I love music videos, but only if they have the artist's input or approval. They are a way to rethink the musical creation in another artform. I wish Joni would get into it herself. I'm certain that you're not, Rob. It was a bit on the obscure side, and it's not like John Doe has been snagging the headlines now or ever. His version of ACOY is indeed captured and compiled already - it was not on his latest album but was available from his label (Yep Roc) as a free download if you pre-ordered his CD. Which I did, natch. I had the opportunity to see him in a tiny coffeehouse not too long ago and had a great conversation with him afterwards. A sincerely good guy. Performance artist John Kelly doesn't so much impersonate Mitchell as channel her, and he does it with a blend of affection and discernment that is remarkable to behold. A few audience members at the Boston Center for the Arts, where the Theater Offensive is presenting Kelly's show this weekend as part of its Out on the Edge Festival, may go in expecting your basic drag act. At first Kelly plays to that expectation - he's wearing a wig and a dress, after all, and he exaggerates the mannerisms of his subject (the prayerful hands, the rubbery grin) with the fond mockery you'd expect from a guy who honed this act at Wigstock in the fabulous 1980s. But things quickly turn more interesting, even before "Joni" introduces her band: bassist Vincent Van Gogh (Blake Newman) and, on keyboard, a pigtailed Georgia O'Keeffe (Zecca Esquibel). Near the end of the first song, "Conversation," Kelly's lovely, eerie countertenor, which he's been using to deliver a spot-on Mitchell imitation, suddenly swoops down and in some mysterious way, turns masculine - just for an instant, but it's enough to smash the illusion that we're watching Joni Mitchell in concert and, in the same instant, make us notice how expertly Kelly had cast that spell. It's not easy to say how he does it. His face doesn't really resemble Mitchell's, and he doesn't use heavy makeup to exaggerate whatever resemblance there is. He achieves the effect more through gesture, expression, and tone of voice - oh, I know: It's called acting. That shouldn't be surprising, for Kelly is a gifted actor as well as a dancer, singer, and visual artist. (Local audiences may remember him from "Orpheus X" and "Dido, Queen of Carthage" at the American Repertory Theatre.) But subtle acting is not what people expect in a "drag show," and that may be one reason Kelly resists that label for what he does. Another reason may be that the dress is the least important part of his performance. Where more traditional drag reinforces and exaggerates the conventions of gender difference, Kelly transcends them. He's not particularly focusing on Mitchell's gender in his portrayal; it's not her femininity (whatever that means) but her spirit, specifically as she expresses it in her music, that interests him. And that spirit, as Kelly evokes it, is a fascinating blend of foolishness and wisdom, an aura of goofy enlightenment that will produce a patchouli-and-clove-scented haze of nostalgia around anyone who heard these songs when they first came out. If we laugh at his evocation of two of Mitchell's many personae - the groovy hippie troubadour and the ultracool Hollywood chick - we are also laughing at how our younger selves longed to be as groovy, as cool, as worldly and wide-eyed as she. But we're also celebrating all that. For some of us, who weren't as obsessed as Kelly (like many others) clearly is, 90 minutes of Mitchell may be all we'll need for a while. (Or even, as I sighed to myself during one of the longer longueurs of "Slouching Towards Bethlehem," more than we need.) What's surprising, and wonderful, is how much we do need it, and how much it gains from this strange and shape-shifting form. There's a moment at the end of the show, which I don't want to spoil by describing it, when Kelly's transformation takes a final, surprising, but absolutely appropriate twist. Then, as in the earlier surreal "Circle Game" singalong, encouraged by a swaying and beatific Georgia O'Keeffe, it feels as if there's really only one word for the way Kelly plays with a famous, complicated persona and with our own ideas of the person behind that mask. It's genius. Louise Kennedy can be reached at kennedy@globe.com. - ----------------------------------------------------------- Politicians and diapers both need to be changed often. "I never had time to stop and reflect and look back and put together something like a 'career retrospective,' because I was always plowing forward," says DiFranco, 37. "The baby interjected a little pause in my life." She tackled another project long on her back burner: a book of her poetry called "Verses." "These are poems I wrote with the intention of them being spoken word, because that's my job -- I travel around and put on shows -- so that's