You'd have to find an actress who could manage to create some sort of resemblance to Joni (create as makeup, hair dye, etc etc exists) and one who could pull off the ability to portray Joni through the many phases of her career. Not to mention you'd need an actress who could really pull off looking like she can play guitar (maybe one who actually can!) because let me tell you something. There are some films in which it is obvious that the actors playing musicians really have no clue on how to look like they are playing their instrument. It's sort of a let down when that is something crucial to the story. -Monika Marion Leffler wrote: Yes, I thought of her, too. Although it must be said that most of these films are made after the artist has passed. She's not the rag to riches story nor is she the junkie musician story (though she certainly dabbled with some drugs) but she most definitely has led an interesting life nonetheless. There are many aspects of her life that are unique to her (giving up her daughter, getting married so, so, so young and then divorced, making the transition from folky to jazzy, etc etc) that easily can be made into a story--not to mention how the art was created in the first place. You know, how it came, where it came from, etc etc. I'm always interested in the creation myself. -Monika rian afriadi wrote: Still talking about the movie, I"m not sure Joni will approve any movie that is based on her life. If I view films, they have to be foreign to keep my attention. I just saw, 'The Clay Bird,' about Pakistan's pluralistic culture and turbulent times of the 1960's. Same ol', same ol' sh*t as present times; families and country torn apart by war, using the lies of religious strife as a license to kill. I felt this movie was appropriate to watch with what's going on over there right now. It breaks my heart to see little children and women suffer for the mistakes of certain so-called religious and militaristic men. But, I did see, 'Borat,' on HBO a couple of weeks ago and I found it extremely entertaining and hilarious and I couldn't stop laughing with all that I am. Before that, the only American movie which caught my attention and I saw about 35 times was, 'Napolean Dynamite.' I loved that movie, though I got burned out of it already. :)) I've come to nearly hate Hollywood and all it stands for. But, I found this thread about actors who would be able to portray Joni in a movie and asked my son, who knows about the Hollywood star maker machinery, since he's taken some film classes. He thought about it and said, "Joni's difficult to portary, Nen. Her cheekbones are very pronounced, like yours. She's one of a kind in everything, including looks and the way she carries herself. You, know," he said, "with that certain grace that's not easy to capture, even by a first rate actress. But, let's see who I can think of." I too, at first, suggested, "Roseanne Arquette and Faye Dunaway." He replied, "Uh, have you seen all the work they've done to their faces recently? They don't look the same. You're better off with the younger Arquette sister, Patricia Arquette, and she's not exactly a good candidate to play Joni." He went to his room to play his X-Box 360 and later came out with these suggestions. Though, he just told me he's not finished thinking about it! So far, for a young Joni to thirty something, he's suggested Scarlett Johansson. For Joni into her late thirties and on to her fifties, he can't think of anybody yet and says that's kind of difficult. For Joni in her fifties until now, he has suggested either, Julie Delpy from France or Michelle Pfieffer. He just thinks, Julie Delpy's accent is too strong. I'll post up later on the rest of his ideas on this portrayal on Joni. Later on, too, I must talk about a documentary on HBO on patriotic pain. Awful! I wanted to die! :( Love, Jean Mark-Leon Thorne wrote: The most appropriate person to play Joni in a movie to my mind would be Rosanna Arquette. I think sometimes we forget we all want to be appreciated in some way, even more so when it comes to creative matters. At this past Jonifest, I attended the Jonifest songwriter's workshop where we actually had this exact conversation---about Joni's need to defend her work vs. pure arrogance. I remember Les (British Les) brought up very good points (as did some of the others in the group). He basically said something along the lines on how he could understand Joni always standing by her work. He didn't call it arrogance as much as he said it was natural. He said something along the lines of how "naked" you are up on a stage, wanting everyone to like you, and thinking, "hey look at me! I'm playing, please listen" (he didn't say that word for word but that's what he meant). I think we all want to be appreciated and sometimes that doesn't come across when looking at another. -Monika Lindsay Moon wrote: I didn't get a lot of egotistical attitude out of that interview. She did seem convinced that smoking is not going to present a health hazard to her. Smiley's unstructured interview wasn't a smooth as some but he did elicit frank responses. Didn't Crosby once compare Joni's ego to Mussolini's? ;-) Scott Tired of spam? Yahoo! I'm very grateful to be able to hear some songs from such a work as THOSL (my favorite Joni album by the way) in their basic, most bare form. I absolutely adore THOSL and I'm very grateful to be able to hear how some of the magic came together for that album. I particularly enjoy the "Sweet Bird" (I'd call it a favorite of mine anyway) demo. It's so very meditative. Very atmospheric. Very reflective. I also must say Joni's voice is so very soothing in that song. I've been pressing the "repeat" button on that particular track quite a bit. It almost is a sort of meditation for me (which reminds me that I should start meditating again...) as it helps me get my mind off of recent events which is something I really need at this point at times. As soon as I hear that guitar, followed by that lovely guitar slapping, I am in a trance almost. And of course when Joni's voice comes in, everything else just fades away. It's almost like she herself is comforting me (obviously I know she really isn't but this is the power of great music). -Monika Tired of spam? Yahoo! I also apologize for getting you and Paz confused in the musician's movement. It's Paz who's in Thailand and you are there in Santa Barbara. I wish I could be there. I feel so far away from all the Joni action in California here in S. Texas. Enjoy everything, including your blackened salmon. This is going to be an amazing night of Joni Mitchell music. Shine is playing over the P.A. For all of you For the Roses fans, there are 5 songs being played tonight from that album. I need to go because my computer battery is about to go dead and my blackened salmon is getting cold. Victor, reporting from Santa Barbara nj ' Tired of spam? Yahoo! These are also among my very favorite of Joni's songs and, this morning on the way to work, I put DED in the CD player and, when I had to stop and wait at a train crossing, Impossible Dreamer came on, and the sun was shining on this aspen tree and the wind was blowing a little bit and making the leaves sparkle and it was just such a beautiful visual accompaniment to this song. And then I started thinking about Joni's universal truth songs - like BSN and ID and SB and S&L and Hejira.... and now we have Shine which is practically a whole album of UT songs. - ---------------------------------------- From: "Eric Taylor" Sent: 11 November 2007 22:17 To: "jmdl" Subject: Craving simplicity Listening to SHINE yet again today and loving it more every time I am just in total awe!
