I'm waiting for a record store to call me and tell me Shine and Rive have arrived! This is a little independent one, it seems that the record is being distributed via the regular channels here (in Denmark that is). The guy behind the counter lit up in a smile when I said 'there's a new record by Joni Mitchell...' and he said: yes, we are sure looking forward to it! Some salesman had been there and played a song for them and the guy said 'it sounded really really good'. I said, 'well, some of us are awaiting it with mixed emotions, not everything she has made recently was convincing...'. 'Oh but as long as she makes records...!' said the guy. Today my newspaper, Berlingske Tidende, gives Shine four stars out of six, same as 19-year-old Scottissh debutante Amy McDonald. Another reviewer on the same page gives Devendra Banhard five stars and four to Jose Gonzalez, a Swedish-Argentinian singer and guitarist. The review goes: Five years ago Joni Mitchell said a sour good-bye to the music industry that had put her on a throne of gold in the late sixties and early seventies. In stead, she wanted to paint. But the changing of the times and a growing indignation over war and death made the now 64-year-old singer and songwriter return to the piano and guitar. Considering Mitchell's educational journeys into almost all the main musical genres, it is less of a surprise that she mixes jazz and pop in small and simple as well as big and bombastic arrangements on Shine with her cigarrette-rusty, experienced voice. The pearl of the rather fine collection of new songs plus a re-recording of "Big Yellow Taxi" is the divinely beautiful, gentle title song, whose musical grace is in stark contrast with the nearly brutal, ironic text-accompaniment. A modern protest-song cannot be be cut more elegantly. ... actually, 'elegantly' is not the right word, but I couldn''t find a better one. 'flot' means handsome, impressive, lavish... Hi All I am in the hospital waiting room waiting for Freda to come out of the OR after surgery. The doctor came out and says that she did great and it's all good. I have been meaning to post what is going on with me for a while and have just been too damn busy. There is just not enough time. I was in Miami last week to do a fundraiser for the Ruth Paz Foundation. Our Burn Hospital is nearly completed and we anticipate a December inauguration. You can check out the new web site at ruthpaz.com I flew from there to Austin Texas to attend the Austin City Limits Fest. The first day I was walking thru the crowd talking to someone and walked right past Happy The Man and he heard my voice and called out to me. So cool. I managed to spend just a few minutes with "Texas Tush" Donna and her friend and it was great to see them. I wish we could have had a little mini fest, but too much going on. I was able to catch a couple of bands including Wilco and got to spend some time with my friend Patrick who plays keys and guitar for them. Also checked out a band with Joseph Arthur and I really loved their set. Afterwards backstage I found out that my friend Greg Wiz from New Orleans is playing drums with the band. Check out their stuff it is REALLY good. Also caught Damien Rice and a little Dylan before we ran off and caught PBS from New Orleans down on 6th Street. I managed to catch most of Jesse Malin's set on Rosalitas recommendation. He was really good. I caught most of Crowded House and a little Kelly Willis, and Bela Fleck. It's a really cool festival and I would love to go back there. The night that PHJB played on Sunday I was suppose to be in Hollywood receiving a Shining Star Award along with songwriters John Flynn and Kris Kristofferson. We were all honored for our work on the forthcoming documentary called "Not Broken" about Katrina. I was the Music Producer on the film as well as composer of soundtrack material. It was alot of fun and it was such an honor to be recognized for my work. I have been asked to do another film with Pluma Pictures and I can't wait to get started. Kakki was suppose to stand in for me and accept the award and of course could not because of her horrible accident. Sending healing beams her way today. I thought it have been so cool Kakki sitting at a table with Kris and John. It was such a beautiful picture in my head. But alas... To add injury to injury, Kris walked into a wall and hurt himself badly and was not able to attend either. John Flynn represented tho and sand his song from the movie "New Orleans (Passunder)" and got a standing ovation. Pretty cool stuff. Next weekend I am in Kansas City and then Huntsville, Alabama (by way of Nashville) so if anybody wants to come out and see the shows let me know. I am all over in October and have plans to meet up with several people already so check the schedule. I love the new Herbie record alot and I think Joni sounds great. I also love the new Shine album very much. My fave is the opening cut. Ah Joni playing piano again. You see Lama I told you she would be back. I would love to know what synth she is using cause alot of the sounds are so much like my Yamaha Motif 8. I can't wait till next week and go out and buy the actual releases. Go Joni go! Her boys didn't lie to me when they told me how wonderful it is. I am sure some people will have trouble with it at first, but I think this is great work on her part both musically as well as lyrically. I just hope she falls in love again soon. I am currently working on Jack Neilson's second album that I hope to release early next year. I am also mastering a double album from the Ogden After Hours series that I recorded over the last 2 years. This is a music series