And it has been getting lots of attention lately, so who knows, perhaps it will keep inching its way up. It's a fairly complex song, and typically requires a full band capable of pulling off the jazzy rhythms and chord changes, not to mention the vocals. Like so many of her songs, Joni makes it seem easy and it most certainly is not. Although it could be, it's not likely to be played solo, unlike BSN, BYT, Circle Game, ACOY, Woodstock, etc. Urge For Going was her first song to be recorded by another artist, with Tom Rush & George Hamilton IV leading the way. So, it had the benefit of a head start - plus, it's a DAMN fine song. Bob NP: John Mellencamp, "Large World Turning" Tired of spam? Yahoo! That is, no more compilations of tracks she's already released. As you say, any of us with just a minimum of technical know-how can make our own Joni compilations all day long. I would support a compilation of unreleased tracks, like the alternate Mingus songs, Hunter, her first sessions with the Siegel-Schwall Band, demos, etc. And I think even casual Joni fans would pick up on that as well. I also think "Urge For Going" is very interesting being there on the top 10... +++++ Maybe because Help Me is too complicated, and that discourages most artists to cover the song. If you check again the top 10, youll find that most of the songs on the list are relatively simple (except All I Want and Carey). Still talking about covers, Youre So Square is #16 and Twisted is #11. Well, can we say that theyre JM cover? You know, Joni herself covered the songs from another singers (i forgot who). So, IMHO, Youre So Square and Twisted shouldnt be on the list. And still talking about the cover, Im so surprised with the fact that there are 552 musicians who have covered BSN. Thats roughly 14 covers every year. Roughly 1 cover every month for almost 4 decades. Well Joni, congratulations. Rian NP. This is something I've always admired about Joni, how she manages to remain friends with her exes. Just ask k.d.lang. The sound editors of the TNT tribute were very generous toward her performance, as anyone there at the taping could attest. If k.d. can't ace it, it must be difficult. I was hoping that she'd have done "You Turn Me On I'm a Radio" anyway. She more than redeemed herself with her gorgeous version of "Jericho" on Songs of the 49th Parallel. In fact, in my book she's got credit. Speaking of the TNT tribute, although it's all water under the bridge...I'm still scratching my head as to why Elton John didn't do "Two Grey Rooms." "Free Man In Paris" was an obvious, lazy choice from someone who didn't care to mine too deep into the canon. I guess it suited his arena piano style but he didn't have to invest much in it. Whatever, he probably pulled in more than a few viewers. CC _________________________________________________________________ Windows Live Hotmail and Microsoft Office Outlook together at last. Perhaps that's because so few musicians are able to wrap their frets around her greatest achievements. Amelia should be #3 on this list!!! I fondly remember being lead singer in a band, Dog's Breakfast, back in the early 80's. We played several Joni tunes. Black Crow was the easiest but it took us forever to get Jericho down. We had to play it over and over at least a hundred times before I could even begin to sing it and our bass player gave up after the second month. So it was just me and the guitarist who preformed it on many occasions. It remains one of my very fave songs to sing and especially harmonize with. We also did All I Want and This Flight Tonight which are fun and easy to play. If I were in a band today I'd want to cover: 1) Borderline 2) Night Of The Iguana 3) The Wolf That Lives In Lindsay 4) Fiction 5) My Secret Place 6) Slouching Towards Bethlehem 7) Turbulent Indigo 8) Otis & Marlena 9) Sweet Bird 10) Dawntreader ET 'Holy Earth how can we heal you?
