I just can't begin to describe it all but there was Herbie, Wayne Shorter, Al Jarreau, Quincy Jones, Thelonius Monk, Jr., Terrence Blanchard, Roy Hargrove, George Benson, Chris Botti, George Duke, Nancy Wilson, Luis Conte, Vinnie Colaiuta, Hubert Laws, Patrice Rushen, Sting, Joni and more all jamming for 4 hours. My Gawd. Herbie is 73 years old and doesn't look or act a day over 35. Bu tthe biggest shock was JONI. Something has happened to totally rejuvenate her. She was absolutely radiant and gorgeous and seriously looked like she has lost 25 years in age overnight. We all said that this must be because she is creating again and in a good place. She was dressed in a very flatterting (no funky pleats and folds this time) long brown silk jersey kind of belted catsuit with a long flowing overskirt. Very slinky and she wore also tight sleek brown leather boots. When Herbie was about to receive his award he said that his closest friends were going to join him and out walked Wayne, Joni and Sting all hand and hand. Herbie then played for awhile. Then he introduced Joni with the most reverent praise. She came out and sang Tea Leaf Prophecy with the entire band. Then---you won't believe it---but she next sang Hana with all of them and it was nothing like on Shine. All who may not like the song too much mlyself included) would become an instant convert hearing it live with all these amazing greats backing her up. She seemed to be having the best time and was just belting it out and rocking and dancing. There is a new Joni in town, my friends. I think we felt like we were seeing Joni perform 30 years ago. It was just amazing. There were lots of good quips - my favorite was Quincy saying to Joni he remembered "Tommy Scott when was only 17 years old." I can't believe our good fortune to have experienced this particular night of music. Wow-wee! I like Hana just fine on the record but I'm sure that with the caliber of musicians she was working with it became a brand new song as opposed to accompanied by keyboard frills. I had read in some official review of his new work that he was 73 but he is only 67 going on 35! I had wondered about the 73 myself because he used to appear back in the day at my college campus student union and he was not that old then! More stuff I left out last night in my high and exhausted state: Before singing Tea Leaf, Joni spoke very sweetly about her mother. She said that when her mother passed away, she received condolences from all over the world in different languages and that many referred to her mom as Molly McGee. Joni said that the song was about her mother but her name was Myrtle. She referred to her a few times as a "little Irish girl" (which made my heart skip a bit) and described her mom and a friend getting all dressed up to go to high tea at a fancy hotel and having her tea leaves read. Joni then proceeded to sing Tea Leaf with the name Myrtle and some of the lyrics substituted from the original. Joni's fans in high presence: While Herbie was being officially lauded some in the audience politely shouted out "We love you, Herbie." Then there was one nearby who politely shouted out "We love you, Joni." I smiled and said - "oh, perhaps one of our lurkers." But then, there was another faction of boys from apparently the Joni frat house who started constantly yelling "JOE-OHH-NEY!! OO-RAH, JO-UNNIE!!" Oh God, they went on and on! They were seated in an exclusive private balcony which made me wonder. Then I was thinking - oh I hope they are NOT any of our lurkers! ;-) Quincy Jones related his philosophy of the creative life, which I had heard before and just loved. He paraphrased a little last night but basically said "Creativity must have humility, success must have grace, that's the way God wants it to be." I had previously heard it a little differently that "God will take it (creativity) away from you if you don't have humility and grace." As a former and sometimes current creative sort, I highly agree with his words of wisdom. Paz got A LOT of good stuff captured! ;-) I have seen previews of the pics and they are great - all things considered that it was being done on the sly. There were several professionals filming the night and I would love to know where the finished product will show up. Maybe we need to keep an eye on Herbie's website. Let us all wish that the big guys will tour with Joni. Oh my, this is what she needs!! Following is Eric's report. Excuse him for not being a Joni freak, he has many other qualities. Laurent "She looked great. Received with standing ovation when introduced as a "true renaissance human" by Herbie. He talked a bit about her diverse artistic endeavors. She opened with the song about her mother (name escapes me) but she confirmed that it was about her mother and that she had initially changed the name of the character in the song but that her mother had died last year at 94 and she was OK now to use her mothers' name. She performed two songs. Big band onstage led by HH with Wayne Shorter on the sax. great performance. Other highlights of the evening included Nancy Wilson, Hubert Laws, Chris Botti and Sting. Sting did a soft version of My Funny Valentine with Terrence Blanchard playing the old Miles Davis slot. It was amazing to have this level of players all in the house at one time playing a well stages 3 plus hour show. (Including the initial Thelonious Monk Trumpet competition. All for a good cause and purpose with very positive energy. Truly one of the most amazing collections of musicians and they all performed beautifully. They taped it for some kind of broadcast so you should be able to see it at some point. What a concert! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Oct 2007 22:08:23 -0700 From: "paul meyer-strom" Subject: Re Herbie tribute and JONI tonight Thank you so much for the inspiring review, Kakki. I want to be there. (I don't suppose they taped it?) All who may not like the song too much myself included) would become an instant convert hearing it live with all these amazing greats backing her up. She seemed to be having the best time and was just belting it out and rocking and dancing. There is a new Joni in town, my friends. I think we felt like we were seeing Joni perform 30 years ago. It was just amazing.<< Thank you SO much Kakki for sharing this excellent review!!! It made me feel like I was there in spirit. May I say that I am not at all surprised that they played Hana. I've absolutely adored the studio version since my first listen and can almost hear it being played by such an awesome band! My first impression of Hana was that it sounded like a new song by Weather Report. I attended several concerts by Joni 30 years ago and was mind blown. I'll never forget her reworking of Banquet back in (I believe) 1983. But Joni's past stuff doesn't thrill me nearly as much as all of the later stuff from WTRF on. TI still might be my all time fav but Travelogue is definitely up there. And Shine has captured me like no other album in many many years. Herbie's latest River is a masterpiece and I dweam that they all tour together. A little jealous... ;~) ET ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Oct 2007 23:19:26 -0700 From: Michael Paz Subject: Folk Uke Check out my friends Kathy Guthrie and Amy Nelson and their video of "Shit Makes The Flowers Grow" as well as one of the songs they did on the City of New Orleans tour when we hit Tipitinas. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xlIOI3fDz5c http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmtHOlOw-dM and of course while you are there you can check out Jack Neilson.
