Henry" Subject: Crosby on Wolfgang's got my Wolfgang's vault blurb today featuring a live, '84 solo performance by David Crosby so I thought I'd give that a listen... sorry I did. I don't recall the historic travails of David all that clearly but it seems to me this must've been in a pre-rehab time... god it sucked! (would you believe a CHA-CHA 'Long Time Gone'??!) not butchered quite as badly as many of the others in his setlist was Joni's 'For Free'... a great cover for him to do but does anyone have a soundfile of him doing it before he lost his voice? I'd really love to hear it. I suppose the reason I'm so down about it is because I absolutely LOVE Mr Crosby and always have and somehow until now I've been spared the experience of his lesser self. if you are like me, don't listen to this except perhaps for his cover of Joni's tune... it's interesting and not plagued by comparing it to his own earlier version like virtually all of the other selections. http://concerts.wolfgangsvault.com/dt/david-crosby-concert/20052688-1654.html BTW, Wolfgang's has six killer sets from the Filmore East circa 1970 from which Four-Way Street was partly compiled... all free to listen to... man! THOSE were the days! three consecutive nights in June live! just like going back and catching their shows every night! http://concerts.wolfgangsvault.com/arr/crosby-stills-nash-and-young/1462.html liner notes: night one 06/04/1970 set 1: This is the acoustic set from the third night of CSNY's legendary six-night run at the Fillmore East, from which the Four Way Street live album was compiled. This entire run of shows captures CSNY hot on the heels of success from the recently released Dij` Vu album. This was also during the groups most prolific phase, as all four members were working on solo albums that would soon define them as individual artists. Highlights include the Buffalo Springfield gem," On The Way Home" and Crosby's "Triad," the controversial and unreleased song he recorded near the end of his tenure with the Byrds, and which was featured on Jefferson Airplane's Crown of Creation LP. Material from the first CSN album is well represented, including a live performance of "Guinnevere." Neil Young's medley of two heavy electric numbers in this acoustic setting reveals the core elements of these classic Crazy Horse songs. Stills closes the acoustic set with a great, bluesy "Black Queen," a piano rendition on "49 Bye-Byes" and his then current hit "Love The One You're With." set 2: This is the electric set on the third night of the legendary six-night run at the Fillmore East. The Four Way Street live album contains recordings from this run. This entire run of shows capture CSNY hot on the heels of success from the recently released Dij` Vu LP and was during the groups most prolific phase, as all four were working on solo albums that would soon define them as individual artists. Joined on stage by bassist Calvin Samuels and drummer Johnny Barbata, this captures the group at the pinnacle of its powers. The politically volatile times are well reflected in "Long Time Gone," "Southern Man" and especially "Ohio," which had just been written following the recent shootings at Kent State. By the time they get to "Southern Man" and "Carry On" they are ready to jam. Stills and Young really cook on these two and demonstrate what a great blend their dual guitar attack really is. Crosby's rhythm guitar playing is also outstanding and unique. For the encore, they return for a lovely version of the "Ohio" single B-side, "Find The Cost Of Freedom." This primarily a cappella number (other than Stills' acoustic guitar) is a quiet closer to another memorable night. and similar notes appear on the other concert night pages... 06/5&6/1970 Cheers, Pat Boland NP: Triad - CSNY - -- "The last time I saw Joni was Detroit in '68..." http://www.angelfire.com/pq2/phenryboland/ - -- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Nov 2007 07:11:19 EST From: StDoherty@aol.com Subject: Re: onlyJMDL Digest V2007 #372 In a message dated 11/22/2007 3:05:13 A.M. Eric wonders: What I would really like to know is WHO is the flute player hanging out beside her??? Well Eric, since the title is Sweet Sucker Dance, can I say that he is not a flute player, but just a man who is sucking a sweet (a candy)? Or maybe a man who is drinking coconut water (from the coconut) using a straw. That man could be Tom, Dick, Harry, Jack, Moe, Kwame, Supaporn, or even the black pimp. Rian. NP. Electricity (I adore this song!) Post #2 Title : An Evaluation of jmdl discussion (NJC) Hey Joni people. What would Joni say about this? These few days we just talked about sex, porn, p****, a curse that contains defecation, and nudity. This is SO not right. Come on, let us talk about something that is correct. A topic that i suggest : endosymbiosis. You know, scientists propose that simple eukaryotes evolved from prokaryotes that engulfed other prokaryotes. According to this theory, the engulfed prokaryotes, which remained active in their hosts, underwent changes over time and became the mitochondria of protozoa, or animal-like protists. The theory further holds that when photosynthetic bacteria were engulfed by other prokaryotes, the bacteria continued to photosynthesize within the cells that had engulfed them. The engulfed photosynthetic bacteria evolved into the chloroplasts of photosynthetic protists, the ancestors of plants. This is GREAT isnt it? Rian NP. On the 21 albums list, Joni is featured with Blue (at #7 on pg. 85 though I don't think the album list was going in any particular order). There is a paragraph or two written about it and after every album they list an essential track and what it brought to the world. Essential track: River What it brought to the world: Confessional songwriting or confessional songwriters (something like that anyway) There is also a big picture of Joni opposite the explanation of Blue of her from her Laurel Canyon days. It's one of those photos from the famous photoshoot showing Joni in a windowsill at her Laurel Canyon home from '70. At the end of Q, there is a review of Shine in which the album is rated 3 1/2 stars out of 5. Basically, what is said, is that the album has some very fine good points but it doesn't compare to some of Joni's older work.
