They don't even mention any CDs on their website www.starbucks.com.au They did respond to my email and told me they would release Shine through their stores in October. I haven't been into a Starbucks in some time so, I don't know if their CDs are on display. The last time I went to one, they had some CDs on the counter but didn't see Paul McCartney's CD there. Nor the Joni compilations. It's odd that they don't even have a music section on their website. Mark in Sydney NP National Nine News ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Sep 2007 10:44:14 +0100 From: "Anita Tedder" Subject: Joni, the Catholic Church and me Having been off list for a while (pressure of work and too many emails) I realised I couldn't possible be off list on the day that 'Shine' finally is released. I felt like I was missing old friends and what a day to get myself back in the groove! A lot of my emails, when I have posted, have been about synchronicity, me and the music of Joni. Loads of things - seeing Joni in 1970 talking about being in Crete with her friend Penny and I'd just come back from Crete with my friend Penny. Meeting Joni in Paris through an amazing sequence of the strangest coincidences. More recently, talk here about gardens, weeding and dragonflies - and then a dragonfly (never seen in my garden) landing on the Joni post I'd printed (was it from Laura?)There are loads of things - but then there's my first one back on list on this MOST auspicious 'Shine' day about Joni and the Catholic Church. I like to think of myself as searching for a bit of spiritual understanding (like a fair few on this list :~)) - but really think I'm a bit of an existentialist. I don't really believe in a God - but, at the same time, I look to moments of synchronicity to hopefully point the way to there being something more. Maybe there's a Great Spirit or a Great Mystery, I tell myself. Then I come back to thinking it's my fear of Death and mortality that keep me desperately hoping that there is something more. I need a sense of purpose and meaning to my life. One way I try to create some meaning is through some work for an organisation which supports survivors of abuse by the (Catholic) Christian Brothers. Recently, an event happened that has left me bereft for one of the people I was supporting. As a result, I have found myself feeling raging with the Catholic Church, raging with Life for being so unfair - and also full of grief. I decided I needed to do something to help myself. I felt I needed some space and some time to contemplate. To go myself on some kind of retreat to escape from this craziness. I found locally, a place that runs such retreats. Two weeks ago, I went and talked to a Sister there and I ended up pouring out all my grief and rage to this Catholic nun. She fully received all I had to say and I could see the tears in her eyes about what had happened through the hands of those members who purport to be of the same faith as her. She told me that, in her life, she is reaching out to other faiths and what happened to the person I knew was terrible. She offered no excuses nor had she any explanations. We both sat together and struggled with the enormity of it all. She was very, very kind and offered me a place on a week-end retreat on 5th October with her order and some Buddhist nuns. We are going to be looking at Mindfulness and Meditation. What's so strange to me is that the headquarters of the sisters' order is that it is very close to where my Mother was born in Belgium and my Mother tells me the first day of the retreat would have been my (Catholic) Belgian Great Grandmother's 127 birthday. So here I am struggling with me and the Catholic Church. Then I come back today to this list and find a lot of talking about themselves, Joni and the Catholic Church. Is it just co-incidence? Am I attaching significance to a random sequence of events because I can't ultimately cope with my demise? Maybe. What I am certain of and, for me, the music of Joni has always underlined, it's the same with all religions. The Catholic Church contains some terrible abusers and some wonderful (like the sister I saw) people. Same with the Moslems, same with the Hindus, same with every religion the World over. Same with me. All religions and all Life is made up of struggling people trying to find a way through. The result is that sometimes some people do some awful things and sometimes some people do wonderful things. More often, we all do a bit of both. I can only find tolerance and peace in myself and do the best I can and try not to hurt people along the way. After all, people will tell you where they've gone and they'll tell you where to go, but till you get there yourself, you never really know. What very wise woman said that? With love to all. So does everyone have their day tomorrow all mapped