I hadn't realized today was the day.... I received a text message at 17:49, from Vinyl Lyd, saying they had received the ordered CDs by Joni Mitchell and Herbie Hancock. They were closing at 18:00 so I'll have to pick them up tomorrow. It's almost 22:00 here, so funny to think that while I'm sleeping all of you will be listening intensively... I'm almost certain I'll be dreaming about just that! The plan for tomorrow: maybe to go and pick up the CDs before I meet my trainer at 11:00, he helps me with a back problem, and then flash the bag around until he asks me what music I've bought, so that at least I get to share the news with one other person... cause I'm not seeing anyone tomorrow. I haven't decided on when to listen yet... A crazy many of you will be listening right now, it's so weird. Have a good listen! I got Shine, Herbie Hancock's River and a belated purchase of the tribute album from earlier this year. The regular price on these was $18.99 with the sale price being $14.99 so it was great to pay only $9.99 each. If you don't have a card you should get one as they send coupons for different discounts all the time. I'm so sorry I didn't get this info out to you sooner. I liked the packaging of Shine a lot and the picture of the earth on the CD looks cool. As with many a Joni album it takes a few listens to get into it for me sometimes. I think that is the case with this one. After just one listen in the car I'm not loving it but I'll give it some time. It's just wonderful to have something new from Joni. And this store isn't particularly well known. I was waiting for either someone to say, "Wow, this is great music, who is this?" or to hear someone walk up to the counter and say, "Who is this? I hate this music, turn it off!" Well, for myself, I enjoyed it and am thankful Starbucks played so much great stuff from her catalog . although they never played one track from Shine. Hi Ya'll, I did some more Shine shopping this afternoon, and the two Starbucks I went into didn't even have it out. I asked for it in the first Starbucks, and the guy said the date for it to come out hasn't happened yet, and then he looked at the computer screen and said...oh no! it's today! So he thanked me for asking and brought it out immediately. He talked about Joni's ballet as he was unwrapping the CD display thingy, and when I asked how he knew about the ballet, he said they have a video the employees watch to educated them about the CD's they sell. He was a young guy, late teens or early twenties. Impressive. I asked him to play it overhead, and he said sure. When he turned it on, "Impossible Dreamer" started playing. It was nice to hear, but I had to wonder where was Shine? Maybe they have a Joni composite for playing overhead or something. The next Starbucks didn't have it out either so I asked where the hell is it? (More southern kindly though hell was on my mind.) First they said it was on the display carousel, but I knew it wasn't because I'd already looked. I said isn't it supposed to be out on the counter in it's own display? Then they said it hadn't come to them yet. I have to wonder if they just hadn't opened it in back. Whatever the Starbucks sales talleys are, things like might be happening in other Starbucks too and skew the numbers. Two out of three today didn't have it out. Best Buy here didn't have it except online. I did find it at another central Arkansas Walmart I visited. It was out in the normal Joni area of the contemporary music rack. They guy indicated it wasn't on the new release rack because they only had 3 copies. When I left they only had 2. I brought one to my sister-in-law who owns and art gallery. She put it on overhead right away. I went to the racks on the left hand side of the store where the black music is looking for Me'Shell...not there either. OK, so it's on to the artist's separate bins, where I found Joni (they had a couple, not on sale and priced at $16.99), Me'Shell was in the "Rock" section (which is OK by me as I think she rocks) on sale for $13.99 and Nellie McKay on sale for $11.99, so I was happy. When I checked out I asked the guy if they had received any promotional stuff for Shine that I could have. They did not, but he did give me lots of other freebies (all NJC). I'm particularly partial to the post C&S period as well as to the Geffen years. NRH and TI are my favorites and represent, for me, the apex of her creative powers -- thus far -- as a musician and communicator. I was eagerly anticipating this date: the release of SHINE, and the thought of hearing new work by JM unleased in me a well of sentimentality; fond memories of buying a new JM release and rushing home to relentlessly listen to and digest each song. Each of those release-date-days was almost like a holiday. Well, for whatever reason, that's mostly all gone. I find SHINE, like TTT and TRAVELOGUE before it, to be disappointing. It's not that I find the text of the songs to be negative and sanctimonious, which so often seems to be the complaint of reviewers. In fact, I believe her take on the state of the world to be sadly spot-on (and the tragedy is that most people don't really seem to care). The problem is that her verbal eloquence has diminished...Perhaps I'm just another bitter, aging, unhappy misanthrope, but I miss the boat with SHINE. Musically and lyrically, it is, like TTT, half-baked; inconsistent in quality....love IGUANA, SHINE, IF but most everything else is a rephrased revisiting of past observations that were so much more articulately stated on, say, DOG EAT DOG. Since Starbucks is basically the reasonB this new JoniB disc saw the light of day (no pun intended), I figured Ibd stop at the one directly on my route home from work to buy Shine b I walked in, lookedB on all the countersb& and the music carousel... and didnbt see it. I asked the nice youngB barista, whoB looked puzzledb& and then apologetic b bwe definitely have the CD, but I just forgot to put it out!b. I politely but emphatically told the guy, bthis is a very big deal b itbs been ten years since JoniB recorded an album of all-new material. Starbucks all over the country were celebrating the occasion today between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. - I canbt believe I am the first person asking for it, at 6:00 p.m. on the release date.b He pointed to a 7b x 9b poster confirming what I had just statedB b rather than treat me like an obsessive-compulsive fan, he seemed to understand. He called someone else to staff theB register while he went in search, coming back with one for me and a handful to display front and center, temporarily replacing something else b I then asked him what theybd be doing with the poster after today. So I think that they dropped the ball all over the country. Disappointing. Maybe they'll all have it stocked by the end of the week. But I think it's safe to say that the listening party scheduled for 11 to 2 was sort of a joke. To quote the clerk at one store, "We're the busiest Starbucks in the region, and they don't tell us anything." Anyway, now having heard Shine for the first time (on anything other than my tinny computer speakers), I have to say I love the music on this album (except for the drum machine on If I Had a Heart), it just "sounds like a Joni Mitchell album." The lyrics (the object of my earlier rant), are, often, not so hot. But I'm listening with an open mind, hoping to get past the "pedantic effrontery."
