Bob, I checked out this discussion thanks for including it. It is a totally fascinating thread as this one has been here these past few days and its just a few days off 10 years ago! (It was before whiskers started appearing on my top lip :~)) Only one word came to me to describe this thread about Sweet Bird and that was quantum. Its such a tribute to the depth of Jonis art that her songs can trigger so many images, thoughts, mathematical formulae and emotions in others. And Sweet Bird is just ONE song from an album that I remember being critically derided at the time. When HOSL was released I can remember feeling I dont get this at all. Following on from albums like Blue and FTR which contained songs that deeply touched me at the time, I found HOSL interesting but not moving, yet I had a sense that there was something more to it. I guess HOSL was me feeling intellectually challenged. Now, I scarcely recognise myself at that time and in that place as HOSL has become such a favourite of mine. In fact, I am meeting with my bass playing mate tonight to tackle Dont Interrupt the Sorrow. I find it quite extraordinary that you, Bob (my Mighty Eagle as opposed to Sweet Bird), with such exceptional insight into Jonis music could have felt hesitant about adding your voice to the mix, all those years ago. I am very glad you didnt do a number on yourself and denied this list YOU. I might never have met you or heard your Joni fest version of Dont Interrupt The Sorrow. Oh well, it does make you very human and it reminds me how scared we can all feel over appearing stupid, making mistakes or others thinking were not very bright. People who can tune things will still be able to tune things and probably wouldn't need a guitar like this anyway, except that, like the VG-8, it could enable them to switch from one tuning to another more quickly than if they had to do manually. From the little promotional video that Mark sent a link to earlier, however, you still have to push buttons and look at lights, so the VG-8 is still faster - just not as compact as having it all inside the guitar - and more versatile - the VG-8 has more sounds and nearly infinite tuning possibilities with a range of +24 and -24 half tones away from standard tuning. OK, now that THAT is out of the way, I agree with you, Marian - seems like it's no big deal. After all, if I played the guitar I'd want to spend more time playing than tuning, right? It's like bemoaning the loss of skill in using a slide ruler or something. The only down side I see to the technology is that back in the day Joni used to tell the best stories while she was tuning (which is some amazing multitasking I would think). Given the rapid and instant tuning changes, those stories might not be as plentiful - then again, I don't think you can stop Joni from talking, which is a GOOD thing indeed. Joni's biggest fans in Santa Barbara and a few assorted JMDL'ers that attend when it is scheduled. It is at a relatively small music venue and restaurant on the mail street in S.B. It is to raise money for music in the local schools. Cost is $10.00. > Who organizes these events? Khakki No, no - Kate organizes the event. I'm just near LAX airport and am always happy to take visitors up the coast to the event. Victor had traveled out for it once before and Bene happened to be here at UCLA presenting a paper so we all made an event out of it. > According to Victor's descriptions of this most recent >tribute show, which seemed so enjoyable, yet seems to >cost a pretty penny or an arm and a leg to be able to >attend and to enjoy the accomodations of pricey hotels. Just $10.00. We decided to go up the night before to see a little of S.B. and go to this wonderful old tavern in the mountains to hear other music, too. It is off-season now and hotel rates are pretty low. Lesli told us we stayed at a 4-5 star place on the beach and it was extremely reasonable. Maybe you were thinking of another night last week when we went to the Bel Air Hotel bar. To stay there runs in the 1000s of $$. We only went for drinks! Although the loss of youthful beauty is a major theme of the play..In my opinion the advantages of youth play a much bigger role. So unlike night of the Iguana where the stories are roughly the same in the play or in her song.. Sweet bird of Youth(the play) takes a slightly different route. If they fail to revive the play anytime soon the movie is wonderful with Paul Newman and Geraldine Page a master class of acting. Bob.Muller@Fluor.com wrote: Given that we know Joni has referenced Tennesse Williams's Streetcar and now NOTI, I'm wondering if his "Sweet Bird of Youth" was an ifluence for this song. I've not read it. Joni Tribute Kakki, What a breath of fresh air you are. Also, what wonderful and beloved fans to Joni y'all must be. I imagine Victor there, holding his guitar, ready to play anything Joni, and I can't help tears coming down from my eyes. Then I think of you girls, as such gracious hostesses, and imagine Joni so grateful for such pretty people of love and truth she's got to stand beside her. I'm still reeling in from the pain of dying soldiers I was holding in, then released here, but then, again, you came in, and took me away to a special place~~secret spaces that only you and I and all true Joni fans understand where we are coming from. There's this unusual, yet mighty strong wind blowing in, here in San Antonio, and it feels as if it's our energies which are throwing the wicked who prosper into the karma they've made for themselves with our love for all of mankind--and Kakki, this ain't no instant karma---it's taken lots and lots of suffering and heartache on Joni's, yours, mine, and on everybody's side here, on the JMDL. Love, Jeannie ..still in tears and like Joni and Eric, I've still got my head in my hands... kbhla@fastmail.fm wrote: Jeannie - I'm on digest so maybe your questions were answered but just in case: > Does Joni ever show up at these tributes? (but i was curious about her) After spending a few weeks writing a script, choosing the soundtrack, and preparing for her film acting debut, Joni went to Toronto in December 1980 to film her segment as part of a film anthology called "Love". The 9 stories in the movie were all written by women, and they each concerned themselves with the stated subject of love in its many forms. Others involved in the film in addition to Joni were Edna O'Brien, Lady Antonia Fraser, Penelope Gilliatt, Gale Greene, Nancy Dowd, Liv Ullmann, and Mai Zetterling, who directed her own segment, Edna O'Brien's, and Joni's. Joni's 14 1/2 minute vignette presented her as a black male pimp named "ART NOUVEAU", dressed in the same drag she wore on the cover of 1977's "DON JUAN'S RECKLESS DAUGHTER". Joni originally came up with this character when she had to create a persona for a Halloween party. The soundtrack she chose for herself was mostly Miles Davis music, as she told her hometown paper at the start of the project: "My vision of the relationship between the soundtrack and the visuals is very precise. The character I play, for instance, is a Miles Davis fan, and he carries the soundtrack around with him on a big portable cassette player". Joni also contributed the title song "Love", played over the opening credits, which she wrote setting the words of a poem from Corinthians to her music. The film's producers kept extending the release date further and further, a year, then 2 years. As late as 1985 there were still rumblings about a release, but as far as I'm aware, the completed film has never to this day had even one showing in theaters. I have had word of "Love" being shown during small film festival weekends. The biography section on the site is great. But its not updated. Her stories from 1998 to present are missing. Will someone from the site complete the biography? It will be a good source for a beginner Joni-expert like me. Rian. NP. Comes Love. - --------------------------------- Be a better pen pal. All these movie talks (Love) raised a new question. Can Joni act? I havent seen her Love. But, ive seen her portraying Killer Kyle, on The Beat of Black Wings video, which i thought errrrrr.... Whats the word uh? Im not very good using euphemism.... Hmmm, let me finish the sentence. ...Which i thought a little bit painful. Actually i like the video. The Joni-silhouette is terrific. But when it comes to the Killer Kyle. Ummmm. I cant finish this. Rian NP. Bjork Cocoon (Vespertine is a great great album) - --------------------------------- Be a better pen pal.
