So many of the old gang - where have they gone? I was also thinking that we should do a "10 Year Anniversary" edition of the cookbook! It would be great - and kangaroo, duck and new and exotic dishes would be very interesting. And Marian - we can finally thank all the people who were left out of the first edition, too! I was curious about what I described that night at Joni's art exhibit so went back and found my old post reviewing that night. So here is it in pertinent cookbook part ;-) Kakki Excerpt from second digest of 12/2/99 I just didn't know how quite to approach her. At one point I saw her grab a bunch of friends and head out to a little balcony off the back door. I figured she was going for a cigarette and I was right. I made my way through the hoardes and got my spot out there and she was holding court and talking about al kinds of things. There was the usual bunch of schmoozers coming up to her and she was very sweet and warm to all of them. I finally made my way up to her and introduced myself as from the JMDL and presented her with the Jonifest Box Set. She was truly excited about it and then exclaimed on and on about the cookbook that we did for her!! (So, Marian she got it!!) She truly went on and on about the cookbook to everyone standing nearby and thought it was just the neatest thing! She especially RAVED about the bios that we included - she found them so interesting. She probably mentioned the bios to me about four times! So I said, "well, there is a commonality with a lot of us" and she exclaimed "Nietsche! So many people mentioned Nietsche in their bios"! Her friend Charles Valentine was standing next to her (he's the guy dancing with her in the PWWAM video) and she started raving to him about our recipes and how we used the song titles and came up with these clever recipes. I tell you - she absolutely loves that cookbook! I told her a bit about the Jonifest Box Set and how we have this once a year and how she has inspired so many of us to take up our guitars or paintbrushes again. I also told her that she just had to hear the incredible music of the woman who put together the cookbook, Marian. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Nov 2007 00:52:32 -0800 (PST) From: Jeannie Subject: Re: Joni on CBS Morning Dearest Eric, Ever since you returned to the JMDL, I have felt a friend of Spirit in you and a common Joni bond that is so real and true and it's so nice because it's one with Joni! When I see that you've posted, I get happy as a clam at high water and rush to read what wisdom and appreciation of Joni you share with us. I relate to you the most and appreciate you as a brother in Joni. I know that most here on the JMDL are Joni's biggest and #1 fans, but with all that special, unique love both you and I feel for Joni, we may well be at the zenith. I'm so thankful you are here, alive and fully awake, because I relate with you the most. Take care and Godspeed your sad, bitter and brave tears and your sensitive, sweet love from your most innermost soul you share with us all, Eric! I began to grasp this holy fact back in 1979 when the disco shit hit the fan. So Joni releases Mingus........ Sometimes it scares me how much I listen to Joni. But then I contemplate what it would have been like to live in the days of Beethoven. Seriously. Thank you SO much for reinforcing my total addiction to JM Jeannie! When will the world wake up? I love the "attitude" of the dancers at the beginning... I can't quite put it into words yet but there's definitely an attitude there. And it is also amazing how the presence of Joni is so palpable... she hovers over the entire proceedings without ever being seen. Her life work is truly astonishing... you would have thought just creating Hejira would've been enough... but oh no she goes and gives us this absolute jewel. Yes "the hopeful girl in the dreamy dress"... my interpretation is that she represents the young Joni... especially how she dances around the room at the end of If I Had a Heart... Please anyone who tries it let me know if they think it should be another tuning. It seems to be a new tuning, so it could be I got it wrong, but the chord shapes for this tuning are consistent with other Joni songs, so maybe it's okay. I totally can't do Joni's shuffle guitar style - it's so strange that it's hard to even find the beat. I was trying to count it out in the car, and I couldn't understand it at all. I could possibly sort of approximate it, but it wouldn't be what she's doing - it's totally unique to her and it is a wonder that she can even sing at the same time that she's playing in this manner and change the tempo of the singing (most noticeable in "at night he's in my garbage cans") over the steady unusual guitar rhythm. I wonder if she can really do that up close and personal or if it's that she recorded the guitar track and then is singing over it. If the former, well, we already know she is truly amazing and this would make this fact an understatement. Just keep trying, though - play along with the recording - and one day, everything will click and you will surprise yourself! - ----- Original Message ----- From: "William Waddell" To: Sent: Monday, November 05, 2007 6:59 PM Subject: Thanks Marian > Thanks to Marian for the chords to This Place. In liner notes and interviews, he speaks about what it was like coming to Joni's work mid-way through her career (he says he was a "jazz snob" before then). This is a man with exquisite taste and ears, a composer since the early 60's, who has connected deeply with a fellow artist. Maybe it takes an artist to truly appreciate another artist--the rest of us just follow our ears and eyes. This is SUCH exciting news to many of us in Pittsburgh! Hey Joni, it is still legal to smoke in public here and we are a very innovative town. Martha Graham invented her dance here attending CMU as a ballet major. She rented an abandoned steel mill where she developed her earthshaking brand of modern dance. It is a shame that Martha, and also Andy Warhol, had to move to New York City to gain international acclaim. Andy is buried a mile from my house..... The BRAVO! debut was only an hour long so I know there are several more songs in the works. Please let one of them be Night Of The Iguana! I would LOVE to see how the dancers interpret the dead drunk preacher, the boy in the see-through blouse and the widow with her lover boys down on the beach!!! Another masterpiece I hope Jean Grand-Maitre is considering is Borderline. I see this danced by two men alone, without shirts. Just my 2 cents...
