I can't believe no one has covered The Arrangement. It's such a powerful and haunting song. Love it." Jenny - congratulations on your record ! I just started catching up on the digest for the past few weeks. Need to get my copy ordered (don't wanna wait til next Joni fest) I too am surprised that this is a first cover. I have a personal anecdote about this song (this will be a repeat post I fear). I first heard Joni circa early December 1970, when my roommate at college introduced me to the relatively new LOTC album. (I had been listening to Judy Collins's Wildflowers quite a bit, and he thought I might like this one - ha!). Anyway, I became really enthusiastic about LOTC, and played it for my dad later that month at Christmas break. He listened to the whole thing, and commented that the song that grabbed him the most was the Arrangement. He was 55 years old then, with a wife, 6 kids, a house and a job. 37 years later, as he nears the end of his life, I still recall that moment, and the way the he related to Joni's lyric and perfectly fitting "haunting" melodic and harmonic lines (he has always been a great lover of classical music, and was a tympanist in our local orchestra). Over the past several years, having found myself in a somewhat similar situation, I too have related directly to The Arrangement, and play it on the piano from time to time. Joni was 26 years old when she wrote that song. Pretty insightful that she could peer so deeply into the psyche of another living in a totally time and space in life, and produce such an enduring work of art at such a young age, eh ? I believe that Joni is partial to this song, too. Rightly so, IMO. Part of the reason is of course to pay homage to Joni on her 64th natal day. Nearing the end of the 2-hour program, a lady called and requested for Joni's Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire". I thought she could be one of of the JMDLers or a Jonivangelist out to spread the good word about Our Lady Joni. I said "Good choice! that's from 'For the Roses'" right? She said she is not sure (major faux pas! ;-) "but it is in the album with a blue cover" The last time I checked FTR has a predominantly greenish color, but I didn't argue as I told her that I am definitely playing a Joni as the last song before the next dj comes in. But as luck would have it, the LP (yes we still play the great ole LPs in our station) for FTR is nowhere to be found. So instead played 'Same Situation' from C&S. I thought the song's lyrics are particularly apt for the Joni now. ... Every bonafide signature I've seen of Joni's has rounder humps on the "n" in Joni, an open loop on the "M" in Mitchell, a separate stroke to cross the "t" and a flatter top to the "c." I'm no expert but this one looks odd. CANADA There really are two different schools of songwriting--American and Canadian. It's interesting. You guys have this history of guys like Paul Williams and Jimmy Webb, and they're different than Neil Young and Joni Mitchell and Leaonard Cohen. All those weird voices come out of Canada. That's because it's so cold here we can hardly open our mouth. We get much less light in Canada. No wonder the writing's dark. JONI MITCHELL Shine (HEAR MUSIC) 5 STARS By Paul Zollo Songs of beauty and outrage, songs of an artist in a war-torn world severed from nature, where fishermens nets come up empty and children play in the proximity of falling bombs. A shock-and-awe world of macho militarism waged in the name of God. A world in which Joni, after nearly a decade of silence, returns with a somber, but non-sanctimonious masterpiece that balances dark sorrow with orchestral exultation. Her capacity for lyrical expression has always been so sophisticated that some tend to overlook the miracle of her music. Yet she possesses a rich musical vocabulary of her own invention, consisting of complex chords, idiosyncratic syncopations, distinctive vocal harmonies, textural soundscapes and spacious melodies. The album, which begins with a stunning instrumental, is self-produced with an artists sensibility, each soulful syncopation complemented by delicate dabs of paint-tapestry drums, pedal steel, oboe, keyboard swells, distorted electric guitar leads, harmonica, stacked vocals harmonies and haunting soprano sax hovering in and around the edges. Like Steely Dan and the kings of reggae, she understands the value of space in music-eschewing sustained chords that bleed over many measures to savor and mingle the colors in a delicate sonic dance. Her smoky vocals, confident and strong, etch the lyrics like charcoal on an eggshell. These are songs that require and reward repeated listenings, as she mines fresh melodic territories, liberating her tunes to twist and turn in unexpected directions. Her language is at once colloquial and complex, compacting observations with stunning economy, as when she depicts the sorrow of mans dystopian disengagement from nature and awareness by showing the cell-phone zombies who babble through the shopping malls In these songs, not unlike previous masterpieces such as Hejira, Just Like This Train or Chair In The Sky, the opening verses are so conceptually watertight that it seems impossible to expound on them further, and yet she does, expansively. When she first sidestepped confessional songwriting years ago to investigate the world she saw, many decried this progression, hoping shed repeat Blue. But her songs have always been about her, about the experience of an artist in these times. And perhaps better than any songwriter of our era, shes a genius at zooming in and out of songs, presenting the big picture by showing the tiny, telling details. Her lyrics fly from fleeting concrete, examples to timelessly aerial views, always leavened with wistful humor, as in the title song, in which she constructs a counterpoint of mass destruction in Gods name with the traffic jam tumult of another asshole passing on the right. She stands within the world, yet far enough away to focus in it, contrasting the absent songbirds of the past with the present strange birds of appetite which have replaced them. Theres nobody else who could write songs like these, and that shes still doing it-and bringing work of this depth to a marketplace that often celebrates the frivolous-is a reason to rejoice. You would think "Help Me" being such a big single would be up there in the top 10. It certainly would be a fun song to cover, don't you think? I wonder why it isn't higher on the covers list? We"ve had Hits, Misses, Dreamland, The Beginning of Survival, and Songs of A Prairie Girl. Do you think there should be another JM compilation? Speaking for myself, I think there should be another one: a compilation that covers Joni"s experimental era, from THoSL to Mingus, to celebrate Joni"s 40 years of good music, next year. Suggested track list : 1. In France They Kiss On Main Street; 2. Edith and Kingpin; 3. Don"t Interrupt The Sorrow; 4. The Hissing of Summer Lawn; 5. Sweet Bird; 6. Coyote; 7. Amelia; 8. Black Crow; 9. Blue Motel; 10. Refuge of The Road; 11. Talk To Me; 12. Jericho; 13. Otis And Marlena; 14. Don Juan"s Reckless Daughter; 15. Off Night Backstreet; 16. The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines; 17.The Wolf That Lives In Lindsey. I made the compilation for myself, played that on Rian"s Dad"s Toyota while traveling to Bandung, 3 hours from my hometown, and i thought it was the best compilation i"ve ever made. Anyway, this is not the compilation i mentioned on the last JMDL digest. Rian NP. The original version of Cool Water. Tired of spam? Yahoo!
