It's late, and I almost just spelled "previous" as "pervious." Oy. J-day is coming to a close, and I'm still Joni-jonesing. I went to the Starbucks near work the day before J-day to ask if they would be "participating," and after some questions hollered to the manager in the back room, they said, yeh, I guess so... I couldn't be there at 11am today, but I hit it at the crack of noon. They had the CD on the counter, but when I walked in, I could barely hear the music. I asked if they were playing Joni Mitchell, and pointed at the sign that announced they would be doing just that. Again, blank stares, and finally the manager, from the back room came out and said, "I think so." I found a quiet spot in the place, and indeed, I heard...something shining...I swooped down on it like a black crow. Bought my copy, but couldn't listen to it until I left work. Started to love it then. After I got home, I decided that I needed to take a drive and hear some more. My car is the best place to listen. I loved it more already...it grows on you fast. I can't wait for my morning commute. So far, like someone else said, I keep hearing the words, "If I had a heart, I'd cry," in my head. "Shine" and "If" are also my first favorites, but I know from experience that my initial faves may not end up being my long-time faves. It was a great thing to know that Jonilistas everywhere were scrambling for their chance to "Shine," and it's great to hear all of your stories. I was able to share my own little bit of joy with one person at work who thinks Joni is one of the greatest singer/songwiters of our time (fancy that!!!), and another woman who loves dance and loved the photos. BTY, I think the production of the CD is top rate. Makes me want to go see the ballet, and contibutes to the hopefulness/irrationality of the CD's theme. And so, we all SHINE on, like the moon and the stars and the sun... And I have been thinking, gosh, how I would have LOVED to have gone to my local Starbucks and heard some Joni. I might even have bought one of their over priced frothy things! I looked again at the you tube clip, and found Joni uttering some more words that have seemed to struck such a chord (one with a unique tuning, of course :~)) with me. It's when she says 'Rationally, I have no hope. Irrationally, I believe in miracles." Good words to hang on to, I think. Provoked out of a five-year musical retirement by the sideshow 'war against terror' while the world overboils, Joni Mitchell delivers a counter-intuitive, brilliant artistic response: she bestows upon our suicidal folly the blessing of serenity. Even her trademark suspended chords of doubt and inquiry enrich the reverie of long lyrical piano- led melody lines; her voice, partially restored to its full range by physical therapy, is never raised. And so you listen when you might otherwise turn off a tour -de-force title song which itemises humanity's irretrievably overdrawn account with a loving beauty that accepts it all without fear or rage. No less hushed and hallowed, If I Had a Heart, Bad Dreams are Good and Strong and Wrong also conjure the bitterest heresy that perhaps we as a species cannot but perish by our own grasping hands, so let us at least go to our doom gracefully. And Joni being Joni, among the 10 songs here she pointedly revisits her skittish Eco-dystopia of 1970, Big Yellow Taxi: you can't say she never warned us. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Sep 2007 06:43:54 -0400 From: "Marianne Rizzo" Subject: "Shine" - the packaging - I love it! >And wouldn't it be great to have a ballet dancer's >bum? Only to be castigated for his/her misspellings by "long-time Joni fans". I was hoping to read some of the JMDLers' review in amazon. There really is a group of people out there who is not aboard the JMDL who are big big fans of Joni. It would be great to hear their personal stories and how they encountered Joni if they ever hop aboard the Joni train. I got an email from a good friend/DJ late last night who asked me what I think of Shine - the album. He met Joni in Bel Air late last year in a resto. He just finished lunch and was standing outside the resto. He said he saw a lady come and knew right away that it was Joni who joined him in that same smoke-space. She asked him if he has a cigarette. My friend no longer smokes (or claims he doesn't) but not wishing to let go of the opportunity to speak to Joni, ran to the table where his friends still were lunching. Asked a cigarette from one and gave it to Joni. For the 10-15 minutes that they spoke, he said they never talked about music at all. Just about LA, the weather and other day-to-day concerns. I so envy him. But then I would probably be tongue-tied when I am in Joni's company. By the time I got to Starbucks #5, near home, the sky had cleared, so I pulled in. It's very small, but I knew they carried music. Still, I was a bit worried, based on stories I had already seen here. As I walked in, I was greeted by Joni's beautiful smile. They were not playing Joni, but she was prominently on display. The people there were all nice (I agree with