(dear JMDLers, please give a listen to that song, i guarantee the song is terrific.) And about Feist, ive seen her once on TV (a relay from Canadian MuchMusic), it was a one hour program where she sang live. I was a lil bit disappointed at that time, i found her voice on her album (I have her Let It Die) so much better than her live performance. People who love you call you on Sunday morning and tell you about a very important show you are about to miss because I've got my head up my you know what and having been keeping tabs on the JMDL list. I got three phone calls saying "Joni's on TV!!!" I'm so glad I watched, she looked great as usual. My big question though is where do I see the Hancock tribute with her doing "Tea Leaf Prophecy?" Is it on You Tube? Was it on TV and no one called me? I need to know because I need to see this. What an obscure song to play (not one of my favorites but of course that doesn't mean I wouldn't crawl across the desert to see her perform it.) Another question since I've been absent: Marian, how many songs have you worked on from SHINE? Has "If" been tabbed yet? I was going to start working on that one this week. I'll check out the House tab, too. Thanks for being here, as always. What is the House tab? I did a tab of If, but I think it was in the wrong tuning, so I took it out of jmdl/guitar and replaced it with another one in the MATW tuning. I don't know, what do you think? Should I put the first one back in, even though I think it's not the right tuning? It sounds pretty good, but the chord shapes are not really "Joni chord shapes", which was what made me give it another try in the MATW tuning, where it's just barre chords for everything. With the first one I did, though, there are parts for a second guitar to do the riffs that are done by the piano in the recording. I'll put it back in if you think I should. What I wouldn't give to have someone to play Joni songs with on a regular basis! Wish we lived closer!!! What has been interesting in the whole process is discovering that there are many possibilities for creating the same sounds. Once I went to a Joni tribute concert here in Vienna where the guitarist - a very talented Austrian jazz/fusion guitarist, Gerald Gradwohl - had learned to play all of the songs for the evening using standard tuning and it all sounded EXACTLY like Joni's guitar playing - stuff like Hejira and Amelia and Barangrill. I was amazed by this! We talked afterwards about the JMDL guitar site and he said he wished he had known about it before the show because it would have made his life a lot easier, since it's so much easier to create Joni's sounds using her tunings. What seems to be true with Joni's tunings is that the chord shapes always seem easy and are clues to whether or not the tuning is correct - like a shape like 666500 or 777777 is a clue that the tuning is okay - even 797877 is okay, but something like 887780 or 10 10 99 10 0 would be a clue that maybe the tuning is wrong (these are shapes from my first attempt at If). ----- Original Message ----- From: William Waddell To: Marian Russell ; mitchell, joni Sent: Monday, November 05, 2007 11:05 PM Subject: Sparkles on the Ocean >>>it should be another tuning It sounds spot on to me.... Although most singer-songwriters touted by the press as the next Joni do have lyrics that are appealingly observant and illuminating, none in my opinion comes close to the marriage of language, insight and music that Joni has given the music world. There are singers whose lyrics are wonderful, non-linear and profound but none with the consistency (and constancy) of Joni. I do appreciate a number of contemporary female singers though whose way with words and ability to encapsulate an insight in poetic forms, give me endless pleasures. I remember seeing the Letterman performance of 'Sex Kills' (I think it was Letterman I remember) but somehow watching the youtube clip really bowled me over. What a gutsy song to perform on a national tv talk show and what a powerful performance! And Letterman kissed her hand! Whenever I see video of the young Joni, (the Just Like Me clip) I am always amazed by the flexibility and range of her voice. And she just looks so amazing. She still does look amazing but there is something about how she looked in her 20s that always intrigues me. She looks precocious - like she *would* question her Sunday school teacher about anomalies in Genesis. She looks even younger than she was at the time but there is also something knowing about her. Mischevious, but also solemn. I always thought Galadriel woudl look something like Joni. Cate Blanchett was close enough, though. I'm rambling now. So enough.
