Shine - the song - does it for me. It literally gave me goose bumps. Love the way James Taylor adds his little guitar licks and gets Joni to lift her voice to a higher register in some parts. Love the LYRICS and the music. The song absolutely mesmerizes me. Its a true masterpiece, IMO. If a Grammy nomination comes her way, it sure would be cool if she would perform this song live at the Grammy's. Under these unusual circumstances, after my son called me to tell me that the places he had gone to had none, I was like, "What?!? I feel out of sync here and on the wrong page with the JMDL novel of our lives. Could this be happening only to me?" I thought I was the only one. Me, the doubter, called those two Shine-less Starbucks locations and one girl said it wouldn't be out at her location until October 3rd. The other girl at the other Starbucks doesn't know as much about music as she does her cafe lattes. I couldn't believe it. I called the downtown Starbucks where I know the manager, Brandy, is really cool, sweet and very helpful and it's the best place for music and she told me she had Shine but my son didn't want to deal with the parking hassles even though she gave him hints where to park. As usual, Borders doesn't usually carry what I want unless I put in an order. So, I'm thinking of going to Wal-Mart but I don't even know if they're carrying it. My son says, "Wait until tomorrow. It's late." My days begin at night, but I'm not in any Wal-Mart mode right now. I don't know where else to go. I guess I'll have to wait. So, it's just me, the moon, and the FM classical station, running behind the times. Enduring patience is all I can think to make sense of not having Joni's music with me on a day of one of her record's releases. There's a first for everything and this sure is a doozy one for me! All I can do now is look up at the clouds lit up by the moon and I just know that Nature, in all of it's majestic beauty, has a way that balances me out on days and nights like these. I think I'll put Clouds on. That'll work just fine. Jeannie Bryan wrote: Gosh, I was thinking it was just my local Starbucks missing the boat when I read that many of you encountered the same thing -- stores that hadn't stocked the CD and didn't have it behind the counter, dumbfounded clerks (some helpful, some condescending), and, finally, a copy of Shine found in the stockroom. So I think that they dropped the ball all over the country. Disappointing. Maybe they'll all have it stocked by the end of the week. But I think it's safe to say that the listening party scheduled for 11 to 2 was sort of a joke. To quote the clerk at one store, "We're the busiest Starbucks in the region, and they don't tell us anything." Anyway, now having heard Shine for the first time (on anything other than my tinny computer speakers), I have to say I love the music on this album (except for the drum machine on If I Had a Heart), it just "sounds like a Joni Mitchell album." The lyrics (the object of my earlier rant), are, often, not so hot. But I'm listening with an open mind, hoping to get past the "pedantic effrontery." No sign of it here, but there was a nice Joni mention in the weekly entetainment rag, Pariscope. In an interview with Herbie Hancock, the first question was:Why an album entirely dedicated to the music of Joni Mitchell? Is she one of your favourite artists? He replies: I've known Joni for a long time. We have always shared a mutual respect. She paints, she makes films, she studies philosophy and comparitive religions, she even produced a ballet and she is always concerned about the state of the world. But most of all, her writing is incredible. I went to the Starbucks near work the day before J-day to ask if they would be "participating," and after some questions hollered to the manager in the back room, they said, yeh, I guess so... I couldn't be there at 11am, but I hit it at the crack of noon. They were playing Shine and had the CD, but when I walked in, I could barely hear the music. I asked if they were playing Joni Mitchell, and pointed at the sign that announced they would be doing just that. Again, blank stares, and finally the manager said, "I think so." I found a quiet spot in the place, and indeed, I heard...something shining...I swooped down on it like a black crow. Bought my copy, but couldn't listen to it until I left work. Started to love it then. After I got home, I decided that I needed to take a drive and hear some more. My car is the best place to listen. I already loved it more...it grows on you fast. I can't wait for my morning commute. So far, like someone else said, I keep hearing the words, "If I had a heart, I'd cry," in my head. "Shine" and "If" are also my first favorites, but I know from experience that my initial faves may not end up being my long-time faves. It was a great thing to know that Jonilistas everywhere were scrambling for their chance to "Shine," and it's great to hear all of your stories. I was able to share my own little bit of joy with one person at work who thinks Joni is one of the greatest singer/songwiters of our time (fancy that!!!), and another woman who loves dance and loved the photos. BTY, I think the production of the CD is top rate. Makes me want to go see the ballet, and contibutes to the hopefulness/irrationality of the CD's theme. And so, we all SHINE on, like the moon and the stars and the sun...
