Suze here, and I was so fortunate to have Randall and Ashara visit September 25th. I planned a house concert for that evening and although it was a weeknight we had a dozen or so people in attendance. I can tell you that Randall disappointed no one. He began with a cajone rendition of 'Under African Skies', from Paul Simon's Graceland. It was so beautiful and unexpected and for me, ironic because a week prior I had pulled out that CD for rotation in my car - I had not listened to it in a while. Randall also played many songs from his new CD, which I encourage you all to buy http://cdbaby.com/cd/randallb3. Guatamala, Spirit of Amelia, Stronger for Your Flame, Ghost in the Machine, I Will Come for You (which was beautiful and brought tears to my eyes) and we sang along with Yoko, and Randall threw in Big Yellow Taxi for the Joni listers in the crowd. Oh, and we were treated to a new song, not sure of the title but I will call it "Another Year Around the Sun" as that is the chorus that sticks in my head. Just brilliant. Please do yourself a favor and contact Randall or Ashara to see when they are traveling through your town. Everyone had such a good time and Randall lets the music flow through him almost if the listeners were a conduit feeding his muse. Example: "I have been in this business for twenty years. It's dog-eat-dog. The competition is always trying to steal your customers." Dog-eat-dog means that a person is like a dog that will eat another dog. Sometimes people say, "It's a dog-eat-dog world", as an excuse when they have hurt another person. Example: "I can't believe you sold him your motorcycle for so much money!" Reply: "Hey, it's a dog-eat-dog world." It's a dog-eat-dog world means that you must first watch out for your own interests, because other people will be watching out for theirs. Kate - -- http://xoetc.antville.org Who Does She Think She Is? ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Oct 2007 16:50:45 -0400 From: Jerry Notaro Subject: Hey Judy - SJC H e y J u d y by Jim Otey, Pollstar October 10 2007 Over the span of a career that's endured more than 45 years, singer/songwriter Judy Collins has performed the works of dozens of other songwriters. However, she's only recorded one by John Lennon and Paul McCartney - until now that is. Collins' latest album, Judy Collins Sings Lennon & McCartney, was released in June on her own Wildflower Records imprint. The album features a dozen songs from The Beatles catalog. Previously, the only Lennon / McCartney composition the singer ever tackled was "In My Life," the title song of the 1966 album that marked her departure from singing strictly folk music. "I never fooled around with them either," Collins told Pollstar. "I didn't try to do them." So why now? The singer said she thought it was time to revisit the work of what is arguably the most successful pop-music writing team in history. "I've done albums of all Leonard Cohen and all Dylan, and I just decided it was time go back and pick up those two fabulous writers," she said. "I didn't do it because of the 40th anniversary of the Summer of Love; I didn't even think of that. "I just thought it would be a delicious thing to do right now. I sort of needed the fun." For most people, the thought of approaching such well-known songs would be a little daunting. Collins said a song's history is a non-issue for her. "You know, when I recorded 'Send in the Clowns,' 200 people had recorded that, including Frank Sinatra. "What matters to me is if it's a song that's the real deal that I've fallen in love with. I only chose songs that I adore and that I've always adored. It was just a matter of sort of plucking them out and not doing anything that either of them had written alone, or that George Harrison had written. I just wanted Lennon / McCartney." Another thing Collins avoided was seeking guidance from the surviving member of the duo. "Paul is a friend. I'm crazy about him, but I neither consulted with him nor asked him permission, because I'm relating to the songs. "Really, in a terribly strange way, that's what happens when it's a great song - they don't have anything to do with him anymore. They live in their own illustrious, memorable manner and they're a combination of those two people that can never be repeated." Lest anyone think that she's jumping on the cover album / standards trend that seems to be all the rage lately, Collins points out she's been recording other people's songs alongside her own for decades. "It's always been a combination for me. When I started out, I was, of course, not a songwriter. I started out doing traditional folk songs, although I had been raised on Rogers and Hart, et cetera. "I just recorded traditional things in the beginning, and then I began to record The City Singers' songs and those wonderful songs of Tom Paxton, Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie and Dylan. That was my forte, and then I discovered and recorded Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell. "I started writing in 1967 and this year I will have been writing for 40 years. I can look back now and say that the intermix of my own work with the other writers has always been unique because it's a certain group of people that I love to sing." Nearly half a century is a long time to sing the same songs, especially when performing live, but Collins said she's found ways to keep them from getting stale. "If you don't feel that you're singing the song for the first time, you miss something. So that's my approach. I always try to make it fresh. And besides that, I always choose songs that are going to be timeless. "I don't choose anything unless I'm really flat-out head over heels about it. And that means that I've got to still be head over heels about it. Sometimes I take songs in and out; I won't play them for a while and then I'll come back to them. Plus there are always new songs being added. It's great fun to have these songs to put into the mix - to go from 'Send in the Clowns' to 'Blackbird.'" With 40 years of her own songs, plus hundreds of songs by other writers in her repertoire, how in the world does Collins narrow it down to a manageable set list? "That's a good question. I have a certain group of songs that I rotate pretty regularly. And I try to go into my own catalog and rotate those so that I'm not singing 'The Blizzard' every night. I try to mix it up with 'Trust Your Heart' and 'Born to the Breed' and 'Song for Duke' or 'Singing Lessons,' which is a more recent song. "I put a group of those together, but I try to intermingle them so that I don't get tired of them. Now, of course, we're doing 'When I'm Sixty-Four,' which is such fun! So I'll