In keeping with that, I thought it might be a fun idea for as many as want to write a quick note to Starbucks thanking them for supporting Joni and playing her music. I just went to the Starbucks website, chose customer service for Retail Stores, put in the address of the store I was at, and gave them a big verbal hug for their efforts (I know some of it was spotty, but hey, I'm focusing on the positive here). Couldn't hurt, huh? Now I'm thinking I should have ID'd myself as being part of the JMDL (you know, 'half a million strong', but oh well). I'm with you, Joni Sister! My mom was like that, too. (TIC: Mama taught me the deeper meaning.) Thank-you notes are very important, and a lost art. And Janet, toi aussi, who encouraged us to file friendly complaints with Starbucks. Both sides now. "Dear Starbucks: Thank you very much, thank you for your presence and for being here and everything, thank you very much, but there was a little problemo in some of your stores on September 25th...." Are there any lawyers here? Can we file a jmdl class action suit, asking for compensation for the "mental anguish" we suffered at Starbucks yesterday? We have long since been out of contact. He wrote to me today to tell me he was at Joni's opening last night and did I still like Joni? HA! Well he sent me six pictures of Joni, the exhibit, Rosie O'Donnell and Herbie Hancock. Joni never looked better. Very happy and gorgeous. I have sent them to Les to post on the web site. now me: And I just got home from my day at VioletRay Gallery in NYC. The exhibit is the "Green Flag Song" that was shown at the Lev Moross Gallery in LA last winter. Due to space limitations, there are only 111 large panels and 15 small panels on display in NYC, but according to a couple of the people today who were in LA, the NYC exhibit space is much superior to that in LA. I was lucky enough to spend all afternoon there, pretty much with the gallery to myself for most of the day. The images that Joni has captured here are quite unique. The story behind them is that her TV crapped out, showing the pictures on the screen in negative and for the most part, in green tones only. She took pictures of the TV screen with hundreds of disposable cameras and had the negatives digitized in high resolution. For the exhibit, these panels of 3 images arranged vertically are quite large (about 30" wide by 60" high) and printed on a single canvas. They are best viewed from a distance, and some contain multiple images inside each of the thirds. And as good as they looked in the daylight in the gallery space, when the sun set, the artificial lighting made these works pop off the wall. There are items for sale at the gallery. The large panels are priced at a mere $27,000. The smaller ones (about 12" wide by 24" high) are much more reasonably priced at $7,000. And for those of us who Jimmy and Ed have not yet adopted, there are exhibit catalogs available. The deluxe version is signed by Joni and also includes a printed (or lithographed, I don't know which) small panel (unframed) in a large presentation box and folder for $1,650. And for the rest of us, the signed exhibit catalog is available for $175. They are not selling unsigned catalogs. I was not able to bring mine home today, as Joni was a no-show at the gallery today. It seems that after the very crowded opening Tuesday evening, an extremely happy Joni pulled an all-nighter (what a surprise!) and slept in today. According to the exhibit director Chrissy Glenn, each of the entities (Starbucks, Hear Music, Sam Feldman, and Joni) had their own guest lists for the opening, and JM.com was inadvertently forgotten. If you are interested in purchasing any of the available items, you should contact Chrissy or Gaylen at 917-913-2700. Joni is supposed to be there to sign catalogs on Thursday or Friday and they will ship them out after that. I arrived there today not really expecting to get to see Joni the day following the opening. But all day long, it was a possibility that she would arrive to sign catalogs. Not only was I excited at the possibility of my first meeting her, but Buddy the Fest Dog was absolutely beside himself with the possibility of getting a Joni autograph/tattoo with a liquid ink sharpie I had in my backpack. But alas, it was not to be, and Buddy is still tattoo-free. The exhibit is in NYC until October 6 (except Mondays) and there is hope that it will travel again to other cities. The film of the ballet was shown at the Sunshine Cinema last night for the invitees, and will next be shown on Bravo Canada late in October. If someone can record it, I will burn and distribute 50 free dvd copies, as I did with the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame recording earlier this year. One last thing. While I was in the gallery, I could see pedestrians walking down the sidewalk, seeing the name Joni Mitchell on the window and on the exhibit sign just inside the gallery, pausing for a second, and continuing to walk. I just wanted to grab them by the arm and pull them into the gallery and tell them they had no idea what they were missing. And there were some fans who took notice of my Siquomb shirt and now know that it's more than the name of her publishing company. But hasn't that been the case all these years? We who appreciate her for all her works are few in number compared to the general population. But that just makes us special, doesn't it? Goodnight everyone. Remember, "Bad dreams are good." This reminds me to share an experience I had last night while in my car with One Week Last Summer playing. I heard Joni singing it. I was just letting the song fill me, not concentrating on it... and my auditory brain filled in Joni singing. When I started to focus on the song, I realized she wasn't really singing. Our visual brain does this kind of thing - fills in what isn't there as it makes sense out of an image. I'd never caught this kind of auditory thing happening before. That's about the way I feel about "Shine." Great music and lyrics, but who's going to hear it? Is it going to shine on anybody's life to change their lifestyle? Once I get over that hump, I love this CD, but then again I've never not liked anything Joni has done musically. And she doesn't disappoint me here. Her opening song "One Week Last Summer" sets the stage for her muse. The song "Shine" is the absolute jewel. Love her lyric "Shine on another asshole, passing on the right." The picture of a lone ballerina under a street lamp just enforces her lyrics. Even someone like Joni who has grown into a cynical person from her early days of STAS thinks there could be a light at the end of the tunnel. Yes, it is a positive tone that she sings this song. Her rendition of "IF" does bring the poem up to date and acceptable to all age groups. Kipling is smiling in his grave. Musically and lyrically the CD is perfect! And yes, it does need to be heard on a home system----I just can't help but wonder how this CD would sound if Jaco was on it. WHOA!!!!!! Let me catch my breath. The artist only gets what's left over from record sales -- after all the other business folks involved in manufacturing, marketing and delivery get their (firm, set) pieces of the pie -- and often that ends up being a staggeringly small amount. Hence, one factor in Joni's denouncing of the record business as a "cesspool". So if you want to support Joni by sending as many $ her way as possible when you pay for her artistic creation, you might want to consider bypassing the discount stores and paying full retail at Starbucks. The additional $8 dollars or so that you might pay full retail is not much out of the ordinary buyer's pocket, but multiply that X 100,000's of buyers, and you're potentially removing a lot of income from an artist when fans buy the CD at a discount, even if she only receives a fraction of that amount after the record company has tallied up all their costs and paid themselves first. J Kate Bennett wrote: Therein lies all the fuzzy math that has put many an artist in debt. Because a profit is based on gross sales minus expenses. But the artist has no say so over the expenses. And the company can & has charged all manner of crazy expenses in the name of marketing & promotion which reduces the profit. >The recording artist also gets a royalty, maybe a dollar per album for an established artist. This money is only paid, however, once the album starts to generate a profit; that is, the record company loans the money to the artist, and doesn't give them anything until all their investment is paid back.< ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Sep 2007 00:28:09 -0400 From: Deb Messling Subject: RE: Shine Being in the anti-Kipling camp, I'm embarrassed by how much I like the song If.
