Here's a woman who at the height of her powers could populate her albums with world class musicians, and who was a very tidy rhythm guitarist herself. On this song, she can't even be bothered to play rhythm guitar! Instead she's opted for a set of ugly synthesised guitar samples. Ughh. Unlistenable. Speaking as someone who has more albums by Joni Mitchell in his collection than any other single artist, I hope the lyrics are fantastic, I couldn't get that far. Martin. For darker, knottier and more richly textured sonic experiences of the times, you turn to the Doors or Bob Dylan or Joni Mitchell or Jimi Hendrix or Janis Joplin. Or all of them. For an escapist dose of the sweet sound of youth brimming with hope that the world is going to change tomorrow, you listen to "Hair" and let the sunshine in." ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Sep 2007 03:12:33 -0700 (PDT) From: Bob Muller Subject: Re: I Don't Know Where I Stand on Prairie Home Companion J, thanks for that - it was the first mention of it that I've seen. I'll keep my eye on the archives and hope that it becomes available. It's one of my favorite Joni songs, always makes a good choice for a cover. Just saw (only half-listening) a quick story on CNN about painting flowers on big yellow taxis in NYC. (I always turn that on to get a portrait of today.) I think they said it was for some children's organization (portraitofhope.com, but that came up empty for me.) Maybe they are flowers of deep feeling? Sorry for the inchoateness. I'm late for Morning UConn Town. xo, pp _________________________________________________________________ Capture your memories in an online journal! http://www.reallivemoms.com?ocid=TXT_TAGHM&loc=us ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Sep 2007 10:31:35 -0500 From: "mia _" Subject: re: I Don't Know Where I Stand on Prairie Home Companion I heard this one yesterday in my car. I was pushing radio buttons kinda fast, blew by NPR, then went, "Wait, did she just sing '...where I stand'"? So I went back and sure enough! I love how the dobro sounds in that song. Very moving. After the song ended, Keillor started chatting about summer ending and winter moving in, and I was hoping maybe we are going to hear "Urge for Going" or better yet, a whole segment devoted to Joni songs. No such luck! :( I've been listening to Clouds lately. I haven't for a long time though, thinking that kind of music doesn't apply to someone my age anymore. But I just recently had a bad breakup of a six year relationship (I'm a complete wreck!) and Clouds seems to be helping me through this hard hurtful time. Is Clouds the album for lonely (and perhaps pathetic) single girls? I keep saying to myself that because my ex never wanted to go to Jonifest with me, we were never cut out for each other anyway - right? ; ) Mia <> _________________________________________________________________ Share your special parenting moments! http://www.reallivemoms.com?ocid=TXT_TAGHM&loc=us ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Sep 2007 12:38:11 -0500 From: Michael Paz Subject: Fwd: Preview Herbie's Latest Album "River: The Joni Letters" At LiveDaily.com and Win! Preview Herbie's Latest Album "River: The Joni Letters" At LiveDaily.com and Win! Head over to www.livedaily.com/herbiehancock and be one of the first to hear the full album, which the New York Times says "delivers an intimate reinvention issuing from someplace deep inside the music." Describing the great work of Herbie's core band on the record (Herbie, sax genius Wayne Shorter, drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, bassist Dave Holland and guitarist Lionel Loueke), the Times goes on to say: They also support a handful of vocalists, ranging from the wistful young singer-songwriters Corinne Bailey Rae and Norah Jones (on "River" and "Court and Spark" respectively) to the spectral poet- songwriter Leonard Cohen ("The Jungle Line"). Tina Turner takes a mesmerizing turn on "Edith and the Kingpin," while the Brazilian jazz singer Luciana Souza offers a respectful "Amelia." Then there is Ms. Mitchell herself. "If shebs not a jazz singer, I donbt know who is," Mr. Hancock said. "Her phrasing on 'Tea Leaf Prophecy' is unbelievable." The New Yorker weighs in as well, speaking of Wayne Shorter's contributions: Hancock plays with care and beauty, his understated lyricism infusing the instrumental features "Sweet Bird," "Both Sides Now," and Duke Ellington's "Solitude," one of two non-Mitchell songs. But it is Shorter who truly inhabits Mitchellbs unique musical universe; relying on suggestion and shading, his compact soprano and tenor saxophone lines deliver the impact of ten notes with just one. Shorter gets to stretch out on his own composition, "Nefertiti," the spiralling number that, in its dC)but on Miles Davis's 1967 album of the same name, gave notice that the saxophonist was on the cusp of becoming a major jazz figure. Here, it acts as an homage to the artistic daring of three soul siblings: Joni, Wayne, and Herbie. "River: The Joni Letters" will be released September 25th at all the usual locations, and is available for pre-orders now from Amazon. - -- To unsubscribe from this list visit this link To update your preferences visit this link o?< ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Sep 2007 22:35:58 -0400 From: "Jim L'Hommedieu" Subject: News on www.jonimitchell.com Les put some news on www.jonimitchell.com today.