put on by the Ogden Museum of Southern Art (http://www.ogdenmuseum.org/education/ogden_after_hours.html) every thursday night. I have been working on this series whenever I am in town since just after Katrina. Last night we had two music giants. Dickie Landry and Jon Smith. They both played with Phillip Glass at one time (mostly Dickie though) and Jon played with Edgar Winters White Trash. When Jon told his grandmother he was going to be playing with all the band and named all of his friends that were going to be in the band she said "what a bunch of white trash!". They were really nice and very funny. Check out Jon's discography )http:// www.jonrsmith.com/discography.htm) That's all for now. Hope all are well. And that is coming from a great artists herself. I always liked Chaka most especially her forays in jazz. She did a superb jazz album in the early 80s with people like Chick Corea backing her and in the interview segment at the end of the CD, she seems unable to realize that her talent is huge, immense, titanic. I thought her Man From Mars is outstanding. She delved into vocal nuances that I didn't quite realize was in the song until she sang it. I like Kristen Vigard and Jacqui Dankworth, but if I may be brazen enough to say this, I think Chaka's MFM version is the best cover. Jack http://www.chicagotribune.com/entertainment/music/chi-0920chakakhan_fillsep20,1,5630691.story Chaka Khan's new CD traces her artistic arc Artists who inspired Khan throughout the early chapter of her career also figure into the fold on "Funk This." Here's a clue to one of them: "Don Juan's Reckless Daughter" (1977). More than a handful of listeners hail Joni Mitchell's sprawling two-record set as a bold musical experiment and innovative exploration of sonic vistas. In the company of guests such as Wayne Shorter and Jaco Pastorius, you hear Khan infuse "Dreamland" and "The Tenth World" with vocal pyrotechnics. It was the first of several musical moments over the next 30 years where the talents of Khan and Joni Mitchell intersected, leading up to "Funk This." Idol worship Khan's idolatry of Mitchell almost renders her speechless: "That woman ... let me tell you, there is no one like her on the planet. She's the best. I want to be like her when I grow up. "I kind of fell off the train for maybe 10 years and then Phoebe Snow brought me back to her again. In fact, just before I recorded 'Ladies Man,' I was still in the studio, and Joni was being inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in Toronto. She invited myself and Herbie Hancock. We did a funky, beautiful, amazing rendition of [Mitchell's] 'Help Me.' "I talked to her after the show ... and I told her that I wanted to do 'Two Grey Rooms' [from Mitchell's "Night Ride Home"] -- that's my song. I play it for people and it's like, 'When did you do that?' They really think it's like me singing that song! We have weird kindred spirits. She said, 'No, no, Chaka, no. Don't do 'Two Grey Rooms.' You've got to do 'Ladies Man.' I said, 'You're right. Let me get that out of my system. I'll do 'Ladies Man.'" A Jimi Hendrix tune also gets a reworking of simmering properties on "Funk This." Jam and Lewis keep the patina of psychedelic soul in the foreground on "Castles Made of Sand" while Khan invokes the cool nuances of Hendrix's performance, mixing in her own trademark vocal arrangements to the material. Like Joni Mitchell and Miles Davis, Hendrix stands as one of Khan's most important musical influences. Many would agree with her assessment: "He's the greatest guitar player that ever lived. Period. He's a fantastic poet. He is an amazing lyricist -- prophetic. Listen to some of his words," she implores. ________________________________________________________________________ Email and AIM finally together. It created many feelings in me that I'd like to share. By the way, I have not read Monika's post. Jim, you are so on target when you wrote "our parents are not God and can be beaten by forces of nature". I feel that we may so deeply want our parents to be almost supernatural and as we grow older we become so much more aware that our parent are PEOPLE just like everyone else. We all have different talents and different coping skills and this list could continue but I think you know where I am heading. What "Springsteen said ("Things'll knock you down you don't even see coming") is so accurate. And what Wm. Wordsmith said ("reality is half created, half perceive") is full of wisdom. My father was a healthy, athlete (was signed up to be a professional pitcher) who had a horrible life-long problem(s) from World War 11. The details are not as important as how I watched him deal with chronic pain and physical limitations. He just accomplished, against all odds, amazing things and most of all I never once heard him complain. I'm so aware that having my dad as a role model has had a profound impact on my life. Each of us has the right to have our personal perceptions and reactions to all that life brings our way. Our age is certainly a factor to be considered as we travel through the life cycles, each bringing many challenges. And each of us has personal coping skills and find comfort in unique ways. I think all of us understand the multiple joys that Joni shares and has helped many of us through rough times. I sure know this is the case with my battles!!!!!! We SHARE our reactions, perceptions and so many other personal thoughts on our Digest family. That's magic because it is so rare that we all can agree to disagree without consequence. From 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, more than 6,500 Starbucks stores in the U.S. and