Hejira has been doing pretty well in addition. Interesting again! Somebody mentioned that he/she (I forget who, my mind isn't what it used to be) doesn't do compilations when it comes to Joni. I can understand that. I wouldn't recommend one to someone who wasn't into Joni either. With some artists and bands you can easily start off a "best of" album. With Joni (and a few others), I wouldn't suggest to anyone to do so. Her albums are units in a way. Of course they're units with fantastic pieces in them that certainly can be played separately (and thoroughly enjoyed) but the whole is what reels you in. I think so anyhow. -Monika KEVIN DOHENY wrote: I am really glad For The Roses rates highly with most of you and although I agree mostly with everyones assesments of Taming The Tiger it baffles me that the album rates so low but in my opoinion the song Taming The Tiger is probably one of her best ever..The first time I heard it I cried and thought she must feel lile Picasso in a room full of crayons and coloring books...Maybe we should use this "essentials" thing to pass joni along to some of our non joni loving friends..Hope you all are doing well xoxoxo Kev - --------------------------------- Never miss a thing. Dmne: Joni essentials Q magazine always has a section in which they choose an artist or band and list 3 of their albums in each category. The categories being essentials, recommended, be careful, go ahead and skip, live (in which they choose just one), and to start off with (which usually is a compilation of some sort). They do this in the current issue with the Who. In the past I've seen this done with Neil Young, U2, I think the Clash, etc. So if you had to do that for Miss Mitchell's albums, which three albums would you pick for the categories? Obviously all of her albums won't be mentioned but that doesn't matter. Give it a go. Hi Terry, While I agree with you, I think the intent is that especially with an artist as explorative as Joni, if someone is really put off by jazz or synths or helium voices you would hate for them to miss something that is way different. Growing up I was very put off by Joni's upper register, it wasn't until C&S that I actually liked what I was hearing and then there was that Hejira thing when I dove in big-time. Anyway, I think that's the intent of a "Be Careful", that's the way I interpreted it. I mean, what if your first Neil Young album was Trans? You'd be pretty dang hesitant to pick up anything else and then just think of what you'd miss. James Taylor? Not so much, they're all pretty interchangeable and I don't mean that in a bad way. Something to be said for consistency & dependability. Bob NP: Van Halen, "Fools" - --------------------------------- Be a better pen pal. Text or chat with friends inside Yahoo! Mail. That was FUN!!!! It's amazing how fast Joni life can pass before your eyes! I can't imagine how different it must be to generate this list if you did not discover the bounty while it unfolded as Monika is doing. She is still discovering past treasures, but can't place them in sonic or social perspecive to compare their relevance against the work of contemporary artists or the general state of popular music when released. It's a very different perspective from which to consider the work. I'd wonder if there's a historic perspective grade to apply when viewing these ratings (not that one is more valid, but it might reveal generational differences). If we applied a percentage (100% being that you owned STAS during its original release, and every studio and live album since), what is your grade? I became Joni aware with "Clouds" and own all the subsequent releases (except for a couple of the recent compilations) so I'd give myself a Joni grade of about 94%. Depending on what you value, a "high" OR "low" score might be desired. A high score indicating devoted loyalty, and a "low" score indicating complete objectivity. Would "low" score participants make very different choices from "high" score participants once made familiar with all the albums?