the context I write for. To print them was disconcerting."" And you know there may be more....another singer who paints! "Tony Bennett, Emmy- and Grammy-winning crooner, has another talent: painting. "As long as I can remember, I have wanted to do two things: sing and paint," he tells us via e-mail. In a new book, "Tony Bennett in the Studio: A Life of Art and Music," his artwork is used to illustrate reflections on life. It has been quite a life, with friends like Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra and Duke Ellington. One of Bennett's favorites is a portrait of Ellington. Or not. I just got through running in shorts and short sleeves - thank you, global warming! But I do need to go ahead and get to my covers; after all, this should have gone out 2 days ago, so sorry about running behind the times. But I hope you'll think this month's edition of new releases will be worth the wait. Lots of gems and hard to find obscurities this time around. Thanks to Mark-Leon for his assistance with this one. Anyway, here's where you can go get it: http://tinyurl.com/33kj4o And here's what awaits you when you do: 1. James "Jez" Graham & The Trio - Hejira: Awesome! A really nice way to get the #94 party started. A peppy & lengthy jazz instrumental workout, wonderful interplay between piano, guitar, bass, and drums. Joni would really like this one, I bet. 2. Ben Jelen - Born in Scotland (of Czech parents), and now based in NYC, Ben was discovered by a Calvin Klein agent looking to make a model out of him. But as you can tell from this track, he is much more than just a pretty face. He's got a great voice and the right sensitivity for River, recorded in 2006 for a holiday compilation. 3. Michael Gott - Both Sides Now: What if BSN had been written by Stephen Schwartz (of Pippin & Godspell fame)? It would sound like this excellent cabaret version by Dallas-area singer/songwriter Michael Gott. An interesting arrangement with some unique transitional chords thrown in there. I just love it when a BSN has some surprises in it for me. 4. Freddy Freeman - A Case Of You: There's no mystery as to when the Bear arrives in this song...(you'll have to visit his website to get that little joke). Freddy's version of ACOY is a pretty one, he sounds to me a lot like Dan Fogelberg. Although I am surprised he didn't cover "Freeman In Paris"... 5. Megan Birdsall - Help Me: 6. Megan Birdsall - That Song About The Midway: Jazz vocalist Megan Birdsall was born in Kansas City and is still based there even though she has been all over and trained at Berklee School of Music. Her vocals are very soulful and spirited, the arrangements are original, and her band is excellent. I hear a little Dusty here, how about you? 7. The Accidentals - The Circle Game: The crackles and pops give this 1969 recording away, as does the vintage sound. The Accidentals were the vocal group of Hollins College in Cincinnati, and they included this speeded-up take on TCG in their '69 LP. Some nice harmonies, and an overall nice nostalgic feel. 8. Cowboy Junkies - River (live): Unfortunately, the Junkies have never officially released this one (yet), but they did perform it at the Carnegie Hall tribute and in a couple of performances following, including this bootleg. Margo's voice is well-suited for it, and Michael's mandolin is an excellent complement. 9. Orchester der Vereinigten Buhnen Wien - Both Sides Now: Hailing from Austria, this orchestral variation is inspired by Joni's 2000 version with arrangement by Vince Mendoza. And like that version, this one is very lovely. 10. Jockel - Big Yellow Taxi: Also from Europe (Germany I believe) comes this hard-to-find 1997 recording. Some nice acoustic guitar, nothing too fancy, gets the job done just fine. 11. Dan Grinter - Woodstock: Another guitar/voice cover, this one is modeled by the lovely arrangement of Eva Cassidy's recording. Dan sounds a bit like Kenny Loggins to my ear. 12. Christine Evans - River: Another 2006 holiday recording, Christine featured this track on her website as a free download, so if you missed it then, here it is now. And she does a nice job, accompanied by piano & strings. 13. Clearwater Ensemble - Both Sides Now: From their "Baby Boomer Hits" release, this muzacky instrumental version is pleasant enough but doesn't bring anything original to the table...14th floor, going up! 14. Joanne Hartman - Chelsea Morning 15. Joanne Hartman - Michael From Mountains: Another hard to find LP, and unfortunately this one is a bit the worse for wear. Joanne (from Rochester NY) does a good job with her Joni songs, and I certainly can't complain that she only does early Joni because at the time she recorded these she only had 2 or 3 albums to pick from. 16. Terry Frewer - Help Me: From a 1974 CBC Broadcasting audio sampler LP, another obscure one - luckily not played much so the sound is nice. Also interesting to note that this instrumental recording came out the same year as C&S so it's probably the first cover of Joni's biggest hit. 17. The Unsweetcandy - River: This one's a little raw, the singer hesitates on hitting the high notes, and the rhythm never feels quite right. I think their heart's in the right place anyway. 