The anti-smoking crusade started in Beverly Hills back in the early 80's and has swept the world like a forest fire. I can sort of understand this law in a state that now gets only two inches of rain per year thanks to the global warming its constant traffic causes. Now a terrorist could chain smoke driving up the 101 and set the whole damn state on fire tossing butts out the window! I am willing to start a DVD tree if anyone is interested. I can burn 5 copies for people who will burn more for other people. Eventually, I hope everyone who would like a copy will be able to get one from a burner. Let me know if you're interested in being a burner and offering this DVD back to the list. I know the lyrics are possibly not her most innovative, but it's the first time I've ever noticed Joni saying anything remotely feminist, and I do think that if women were more involved in running everything, there would be more focus on constructive things like education, health, food for everyone, peace, prosperity. But getting back to why I like the song, I find the chord changes, melody, voice, the heart with which she sings this song, so beautiful. AAJ: How did you select the twelve songs to this new album? Was it an easy process? LS: Larry Klein (who produced the record, and is my husband) and I started with songwriters who had influenced me, such as James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, Steely Dan. The difficulty was to keep the list short. We wanted the collection to represent some of the highpoints in pop songwriting of the last fifty years. We wanted to illustrate the fact that songwriting, at its highest level, is the new poetry. ............................... AAJ: While you were born with deep roots in bossa nova you were also listening to jazz and singers like Joni Mitchell in your youth. What was the door that opened you to this different music? LS: I think I was very fortunate to have grown up in Brazil during a time where there were less records being released, and there was much less competing for ones attention. Consequently, when an artist like James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, or Steely Dan put a record out, it was an important event in our lives. It was an opportunity to sit down and immerse ourselves in the world of a great poet. Brazil is a country that has its eyes and ears open to the world, while still keeping a strong sense of its own identity. I am also the youngest of many kids, so I was exposed to a lot of different music by my siblings, as well as my parents, who were musicians and songwriters. Our house was a gathering place for many of the great upcoming Brazilian artists of that time. ..................................... AAJ: How was it like working with Herbie Hancock in his new CD where, again, you are singing a Joni Mitchells song? LS: It was wonderful. I have always loved the song Amelia, and Im sure that you can imagine that singing around Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock is a dream for any musician. I love the way Wayne and Herbie dialogue with each other and comment on the poetry. The foundation given by Dave Holland and Vinnie Colaiuta is also perfect for the telling of the story. I find Herbies record sublime. And it was produced by my husband She sings DOWN TO YOU on her latest album, The New Bossa Nova. First though, is it the November Vanity Fair???? After reading the review from the Blender Magazine I was angry, disappointed and frustrated. What does "A seam of zany gallows humor" mean?? And why would a reviewer care or bother to mention that Joni has a "bugaboo" about cell phones??? AND..."If Joni is decades past her prime as a songwriter....." who does the reviewer think he/she is, making that really dumb comment? It's really easy to 'review' or offer comments on another human being, isn't it? Especially when the universal "you" can't possibly know how another person feels or thinks UNLESS the almighty comment-maker has spent a decade or so in another person's skin. I want to think that Joni reads (if she does) all of the reviews of "Shine" and comments made about her and either appreciates some remark that's made or has a good laugh or pushes an internal button 'erase' from her incredible mind. I can't imagine offering a critical word about someone like Joni....gee, when was the last time I ever thought of even putting together the words in one of her lines of lyrics? Wait...I'm not talking about our threads or discussions on the Digest....this is an appropriate arena and I believe we are all caring and coming from a clear, well thought-out place in our minds when we discuss things. As far as the irony that Joni writes about the planet and has made the decision to smoke....this is Joni's decision. I have a very strong feeling that Joni respects second-hand smoke etc. I'm fairly sure that Joni feels and does things that maybe anyone may have an objection to...an opinion about...the point is that Joni is and has always been a woman who is an individualist and I don't think she has ever really given a crap about what anyone thinks about her thoughts or decisions. Joni is a genius and with having an intellectual capacity that far outweighs the 'average' person, she's bound to have some differences about her that the 'average' person just doesn't quite gets. I guess...nope, I know I can rant on and on about this but I obviously feel very strongly about judging another person....please don't take this to extremes...we all judge someones actions one time or another. Switching gears....Dave, I'm so very glad you and your family are safe and had the chance to stuff your possessions in two cars. Is there anything you need? Do you personally know of things others might need? Again, switching gears....I'm really thrilled for Carly and JT being grandparents!!! What a fabulous name that precious soul has been given. I hope the wind carries that away soon. I wonder how Joni's house is, and "Our House". Hopefully they were spared, too. I finally reached my best friend from 8th grade who has a horse farm in Vista, and she's okay too. Phew! Now I can sleep in peace. May you all do the same. Love, Patti P. **** Hi, all. I've only had time to glance at a few digests, but I did see Kakki was worried about us here. Thank God, all is fine in our area. We were just south of the fires (Rancho Bernardo is two towns north of us) so we were very lucky. Again. (For the fires three years ago in Scripps Ranch, that is one town east of us.) We did leave on Monday night just thinking we might need to be out of here should they announce an evacuation. Luckily we had a place to stay. We came back yesterday and although it's smoky and ashy, it's fine. The whole thing is paralyzing and unbelievable. On Tuesday I just stared at the TV for about 12 hours. Thank you all for your concern. Anyone heard from Dave Blackburn (who lives in Fallbrook?) I sent him an email to check up on him and Robin today but haven't heard.