out? I drew a map of Starbucks, with Joni's face sketched on it twice. Yep. I called Starbucks of Mansfield today to make sure they have the CD (yes, but it won't be released until tomorrow) and that they will be doing the 3 hour thing, and the young man said yes. Yes! I told a bunch of friends and co-workers that if they want me I'll be in the Starrrrrrrbucks from 11 a.m. and until 2 p.m. I mean, how can a Joni person actually *work* when only a mile away they'll be playing three hours of solid Joni? I'll bring some work but probably won't work. I told people that I will be holding court and spark there and that if they want to stop by in between classes I will buy them a drink. Our secretary Mary, who is usually so patient w/ my JMOCD but has seen it building up for weeks said: "I'm not going any where NEAR that place. Are you kidding?" When I told my son Chris (the great Joni-teaser) that Starbucks is playing 3 hours of Joni he shot back: "They don't want any business for three hours? What, are they going to wash the floor for three hours?" (Bratty kid. I said: "Get down off of there!") When I went out to the quick lunch stand today I finally *came out* to the owner, Lizzie of Lizzie's Curbside Cuisine. I asked her if she liked Joni Mitchell, and she said "Oh, yeah. I remember her!" So I told her how she is coming out of retirement with a new CD and Lizzie said: "I'd go see her!" and I said: "Oh, no. We don't know anything about a tour yet!" and then went on to tell her about this list and about "the quick lunch stand" and "Proud headed Queen Lizzie" lyrics and how I've written to the list about her quick lunch stand and she was touched by that. She said: "Wow, it's so nice to see someone so passionate about something! Have fun tomorrow!" (She probably shook her head after I left and joked with customers who were behind me in line, but I don't care.) I hope some of our grad students stop by so I can share the joy. If not, maybe I will find someone else to spark with. Or just sit in dark cafe. N'importe quoi. I really wanted to write a new "Night Before Christmas" today, but time and good fortune would not allow. Very busy at work, plus I have 3 dear friends in the hospital (one getting a triple-bypass, another with breast cancer surgery, and another getting a diagnosis) and a 24 year-old kid in town (a former baseball teammate of my younger son) committed suicide. I've been doing a lot of laughing and crying today. Very both sides now, so please forgive me if I am more ooby shooby than usual. Enjoy tomorrow and the second coming of SIQUOMB, Joniamigos. Thank you for taking me as I am. Thank you for your presence and for being here and everything. Thank you very much! Carpe CDiem! While it has become a children's song in later years, it's history is very much as an adult song. I am sure that Joni is being ironic, employing a religious song that played a role in activism for good contrasted with the cynical and hypocritical ways in which religion is deployed in our present culture. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Sep 2007 08:55:21 -0400 From: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Subject: Re: shine Or as I've been referring to it - "J-day", celebrating Joni's album, Herbie's album, Chaka's album (with the Joni cover). I figure, if I'm going to support Joni's decision to record for them (and I do), I might as well go all out. Besides, somehow I find buying it there amusing. As for Herbie, not today, but I do think I want it--ESPECIALLY after hearing his beautiful interpretation of BSN. To those who have criticized him I would say that this isn't a Joni tribute album so much as it's a Herbie album INSPIRED by Joni. What he did to BSN is what jazz musicians do to standards. In new census data released Wednesday, Statistics Canada reported huge gains in common-law relationships among people in their 40s and over in the past five years. Monika was right... $13.88. It wasn't out on display! The guy had to look through some boxes of CD's, boxes and boxes. I asked for 5 copies thinking I'd get it at $9.72, but he only had 3 copies so I took one. I still thought I'd get if for $9.72 at the register, but nope. The cashier lady at Walmart said I could probably get it cheaper at Best Buy so I left it at the cash register and went to Best Buy, but it wasn't open yet. So I went across the street to Starbucks knowing it would be more expensive but wanting to see it there. $15.95. Fun to see all the copies they had there. I ended up buying it at another Walmart in Little Rock. They had about 6 copies the guy said. All the while I was talking to my friend Annette who was calling Walmarts in Rochester, NY and they all said you can only get it online, not in their stores. I'm still on the phone with Annette (Marianne's sister) in Rochester. Now she's