Canada will participate in the event by playing Shine along with a retrospective of classics which have made Mitchell one of the most beloved singer/songwriters of our time. Lunch and Listen gets to the heart of the connection between Starbucks customers and music, says Ken Lombard, president of Starbucks Entertainment who also oversees Hear Music. Were very proud of this record and on September 25, Mitchells timeless resonance will be felt in a very profound way. Born out of a burst of creative energy, Shine is one of three new artistic endeavors launched by Mitchell this year. The first, The Fiddle and the Drum, a ballet based on Mitchell's music, debuted with the Alberta Ballet in Calgary earlier this year with Mitchell serving as co-creator and artistic director. The second is a politically charged visual art exhibit by Mitchell that will debut in New York in the fall. In addition, Joni Mitchell fans can also tune in to watch her on some of televisions most distinguished shows including CBS Sunday Morning (air date TBA), Charlie Rose (air date TBA) and Tavis Smiley (air date TBA). Shine will be available at Starbucks locations and traditional music retail outlets in the U.S. and Canada on September 25 and in global markets the week of September 24. Described by Mitchell as as serious a work as Ive ever done, Shine presents beautiful melodies, dark lyrics and a sparseness that recalls and even progresses beyond some of Mitchells most seminal recordings. Shine is already receiving glowing accolades from the press: her songs are great not just for their erudite lyrics, daring compositional elements or Mitchell's bravado performances but because of the way all those elements interact. - -Ann Powers, Los Angeles Times this is the best album by an artist of her generation since Bob Dylans Modern Times. - - Pierre Perrone, Independent (UK) It all shines, trulythe most accessible album shes made in some time. - -Thomas Conner, Chicago Sun Times ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Sep 2007 13:16:50 -0700 From: "Kate Bennett" Subject: counter tops OOPPSS! A galley-style kitchen is adjacent to the open-concept living/dining room, which offers sliding door access to the balcony. This spot will be great for entertaining. The bedroom is bathed in natural light from windows along two walls, so spectacular views will be part of this suite owners life morning and night. Performance royalties are those paid to the songwriter or publisher when their works are broadcast or performed (in theory but in truth only the top sellers get paid) Musicians usually get paid by the song or hour for their contributions to a track. The percentage you mentioned is called a mechanical license- when someone wants to record someone's song they pay a license to do so (if the song is available for license) which amounts to a percentage of each unit sold with that song on it. > There are performance royalties that every musician is paid who plays on the album and there is the gold--the songwriting royalties (that's where the $$$ is). Last time I checked, a songwriter gets 8 1/2 cents per track for every album sold--in terms of the songwriting royalties. Don't quote me on that exact amount as it has fluctuated a bit up and down through the years. If not 8 1/2 cents, then right around there. - - -Monika < ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Sep 2007 17:05:10 -0700 From: "Kate Bennett" Subject: Re: shine at walmart Therein lies all the fuzzy math that has put many an artist in debt. Because a profit is based on gross sales minus expenses. But the artist has no say so over the expenses. And the company can & has charged all manner of crazy expenses in the name of marketing & promotion which reduces the profit. >The recording artist also gets a royalty, maybe a dollar per album for an established artist. This money is only paid, however, once the album starts to generate a profit; that is, the record company loans the money to the artist, and doesn't give them anything until all their investment is paid back.< ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Sep 2007 17:16:04 -0700 (PDT) From: Bob Muller Subject: Upcoming NPR Special http://www.paulingles.com/mitchell.html Scroll down to the bottom...yeah, I know some of those guys... They are giving her more promotion than she's gotten in decades from Geffen or Nonesuch and I for one think that's a good thing. But then we buy coffee from Starbucks all the time in this house (Travis won't drink any other brand) so I guess I ain't exactly the most pc person in the world. I also think the so-called 'judges in black and white' are thrashing the whole 'she flamboyantly trashed the music business and said she was getting the f*ck out of it' thing to death. Who cares as long as she's creating again? Yeah, Joni likes to talk big and exaggerate a bit. She's a big talent. She's larger than life. Or at least the persona she shows the public is. Personally her outspoken, sometimes hyperbolic public pronouncements are part of what I love about her. > > In addition, Joni Mitchell fans can also tune in to watch her on > some > of televisions most distinguished shows including CBS Sunday > Morning > (air date TBA), Charlie Rose (air date TBA) and Tavis Smiley (air > date TBA). > I can't wait to see Joni on Charlie Rose! Delicate overture "One Week Last Summer" could be an outtake from 1977's underrated Don Juan's Reckless Daughter," while the clattering "Night of the Iguana" calls to mind her peerless 1976 release, Hejira. And if anyone is going to do a pleasant-if-pointless revamp of "Big Yellow Taxi," it might as well be the woman who wrote it."