those who say it's not fair to expect them to all be big Joni fans), and while they asked if I wanted anything else, they didn't seem bothered that I did not. I've played Shine twice. It seems to me that it takes off where TTT ended, moving forward musically, but having some similarities. Lyrically, I prefer her relationship songs, but she needs to write about what inspired her, so the political lyrics it is. I won't pretend that I think this is among her all-time best, but it's very good and I'm real happy with it. I prefer the slower tempo material. What a NICE day to spend an afternoon. I guess this CD will always have good associations for me because I listened to it on such a nice afternoon. Plus, for me, too, it's the first time I actually get a Joni CD on the day and not years or decades later. First, I like the CD. Secondly, I'm relieved, like Les, for two reasons. Some reviewers were talking about synthetic sound - to me it does not sound synthetic, except for on Hana and Night of the Iguana where the sound is very dense. Apart from those I love the sound precisely because it is not dense - I don't know if this makes sense to anyone but it is as if all the instruments get to stand out - they have clearly defined roles and enter and leave the stage with individual effects. Does anyone else think this sounds like storytellling or theatre or filmmaking? Especially One Week Last Summer. The other thing is that some reviewers have said she is old and sour. No, no, I don't think so. Despite the message, the music has a beautiful and positive quality to it. There is none of the frustrated, insulted anger of DED and Tlog. And she sings well. I don't hear he effects of that physiotherapy, although I guess her voice sounds slightly more elastic than on BSN. But maybe that's just because Joni is saner and in good spirits? That in itself is good news! I don' t know if all those positive messages on the list today and yesterday have some sort of contagious effect - everyone seems happy and hopeful...! Bene ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Sep 2007 12:25:52 EDT From: Merk54@aol.com Subject: Shine on a stereo Having first listened to Shine in my car (as well as the several available downloads on my computer prior to yesterday), I finally had the chance to sit down at home last night and play it on my home stereo. What an amazing difference this makes. The density of the sound really comes out, as does the intricate layering of all the sounds. There is a depth of sonic beauty to this recording that just isn't evident over computer speakers or even in a car system. Some of the songs as a whole still need to work their charms on me, but sonically, I think this is a great recording. People who are bummed about all the synths and drum machines, if you haven't listened to this recording on a good sound system, maybe doing so would change your opinion. Someone mentioned that Shine reminded them of TTT. I can agree with this comparison. I think the biggest difference is the switch from the VG8 to piano. I also hear the influence of Travelogue (the lush denseness of the sound). Looking forward to repeated listenings. So far I like most everything, but am struggling a little with Strong and Wrong. I also struggle a little with the closing of If - it seems disjointed from the rest of the song. I particularly like Shine and Night of the Iguana. I'm wondering what song people think would make a good choice for radio. I would love to call the local radio station and ask to play a song, but I'm wondering which one would be a smart choice. Any recommendations? Joni Mitchell created such a prescient roadmap for life and love in the 1960s and early '70s that everything since has felt cryptic by comparison. Fans realize they need to let her grow, but that's tough when she is venturing down sidestreets that are years beyond the fandom's ken. (Decades later her experimental work revealed itself to be rather on the mark). "Shine" is a grand return full of familiar imagery in the lyrics, delivered in non-rhyming phrases that force the listener to connect dots between the real and imaginary. "This Place," for example, deals with a bear going through the garbage cans and "the spirit of the water"; the ballad "Strong and Wrong" seemingly discusses the love of a man and woman and includes phrases such as "shock and awe" and "onward Christian soldiers." That one is a mystery. Mitchell, whose voice has deepened, continues to develop as a composer, framing the songs in keyboards and woodwinds, not so much writing melodies as she is creating textures, most of which suggest dark rooms in which the heavy drapes are occasionally pulled aside to reveal daylight. Much of the material is keenly formless, which helps set off the lyrics; on the few tracks in which she uses an acoustic guitar, "If" is the most solid example, the singer re-connects with the style that connected with listeners in the mid-70s. Slow moving seven-minute title track is a graceful tirade against technology, leadership, war and the consequences of so-called progress, but like so much of