I actually thought her reasoning (on what she called her "arrogance") was very insightful.<< George W Bush and Usama bin Laden are egotistical if not complete megalomaniacs. Joni Mitchell, on the contrary, has a VERY healthy ego. The big difference is in their contributions to life here on earth and not just some ignorant ideal always involving death. It is not egotistic to confront evil with the beautiful truth. Nobody since Beethoven has done it so well as our little Joan....... 100 years from now (if humanity somehow survives this epidemic stupidity) Joni will be recognized as the completely unique genius that she is, rivaling David's Psalms and Van Gogh's canvases. Creatively stating the truth is in no way egotistical. But blatantly lying to incite hatred and ignorance is my personal definition of the real ego problem embroiling our poor planet. 20 years from now people might begin to realize that SHINE blows HEJIRA away with its significant brilliance if we somehow manage to survive our severe egotism killing everything in its path. I'm not nuts (I hope). Just crazy in love..... ET 'Shine on the pioneers / those seekers of mental health Craving simplicity / they traveled inward / past themselves... It's so very meditative. Very atmospheric. Very reflective. I also must say Joni's voice is so very soothing in that song. I've been pressing the "repeat" button on that particular track quite a bit. It almost is a sort of meditation for me (which reminds me that I should start meditating again...) as it helps me get my mind off of recent events which is something I really need at this point at times. As soon as I hear that guitar, followed by that lovely guitar slapping, I am in a trance almost. And of course when Joni's voice comes in, everything else just fades away. It's almost like she herself is comforting me (obviously I know she really isn't but this is the power of great music). Monika +++++++++++++++ Youre right, the song is very meditative. And also thoughtful, pensive. The lyric is superb. How do i know the lyric is superb? Simple: my Windows Media Player tells me that ive played the song 156 times since the first time i got it (13 months ago), but still i havent got any slightest idea what the song is all about. Of course i understand the meaning of each word, but i still cant get the big picture. Example : Golden in time Cities under the sand Power ideals and beauty Fading in everyone's hand Golden in time? Cities under the sand? Even though i dont know the meaning of those words (as sentences), i must admit Joni gathered the words perfectly. Another perfect word-gathering: Behind our eyes Calendars of our lives Circled with compromise Sweet bird of time and change You must be laughing Up on your feathers laughing I melt every time i listen Calendars of our lives. And of course this one: Guesses at most guesses based on what each set of time and change is touching. Damn! My IQ is 143 but still i cant digest that sentence! Rian NP. I have always thought Sissy Spacek could have played Joni. I know the associations between Spacek and Loretta Lynn strong enough to raise a few eyebrows, but I think particularly now, Spacek could portray the "grown up" Joni. As far as younger actresses who could carry the role, in my humble opinion, it would have to be an unknown. While I agree that Scarlett J. or Kirsten D. could carry off the visual depiction of young Joni, I don't think either could do the singing. For me, the performance would not be convincing if the actor didn't do their own singing....Now, as I say that, I remember how much I love "Grace of My Heart" in which Illeana Douglas gave a great performance without doing the singing. So maybe we don't get all of the minute details that way but it explains how YOU perceived the evening and it's just as valuable as the facts and figures. When you tell me how you feel about the event I see it through your eyes and can be there right along side you in spirit. I'm so happy that you enjoyed the evening of tribute performances, I know I certainly enjoyed I haven't done a major Joni-fest either (unless you count the Carnegie Hall extravaganza) but have attended a couple of smaller events and have met some wonderful people through the JMDL. I sometimes wonder what happened to Terri and the crew I met in 2000 at the Townshend in Birmingham Michigan, I only see a couple of them posting from time to time. Lesli, I appreciate that you took the time to tell us about your evening, I look forward to seeing more posts from you in the future. love, love, love, Cassy ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Nov 2007 23:48:29 +0000 From: Stephen Toogood Subject: =?Windows-1252?Q?Re:_Ian_Shaw_=96_Talk_To_Me?= Oh what a surprise! Had seen his Joni covers album on amazon a few times, but had not expected it to be anything special. I really like this. Okay I am not saying it is the most amazing thing ever, but considering I do not particularly like Jonis original (thanks for sharing your toilet habits Joan...) it is definitely something. Love that Latin jazz feel, really suites it. Definitely interested in the whole album now. She also has fairly prominent cheekbones. She could portray Joni at various stages. Except maybe her youngest years. She could easily do her middle career and with a slight aging makeup, her current look too. Mark in Sydney On 11/11/2007, at 10:12 PM, Marion Leffler wrote: > Yes, I thought of her, too. Tavis: But it also makes you a genius, though. That antenna picks up a whole lot which is why - I've been trying to figure out why you are so bright. I get it now. Your antenna sticks up better than the rest of ours. Interesting, that explains why when i walked into that Santa Monica restaurant, Joni instantly knew i had come for her. I could have been a regular patron but she sensed it the second I walked in. Not that anybody ever doubted she had extra sensitivity. I remember when Joni's Shine Lyrics were posted, pre-album release there were some folks - including myself - that were wavering over its lyrical or poetic substance. Were the lyrics to simple? Were they to black and white? Or were just they lacking depth? Asking myself as scratched my head. Well, I proved myself very wrong on my initial approach as this album has exploded for me lyrically like a snowball rolling. With each listen I find the lyric foundation keeps mounting and layered with a musical complexity that only Joni is capable of doing. Its just brilliant. Sweet Bird (11 times in a row already)<< I really relate to this Rian. When my band learned any song by Joni we had to play it at least 20 times before even beginning to get it. And to prepare to sing it with the band I had to listen to it dozens and dozens of times. Yet we could learn a Beetles song in a few takes. I feel that 'guesses based on what each set of time and change is touching' refers to the fluidity of evolution. Everything is an educated guess because nothing can be accurately predicted since time is constant change. This world is but a set of probabilities based on time changing. The line 'Golden in time / cities under the sand' I think means that the Golden Age is now a desert, literally and figuratively! I realized many years ago that it requires a high IQ to truly appreciate Joni..... ;~D ET 'the earth spinning and the sky forever rushing' ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V2007 #358 ********************************* ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:onlyjoni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