come off of a long string of my own songs and then do 'When I'm Sixty-Four' and it's a great change of pace." For her current tour, Collins is out with only her musical director, but the simplicity of the production doesn't limit what she's able to do. "I play the piano, he plays the piano, I play the guitar, and we have a lot of flexibility within that structure. And nobody's doing that. I have no fireworks. "It's wonderful. We've stripped down all the electronics too, so it's just piano. We don't have the second keyboard or the third one anymore. We took out all the computers, synthesizers, et cetera. "It's really Judy Collins Unplugged, and I'm just crazy about it. It pushes you to other things. I can't wait to get my new autoharp tuned so I can add that into the mix." Collins' current tour schedule includes dates through next May. The singer laughed as she explained, "That's just the beginning - I hate to tell you. I've always done this. I've always done 60 to 80 shows a year." Upcoming highlights on the singer's itinerary include stops at The State Theatre in State College, Pa. (October 11), the Omaha Performing Arts Center in Nebraska (November 2), The Grand 1894 Opera House in Galveston, Texas (November 10), Benaroya Concert Hall in Seattle (December 2), the Schuster Performing Arts Center in Dayton, Ohio (December 7), The Heritage Theatre in Campbell, Calif. (March 15), and the Suffolk Center for the Cultural Arts in Virginia (May 8). Over the course of her career, Judy Collins has mixed the work of dozens of other songwriters in with her own impressive catalog. With so many songs a constant in her professional life, one might wonder what Collins listens to for fun. "I listen to a lot of classical music. I listen to Josh Groban and Pavarotti. I'm a fan of lots of artists. On my computer now I have Sting's most recent album and the new album of Suzanne Vega, who's a friend. I keep up with who's writing what, who's singing what and what people are doing." Besides the Lennon / McCartney album, Collins has another project she's putting the finishing touches on that's a little closer to home. "I'm in the midst of putting together a tribute album of other singers singing my songs. And the list of performers - I'm just kind of blown away by it. "It started because Chrissie Hynde said to me, 'You know, one of my top 10 favorite songs is 'My Father.' And I thought, 'Why don't I get her to record that?'" Singers contributing to the project, which is due in the spring, include Joan Baez, Rufus Wainwright, Dolly Parton, Hynde, Dar Williams, Jimmy Webb, Shawn Colvin, Leonard Cohen, Arlo Guthrie, Amy Speace, The Webb Sisters, Pure Essence and Mary Chapin Carpenter. Collins isn't falsely modest about her staying power, her impact on music over the years or her influence on the current crop of singer / songwriters like Tori Amos, Norah Jones and Rufus Wainwright. "I've always had a fresh audience. You know I've been doing this 48 years. The seasons come and go; the fashions come and go, but I stay. I can't have a revival - Arlo [Guthrie] said he was having a reunion of one, like a lot of these bands that are getting back together to go out on the road. "It's a growing phenomenon, but I don't think there's any doubt that my own presence has helped the singer / songwriter revolution revitalize itself. I think I've helped them. "I know that's true because a lot of these young singers tell me. I have a label now with a lot of other artists on it, so I work with a lot of these young artists - people like Dar Williams. They say, 'You were the one we all listened to. You're the one who kind of got us on this track.' So that's very nice. It's very confirming." Collins' label, Wildflower, began as a vanity imprint, but she soon discovered a whole crop of people who liked the way the label operated and wanted to work with her, including Jimmy Norman, Kenny White, the Pork Belly Futures, Heather Greene and '70s Australian rockers The Saints. Music isn't the only thing that keeps the singer busy these days. Following the death of her son 15 years ago, Collins began speaking publicly about suicide recovery and has written three books on the subject. "It happened of course because of tragedy. Sometimes those are the things that perhaps motivate you in ways that nothing else could quite do. I certainly did not envision myself doing keynote speeches for mental health groups and suicide recovery groups. "Since my son's death 15 years ago, that's been my way to give back, to help people with a situation that is just totally mysterious and puzzling to most of us - and extremely painful. I talk about things which are depressing and gloomy, and yet leave people with hope. And that's the whole point. I don't think I would have gotten through it if I hadn't done that." ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Oct 2007 17:53:45 -0400 From: anon anon Subject: Christgau on the Rolling Stones There was some discussion a while ago about Robert Christgau's reviews of Joni... I am finally emerging from it all - with a new character nose ;-) a new elbow and finally back on martinis ;-) I have dragged myself from the convalesence couch the past several weeks to read the list and all of the fabulous takes on new Joni and Herbie. It is funny but I agree with all the critiques on Shine whether sharp, negative or overwhelmingly positive. The bottom line for me is that, while there is lots of room for criticism, I am very struck by the "bones" of her music on this one. Regardless of the lyrics or synth sounds, to me there are some real wow moments there as far as the music. I can transcend the Pro Tools or whatever and swoon about the notes. Funny, when I finally got the CD from Amazon, I played it for my 86 year old mother. She is very picky, picky but she just raved about it. Thought Joni sounded her best ever (and believe me she has had to hear Joni in all incarnations playing in the background since 1968). Also funny is that her faves were the same as mine - If I Had a Heart and Night of the Iguana. Overall, I hear Joni coming from a good place. I am also looking underneath Joni's music to see the deeper or hidden meaning. My take on the new Zydeco flavored BYT is that she is sending a message about New Orleans and Hurricane Katrina. The Herbie tribute totally surpasses all others. Geez! Completely off the chart. That is the way it should be done and I am sure Joni is gratified and very pleased by it. It is absolutely a masterpiece and I can also see some Grammy nominations coming. As for Starbucks watch, I am sorry to report that two in downtown L.A. and one on the westside still have NOTHING displayed and no album in the rack.