Mitchell's great work, there's a sense of hope that's there for anyone who choses to listen closely. I can't give a full, thorough review on this album as I've only listened to it twice so far (and looking forward to more!). I'm just so excited and extremely grateful to have a new Joni album in my hands. If I could tell Joni thanks (and make sure she hears me!) I would do so. She doesn't owe us anything and it is wonderful that she keeps on giving the greatest gift you could give to anyone--music. I will say it was fantastic yesterday listening to Shine on my headphones in my room. While the song, "Shine" was playing, the sun came peering in through the windows in my room and it made me smile really. The sun was shining on me while listening to Shine. Nice, eh? And I think it's great to read and see all the articles that have been written about Shine. I can barely keep up and that's a good thing! I go to the JMDL library everyday hoping for something new or looking for something new and my search doesn't go any further than clicking on the library page. There's so much to read, so much to absorb. I also think it's great to read all the posts here on the list. I love all the activity here and read each and every post written about Joni and Shine. I don't reply to everything (that'd be insane!) but I do read everything and I am enjoying everything I read. So thanks to you guys for giving such great insights on Joni and her music. So far, I am enjoying Shine but like I said I can't say much just yet. I need time to absorb this album as I would with any other album, and particularly any other Joni Mitchell album. I will say upon my first couple of listens I am seeing much potential in Shine, If, and If I Had A Heart, and Bad Dreams Are Good. I also think the opening track is beautiful with such subtle remnants of melancholy switching to hope and so forth. Now I read the reviews saying they wish Joni would have picked up her guitar more on the album. As a guitar girl myself, I can say I am not missing the guitar. That is no insult to Joni's playing (I love her playing man!) but more a compliment to the eloquence of her piano playing. The piano on the entire album is BEAUTIFUL. I wouldn't ask her to get up from the piano bench and strap her guitar on in place of any of the piano on the album. - -Monika ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Sep 2007 12:52:25 -0400 (EDT) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: My Ears are Shining - --- Susan Guzzi wrote: > Yes Jerry It's makes one feel like rejoicing! I am rejoicing as you continue to bathe > us and nurture us through our lives with your beauty > and art. > Y'know, when I read the lyrics when they were first posted, they didn't do much for me. When you add the music and Joni's improved voice (physiotherapy does that?), it all works out. In fact, now I'm kind of glad I did read the words first because I can listen to the words and music together without having to check the lyrics sheet, so the whole thing can just kind of wash over me. I like the review that someone posted (sorry, but I don't remember who - was it dovetusai in Italy? love that handle!) from the critic that used the words "serene" or "serenity" and "grace." Those are the impressions I get from this - that Joni has hope for the future, because she has to have hope. She has dedicated this work to her grandchildren. She could have gotten all angry and pissed off and full of bile and venom about the state the world is in, but she has chosen to see the beauty and try to accept the things she cannot change. I think that may be a function of growing older and wiser - you can see the folly of the world, but try to find the candles in the darkness. The majority of the negative reviews on Shine (or the less than welcoming ones anyhow) cite their disappointment in the album mainly because of the "anger" of the lyrics. Am I missing something? Are they missing something? It's not as if Joni says in the album, "fuck it, we've ruined the Earth, let's all give up." There is hope in the album. Take Shine and If for example. I see the album as indeed citing the problems of the world/the Earth/humanity but with glimmers of hope. The hope in this album outweighs the hopelessness. That's how I interpret it anyway. - -Mon ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Sep 2007 13:11:52 -0400 From: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Subject: Re: Shine Exactly my take. When I first read the lyrics - way back when - I thought this project was going to be incredibly dark. But when you match the words with the music and the production, it does come out much more hope than despair. Serious, to be sure, but hopeful. And I totally get what you mean about the density - it's a similar "orchestration" to songs like "Down To You" where you get to hear all the individual musical colors as opposed to having so much thrown at you at once. Her voice seems to work much better in this sparer setting. And speaking of C&S, am I the only one who hears some of the same piano figures on Shine that she debuted on that album?