calling Kmart.. the guy got lost looking for them. Now she called House of Guitars, and they had 10 copies at $14.98 each. Now she's calling FYE, plenty of copies for $14.99 each. I'll be SHINE shopping more today. I have a copy ordered on Amazon.com too. When I opened up the CD cover, the inside was so striking. Very awesome! I can still say I'm the only person who's never stepped foot in a Starbucks. I had a gift certificate at B & N and got "Shine," Herbie Hancock's, and Chaka's. Shine was on sale for $15.99 (not much of a sale), but still wanted to use the gift certificate. I've heard most of the snippets from "Shine," but just had my first full listen. BEAUTIFUL!!! I never thought this day would happen, and it's so much better than TTT. There are some songs I like more than others, but I'll be listening to "Shine" over and over today. I'll hold off on Herbie & Chaka for a couple of days. Don't want to blow a fuse. The packaging is beautiful, and I love all the ballet photographs.....espcecially the "Stalker" ballet dancer. It's kind of like "Underneath the Streetlight." I wonder who the ballet dancer is stalking. Back for listen number two! I grabbed the cd, ordered an iced tea and a marshmallow square. I walked in 10 minutes before 11 and the end of the song Shine was playing with If following. I gave the cd to the cashier and she said, "Joni Mitchell, alright! Do you want a bag?" which I denied and she said, "oh you're just going to pop it right into the cd player huh?" which I responded by telling her I was going to be at Starbucks for a little while listening. Anyway, I sat down and listened to If while reading thinking the album was going to restart at 11. At 11 they played Woodstock followed by Barangrill. I then realized they weren't playing the new album again! I decided to stay for a little while and heard songs like Chelsea Morning, Coyote, Harry's House, Don Juan's Reckless Daughter, Just Like This Train, a couple of songs from the 90's I suspect that I was not familiar with, Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire, etc etc. I did enjoy hearing all these Joni songs in a store but at 12 I was getting a little eager to listen to the album and left. Here I am now just signing on for a minute and hopefully will soon listen to Shine. I promised my brother I would help him cook pasta so I have to do that still first. The things we have to do for Joni...sheesh...(kidding of course!) - -Monika P.S. I was the only to buy Joni so far as I could tell since the tray of cds was full until I bought one. I was the only one there for the listening as everyone else was coming and going and the couple of people who were there for the time were on laptops with no Shine in their hands. Yes, I looked. ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Sep 2007 17:14:09 +0000 From: waytoblue@comcast.net Subject: Shine day I picked up my copy of Shine this morning at the Starbucks by the music school where I usually get a hot cup of coffee in the morning. Plus it all evens out in the long run...I ordered the new Herbie Hancock and Mark Knopfler from Amazon, paying no tax plus saving a few dollars anyway...so what's a couple of dollars more? The first track is playing and I love it so far. I wasn't really even thinking about it yesterday so it makes it kind of nice today, more like a pleasant surprise. Plus, I just found out my evening choir practice was cancelled today so I can go home at 3 instead of 7pm...so I should be able to get a lot of listening in! There was a HUGE lineup at the cash and they only had two clerks on cash at the time (they added more within 10 minutes.) You'd think they were all getting Shine, right? The wait in line (maybe 15 minutes) was actually quite pleasant, though, because I got to talk to the people in line before and behind me. The two self-professed geeks just behind me were there for Halo 3. I jokingly asked them if there were going to be any video-game fights as there often are when new games, or at least new gaming systems, are released, but one guy said, "No - we're all geeks. Bless Joni, or her creative director, for creating a CD package with a type-face and font that is legible! the little booklet with lyrics is wonderful - even though it's white type on a black background, the font size is excellent. Even with my horrible eyesight, I can read this without any problem. Little things mean a lot - someone was either very lucky in their design, or thought of this. One of my main beefs with CDs in general is that the printed material you get in most of them is completely unreadable, often in a tiny and very faint font, not to mention the ones that decide to get cute and run the type all the way across the package, or around in circles, so that it drives your eyes crazy. And wouldn't it be great to have a ballet dancer's bum?