18. Joshua Bloom - Both Sides Now: Also a raw sound, but I like this one for its awkward sensitivity, the tentative nature of Joshua's voice lends a certain authenticity to the feeling of the song. It sounds like he's singing the song just for himself, and doesn't care that he misses a note every now & then. And there you have it - another silver circle's worth of Joni covers for your enjoyment, amusement, or whatever -ment you care to attach to it. As always, thanks for reading & listening, thanks to the artists who tackle Joni's songs, and thanks to Siquomb for giving them so freely to us in the first place. To that Mitchell says: "Only the late 20th century?" She's kidding, of course, but Mitchell has had a career few artists can imagine and has an influence that goes far beyond her folk singer roots. She was born Roberta Joan Anderson in 1943, to an Alberta (Canada) grocer and a schoolteacher. As a young girl, she was happiest outdoors, but much of her early life was marred by illness. She said she would have been an athlete had she not contracted polio, scarlet fever and severe chicken pox. "I was shipped to another city," Mitchell tells Early Show news anchor Russ Mitchell. "So I was kind of battling it on my own. And I was in a room with a 6-year-old boy who was very depressed. And so I would sing. That's when I started singing. And he'd tell me to shut up. So once I had heckler for my first audience." The young Mitchell soon discovered that she could make singing pay. Unable to afford a guitar, she bought a baritone ukulele for $36 dollars and taught herself to play. For more on Joni Mitchell watch Sunday Morning at 9 a.m. ET. Enjoy! He's a big Joni fan, he spoke about her paintings in the 2000 TNT broadcast. OK, time for me to get to MY housework...send Hana down this way, willya? **** Did you say "Peace Center?" In *Green*ville? Hey Ms. Treegreen, let's get on this flight tonight and ease on down the road to the Peace Center in Greenville! We'll pick up Bob and all go looking for a party. And as for sending Hana down your way.....sorry, Bob. I'm holdin' on to Hana. You can have Marcie, though. I love Marcie, but she can be a bit of a downer sometimes, you know? Always looking for that postman. Hey, Joni should introduce Hana to Marcie. I'll bet she could fix that faucet, and help her get a good grip on her grief. But still somehow, Marcie's a pretty good housekeeper. So she'll wash your flower curtains Hang them in the wind to dry Dust your tables with her shirt and Wave another day goodbye Bye bye! Chaka Khan is one exception to this rule. I know Joni has a few female friends. But when I try to come up with muscial collaborators, Chaka is the only one I can think of. I have joined the three parts of TFATD together and burned a DVD. I then designed a full DVD package (cover, inlay and disc label). I'd be happy to make a copy and send it on. Particularly to anyone in the Southern Hemisphere. I have kept it as NTSC because when I converted it to PAL the quality was bad (lines followed the movements) and was unwatchable. Anyone who has already got the DVD, feel free to use my designs. You can get them here http://download.yousendit.com/C05584017EFAC090 This is a wonderful program. These Albertans really know how to dance and it is a new way to visually interpret Joni's songs. Many thanks to Coleen for making this available. I've seen a couple of videos of hers from the 80's so it got me thinking.<< I would love to see Hana and Night Of The Iguana. But Joni has made three stunning videos from SHINE with the Alberta Ballet ~ If I Had A Heart, If, and Big Yellow Taxi 2007 ~ on The Fiddle And The Drum. The little girl in the dreamy dress steals the show!!! I've been watching this awesome interpretation of Joni's more obscure, profound compositions all day and I am completely BLOWN AWAY..... Passion Play and Slouching Toward Bethlehem particularly touch me. Also ADORE the Joni cameo in The Beat Of Black Wings as a black Killer Kyle! Charlie Mingus would still get really turned on by this....... And Big Yellow Taxi is simply PRICELESS. As a student of ballet and modern dance I can tell you that those dancers had the best time of their lives dancing to Joni's undulating syncopations. I only wish that Martha Graham had lived to see this. O how very lucky we are to have such a gorgeous genius in our messy midst transforming such ghastly ugliness into such breathtaking beauty! Never before and maybe never again will the world see an artist as talented as Joni Mitchell. I am just SO happy to be alive to witness her magic.
